  1. My system is quite weak-sauce, so I overclocked the snot out of everything. Luckily CPU overclocking is quite easy with Ryzen. GPU overclocking is also pretty easy. Now memory overclocking beyond the XMP profiles have eluded me. Tried it once and I nearly screwed everything up. Since I don't have great memory anyway and therefore won't be able to obtain a substantial overclock, I don't think it's worth my time to try any more for now.
  2. I think it's normal. I've tried MSFS on two different computers with different video cards and it always used the GPU at 100%, even in the menu. I'm not sure why the game does that. Common sense would suggest that it's not necesarry to ride the GPU that hard in the menu. I suppose Asobo has some optimising to do there. But truth be told, I think they've more important stuff to focus on at the moment...
  3. Maybe I'm missing something, but couldn't you simply change the key assigned to the brakes/parking brakes?
  4. Jep. I also find the lack of wakes a little annoying. If I could add another thing to Asobo's already long to-do list, I would add spashes on the windscreen when landing on water. Making a hard water landing in the A5 while having a crystal clear windscreen seems a little off. But this is a relatively tiny nit-pick...
  5. I don't think that's quite accurate, Steve. A GTX770 (minimum spec) is a bit faster than a 960 and quite a bit faster than a 1050ti. And the 970 is substantially more powerful than a 960. Check this out: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-960-vs-Nvidia-GTX-770/3165vs2174 https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1050-Ti-vs-Nvidia-GTX-770/3649vs2174 https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-960-vs-Nvidia-GTX-970/3165vs2577 It is confusing, but with Nvidia the 7, 9, 10, etc is the generation, and the 50(ti), 60, 70, etc is rank within the generation. So a bigger total number isn't necesarrily faster (although, sometimes it is). Hence, 770 > 1050ti. The 770 is an older card, but more powerful since it's higher in rank. Sorry for the treatise, but I've seen this misunderstanding crop up a few times on this forum. Anyway, it would seem to me that the 960 is actually slightly below minimum spec, based on my first link, above.
  6. I don't think there's a lot to comment on, in this case. You could report it if you'd like and include the screenshot. Have you retried to recreate the bug? I think that would be quite useful Asobo.
  7. I think you misunderstood me. What I meant was that the game seems to have less problems when installed in a different directory than the default installation directory, even if it's still on the same physical disk. Did you select the default installation directory? Otherwise, I'm out of ideas, unfortunately. I also built myself a new rig as a christmas gift to myself. I wanted to get a Ryzen 5600X and 3070, but I'm not making any scalper scumbag rich either. I barely got my hands on a Ryzen 3100 before even those got stupidly expensive and kept the 970 for now. Best I could do was ensure good case ventilation, buy a hilarously oversized cooler for the 3100 and overclocked everything.
  8. From what I've seen, upgrading to 32 GB may improve the 1% and 0.1% framerates, but the average will be much the same. So it may feel slightly less stuttery, I suppose. There's a few youtube videos out there that will give you an idea of what to expect. My gut feel is that your CPU will be good for almost any GPU. But take a look the on-screen dispaly, included in MSI afterburner, to see exactly what your computer is up to. If you notice that your CPU usage is kinda low in your current setup, then it probably has some capacity left to feed a more powerful GPU. Word of caution: Make sure to look at all individual cores, because one core may be at 100%, even though the overall usage is say 25%. In that case, the CPU may need an upgrade too. Ofcourse, this is all moot, because GPUs are as scarce as chicken teeth.
  9. That sucks, and I wish I could help. What happens when you press play? Nothing at all, or does it seem like it starts to load, then stops? Take a look at task manager when you launch the game. Is the CPU and RAM usage going up? Reason I ask is that on my system, it first seems to do nothing when I press play, but task manager shows the game loading in the background. Also, did you install it in the default directory? I've heard some people complain that the game misbehaves when installed elsewhere. Hope you get it sorted. I'd be curious to know your experience with a 970 when you get it going. I overclocked the snot out of mine to get the last bit of life out of it.
  10. That's legitimately cool. Thanks for the link. I haven't tried it yet, but if it works as advertised, I'd happily pay a few bucks for something like that.
  11. I don't do turboprops myself, so I don't have first hand knowledge. But I heard somewhere that the turbine logic in the sim is currently out to lunch. Perhaps others can share more info?
  12. I wonder if it's possible that we're misdiagnosing the symptom as the cause. What I mean is that, perhaps there is some code ineficciency causing the CPU to work very hard and therby dropping a lot of frames. The heavy CPU usage then leads to higher temperatures.
