  1. Or an addiction! My computer is in the shop and I am having BAD withdrawal symptoms! Four day weekend, perfect weather, FSX was running smoother than ever.... and the computer decided to puke it's guts out and fail to boot. Welcome Tex! And good luck with real life flying! If your experience goes anything like mine, it'll be a lot less frustrating than learning FSX's quirks. Just remember one thing during your training! If you start to see stuttering and bad FPS, just land and go home for the day! LoL
  2. I had the same problem, but missed some when I converted them to FSX. They had been added to my Addon Scenery directory instead of World/Scenery... So be aware you should look there also if you ever have more problems.
  3. I'm not really sure what happened, but either the Nvidia drivers screwed up after the latest Winblows update or the card puked it's guts out. A reset to original condition didn't work. The Geek squad will figure it out. I used to rebuild my own computers and learned how to do that JUST for flight sim, but I'm too old for that now. I just hope I can remember my passwords to get Steam and all my downloaded content back. I was really enjoying the Carenado 172n!
  4. Good news! It's not FSX-Se that's screwed up.. Bad news... It's the computer.. repairs this weekend. Grumble, grumble, grumble... I wanted to do some stress relieving flying.
  5. Done all of the above. Sorry about not being specific with computer specs. I panicked. I think I MIGHT have found the answer. I have a 4 day weekend so I'm going to try it all out and if I do have the answer, I'll report back here with what I did. Wish me luck, I need some aerial stress relief!
  6. "Flight Simulator was unable to load some program files and will now exit. Please reinstall Flight Simulator to restore or repair the program installation." Nothing new has been added. I removed the program and reinstalled it. Same message. Any ideas?
  7. Wait until you get the stutters while hand flying the 172 right at the flare in a crosswind! That makes for an ugly landing. I wish there was a fix for it, but my guess is that it's deciding if and where it needs to redraw the clouds and any other weather related scenery and then change the winds. that's only happened a couple of times, but I get the shakes a lot when I'm over flying a VOR or a checkpoint and trying to change heading and/or altitude.
  8. This will sound like a smart assed joke, but it affected my small single engine props (in the sim and in real life).. Maybe it'll affect a Citation too? Have you adjusted the crew/passenger load? If I put my actual weight in the pilot seat and no copilot, my planes will make circles to the left all day long or at least until I fill my coffee cup and return to the sim to correct it. Now I just put 200lbs in each front seat and throw 50 pounds of luggage, oil, wheel chocks, tow bars, outdated charts, stale candy bars, and other assorted junk in the rear cargo compartment. Makes for a well balanced cross country flight. If I could replicate the smell of my old 172 my simulator life would be perfect!
  9. FSX is a strange creature. I just can't figure out why that FS9 BGL canceled out ONLY that one flightplan and not the dozens of others. The planes in that plan were FS9 vintage, but so are most of the others. But, it's fixed now and I am happy!
  10. I didn't remember boat traffic in FS9 except for the FreeFlow stuff. I went ahead and pulled that bgl file out though, just in case it caused later problems. I use the Freeflow scenery to add the battleship and other Mobile landmarks. That's as much experimenting as I want to do. I've got it working smooth and the graphics are immersive enough for me to feel comfortable. From here on out, I'll just be adding some legacy carrier and military flightplans to have enough radio chatter and an occasional near miss. I've been repainting Dc9's and Martin 404's for Southern Airways and working on traffic plans for different years and paint schemes. That'll be my other goal when I'm not flying.
  11. We all know that you can't have FS9 traffic.bgl files mixed in with the FSX files or your AI won't show, or at least we should by now. I tried for three hours yesterday to get an AI flight to show and couldn't figure out why the planes never showed up. I used AIFP several times to search for FS9 traffic files in the usual scenery folder (where I keep my traffic files)... nothing. Went and took a nap when frustration became overwhelming and I was still recovering from a heart cath test and anesthesia yesterday morning.. no worries, I passed. Anyway, while laying there floating in and out, it occurred to me that I might have other traffic files in other places. Ran the search and I did! I had cargo ships in Mobile connected to the FS9 Freeflow Mobile scenery that I adapted for FSX! Apparently I didn't fully adapt them. Converted the cargo ship files to FSX and lo and behold, there's my whole flock of AI planes! The real question is why THAT Ai flightplan wouldn't show up but others I have built work just fine. My not so educated guess is that perhaps the successful plans took place at other times or other days of the week when the shipping traffic wasn't loaded, but I have no clue. Both the successful and previously non showing flightplans used converted FS9 aircraft, and the shipping traffic is from FreeFoow Florida and/or FreeFlow Mobile for FS9. The only thing I did with the FreeFlow stuff was remove the tree bgl's because they showed up EVERYWHERE and were larger than the buildings in downtown Mobile. I haven't checked to see if the shipping traffic is working properly yet. I ended up going to bed after I found my lost flight. I'm still prohibited from lifting stuff or cutting grass today, so I'll check on that in a bit. If it's messed up, I'll most likely just end up removing it. One or two cargo ships won't bother me at all if they aren't there.
  12. Sorry.. I should have said the Carenado 172.. I don't fly the default ones either, but I'm a fan of low and slow VFR so have no experience in the tubes.
  13. I've found that the 172 will track straighter on takeoff if I start off slowly and then increase the throttle. I turned torque and P factor down to half and should probably turn it down even more. Never had anything like that much weaving in a real plane.