  13. I suppose it depends on your expectations. I think if you're ok with a reasonable (but not extraordinary) frame rate boost and most settings on high, then I think you'll be happy. On the other hand, if you were expecting 60 fps in New York, perhaps not. I'm reasonably happy with my system, also using a 970 (which I overclocked the snot out of). But I Fly GA in northern Canada and I'm happy with 30 fps. But these 970s are now hanging on by a thread. The newer cards are much more advanced...
  14. My opinion is that while it probably could run the sim, it likely won't do it very well. This is mainly because: * RAM: 8GB is a bit low. I use 16 GB, which the sim happily consumes. I've seen it go up 24 GB on Youtube benchmarks. * GPU and VRAM: Also a bit on the low side. I have a 970, with "3.5" GB of high speed VRAM and 0.5 GB of lower speed VRAM. The sim readily consumes all of it. In terms of horsepower, the 1060 is so-so. I think it's roughly on par with my 970, which handles the sim OK. But it's running at 100% all the time and is the bottleneck in my system. With a light aircraft, I get 40 FPS in the countryside and about 30 FPS in Toronto. This is with most setting between medium and high, but with 80% resolution scaling and a 2560x1080p resolution (which is ultrawide, so a few more pixels to push).
  15. Yup, mine too. I'm even spanking mine with an overclock thats just about stable.
  16. Correct. However, in my flightschool in the early 2000's we used flaps 10 on takeoff at the local airfield...so there is some precedent to use it.
  17. Forgot about this one: Switch to Developer mode (options, general, developer). Now, you'll see a menu bar appear the top of the screen. From there, you can go Windows, Aircraft Selector. Word of caution: I think that you won't get credit in your logbook when you use developer mode. I'm also pretty sure that achievements won't register. Lastly, I've heard that the sim just behaves a bit cooky in dev mode (clear as mud, I know, but this is what I heard).
  18. When starting on the runway, I believe that the sim pre-configures the aircraft for takeoff. In addition to the flaps, you'll also notice that the trim is in the takeoff position, mixture is leaned according to airport elevation and the appropriate lights are on. On the ramp, I guess you're expected to do everything yourself. I recall this being the behaviour of the sim since launch.
  19. Great topic! I think it depends on your aircarft type preference and type of flying. I do low-level VFR with GA aircraft and I found that I need the following at my fingertips: * Wheel brakes * Landing view toggle (I think that's what it is called - the view where you look over the nose) * Toggle external/cockpit view * Elevator and rudder trim * Smart cam quicklook (a recent discovery, usefull for quickly glancing at the threshold in the pattern) * Flaps extend/retract * Prop RMP increase/decrease * Mixture rich/lean I would also mention that I configured my hat switch to pan, instead of quick look. For me, this negates the need for the oft-reccomended x-box controller. Further, I've also set the panning speed to 100% and camera momentum to 0%. In conjuction with the smartcam quick look, I always know EXACTLY where I am in the pattern. Question: Does anyone know if it's possible to set a control to toggle to drone view? I've looked but couldn't find the option to set this control...
  20. Hmmm, interesting. Thanks for letting me know. Up until that point, the world was quite empty in the southern europe bush trip.
  21. Hi all, Quick question, has anyone noticed other players/aircraft on the bush trips? My understanding is that you’re alone in the world on the bush trips; no AI or human air traffic. However, on the European trip, I saw another plane symbol on the right hand screen of the G1000 of the 172. I couldn’t eyeball it though. Has anyone else come across this? Maybe it was a ghost or glitch or something...
  22. Thanks Neil. I’d just like the sim to register when I complete the bush trip, because I think getting the achievement would be cool (once I’ve done all of them). To not have sim recognize completion of the trip would be a little anti-climactic...
  23. Hi all, A peculiar thing has been happening to the last few legs of my bushtrip, and I'm wondering if someone else has seen this. I can complete a leg and continue with the next leg without a problem. But, it seems that some part of the sim isn't picking up on my progress. See the attached screenshot. In the screenshot abve, note how legs 9 and 10 have checkmarks in the status column (circled in green), but legs 11 and 12 (circled in orange) does not. Like I said previously, I've completed these legs and can even choose to continue with leg 13... This in inteself doesn't bother me too much, but I'd like to have the sim log that I completed the tip, once I've done so. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, and if you've completed the affected trip, did the sim log the completed trip? Thanks!