  14. Wish it had helped. Mr Zippy will probably be by before too long. He'll have better suggestions.
  15. Right up front I'll say I have no skills and no experience with anything like this.. But after seeing similar questions in the forums for years I'll ask a few of the standard questions. Are you using DX-10 and Steve's DX fixer? Are aircraft shadows turned on? Are video drivers updated? Did you download the wrong version by mistake? And the classic (that surprisingly has worked for many of my problems)... Have you turned it off , then back on?
  16. I've gone back to basics. I loaded up the stock 172 and started in New Orleans, Flew to Lafayette, then to my home field of KBFM. Started there the next day and flew to Tallahassee. Left there the next day and flew to Savannah, Georgia. Today I took off from Savannah and landed in Ashville, NC. I always loved Ashville in mid-October. I'll take off from Ashville tomorrow or Tuesday and fly somewhere else. Maybe Bowling Green, where I got my Private license or to Springfield,TN where I worked to get it. from there I'll probably visit my first home field outside of Memphis, Wolf River Airport. After this trip is done, I may buy my first (virtual) plane. I'm thinking about the A2A 172 or the Carenado 172RG Cutlass. I know the A2A is more accurate, but after I spent $6000 rebuilding my Jeep, the wife may shoot me if I spend $50 on a computer airplane! And I got my Instrument rating in an RG and I think I may like to fly it out through Texas for a bit. Low, slow, VOR to VOR and observing the world pass below me like I used to do in real life.
  17. I just got back into simming a few months ago when I bought an HP Omen laptop. In hindsight, I should have gotten the faster processor, but it does well with FSx. I fly with plenty of scenery and traffic with FPS locked to 30 and Steve's DX10 fixer. Doesn't overheat at all. My longest session was about 3 hours though. I reached my destination, landed, and went to eat dinner. It runs Fs2004 with full graphics, tons of add-on scenery and no problems at all. I've also locked frames to 30 (I think), but can go much higher with it. My computer came with an Nvidia 1050. The bottleneck on it is the processor. I think it's a 2.8.. spend the cash and get the fastest you can buy, then the best video card you can fit in it. And Windows 10 isn't as big a pain in the ass as I thught it would be. Just turn off automatic updates and do it yourself when you decide you need it. For FSX, look for Kosta's tweak page. Works like a charm.
  18. I flew some cross country while waiting for the storm to come in. It shifted east so just few sprinkles this afternoon, maybe more tomorrow. I actually fired up FS2004 and flew it for a bit. I NEVER thought I would say this, but it runs too fast on my computer! Using the hat switch to turn my view causes an affect akin to Linda Blair's head spinning. All sliders maxed and averaging 65fps until I load in the Freeflow sceneries. I need to poke around here and find some cfg tweaks and such for it, mostly for shimmering and/or new sceneries and AI traffic for it. I feel bad. I left FS2004 like a ghost town when I got FSX running nicely.
  19. Woke up, went to work, Came home, ate dinner, mixed a nice rum punch (cause it's beach time except for the approaching storm), fired up the revamped flightsim computer. now I have another problem. the sim is running as smooth as silk, with locked FPS of 30, exceptionally nice graphics, and all of the scenery and traffic I need to see. what the heck am I supposed to do if I don't need to tweak the thing for an extra frame per second? just fly? no tweaking? well, I did. I just flew touch and goes and flittered between KBFM and KMOB a few times. My landings are as smooth as "butta". Guess I'll try some cross country this weekend while hoping we don't get flooded. maybe I'll look into Vatsim and online flying.. It'd be kind of interesting to actually talk to ATC again after so many years. can one still fly online with only the boxed version or is the Steam version required for that now?
  20. The computer is working now. The cause is irrelevant but can probably be blamed on pilot error. The discussion has now moved on to the popularity of rum in a coastal German town.
  21. I used to do all that. No desire to do it now. New computer, still under warranty, not even an email account on there so nothing to steal except FSX stuff. Less stress is what I’m after. But if ya lived in Mobile, I would have brought some rum and the computer and let ya tweak it out for me!
  22. Turns out they didn’t have to wipe the disk and reload everything. So far, I have everything I’ve checked and FSX runs perfectly! It was just a Windows glitch. Some computers have them and some don’t. It all depends on what’s on them and how they’re set up.
  23. The Geek Squad called me today. My computer is ready and can be picked up at 10am! The funny thing is that I actually learned how to rebuild desktop systems JUST so I could fly Microsoft Flight Sims! That was a long time ago though and I seem to have lost those skills after not doing it for 15 years or so. This is also a laptop, and I'm not even thinking abut opening it up. Yup, I'm at the point in my life (ie- old fart) where I can say, "Screw it! I'll just pay somebody to fix it for me and avoid the frustration."... sadly, not yet at that point with the yard work.
  24. I usually do the updates, but I do em when I decide to do em and usually a month or two after they've come out. I thought I had automatic update turned off though. Don't know how I turned it on. It'll be okay. I have to redownload Steve's Fixer, the weather program I used, some WOA routes, and I have to figure out which paint program I finally got to work so I can flip the tail logo around correctly on my Southern Airways Dc-9's. I'm going to look at it as an opportunity to make it even better. Hell! Half the fun is experimenting anyway!
  25. I FINALLY had FSX running as smooth as silk with DX-10 and Steve's fixer, a miriad of other tweeks and adjustments. I didn't remember to turn off automatic Windows updates and the computer updated on me.. then went into an endless startup/repair loop. It's now sitting on a workbench in BestBuy waiting to have Windows reloaded and essentially become a new computer. Didn't have all of my ai traffic files saved to disk, didn't have all of my paint additions and CFG tweaks saved to disk. This is what happens when you think, "Hey! It's a new computer! No need to save all that stuff yet. It won't go bluescreen on me!" Complacency in airplanes will kill you, even in simulated airplanes!
