Earlier today I reread some of the threads when MS went from FS9 to FSX.
We almost could copy and paste the discussion between then and now.
What I found most interesting was that on a whole those threads came to the same conclusions, 1) we all have our preference and will defend our selection, and 2) as long as we are having fun there is a pace in the sim world for all of us and our preferred sim.
That’s right.
and no need to drag users of other sims thru the mud either. (Not you, but some who have)

For some reason i find landings much easier from the 2D panel than the VC, and when flying airborne Trailways there's nothing to see anyway (let the AP take it, go to external view and scan around). But there are some aircraft, and most helicopters, that just don't feel "right" without a VC.
I’m used to it I guess.
Going back to FSX, after awhile if an add on had no VC, I’d pass on it.
again that’s just me.

Personally, I don’t miss the 2D cockpits.
when I’m driving my car, I look around and see everything. The 3D panels simulate this, not a gauge cluster in my face.
Just my personal opinion.

The amount of freezing posts increased on the PMDG forums as soon as the tablet was released. I have not updated my PMDG aircraft so I do not have the tablet. I have not experienced the freeze in well over a year. I have only had the one freeze. I still use Simbrief and Navagraph.
It was freezing for me using the FBW A320 as well.

As what we had in FSX, a 2d cockpit, able to fly with full front view without cockpit blocking and important flight details such as speed, direction, and height displayed on top of the screen, With these options not abled in FS2020 I simply cannot fly an aircraft. Flying a real aircraft in real world is different to fly in computer with the mouse and keyboard it takes a long time to see around. In real flight we have a wider field of vision and we can quickly move our neck to see or simply moving the eyes. We cannot do that in computer. before we use the mouse to change the view plane would have crashed, (unless we pause the flight and doing that the thrill is over).
The FS2020 team must quickly bring an update to enable these defficiencies. I have now shelved my FS2020 and gone back to FSX.
Have you tried using VR?

Still having this issue, I searched and searched online yet again, and one thing suggested was turning off online AI. I switched to offline AI and was able to complete a flight finally. Also, it was suggested to try a different flight plan on Simbrief than the one they give first. (most common or something like that). I'll try that next.
But after one session, the online AI seemed to be the culprit. For now, of course. More testing is needed, but for now, it's given me something to try other than reinstallation....

I watched videos and grabbed some tidbits about what to enter, such as cost index etc. 1.0 was suggested for C.I. so I always put that. I'm not into the fltsim program so can't be too specific ATM. But after watching a few videos (along with help from guys like Tim) I learned a lot. And practice makes perfect. Well not PERFECT perfect, but maybe as good as it gets.
I mean, default flight planning isn’t bad, but for those that want “as real as it gets”, Simbrief and Navigraph were both highly recommended to me when I first bought MSFS.
I see both points.

I'm with Tim on this. I pulled out many of the few hairs I had left fiddling with Simbrief. With a little practice and patience, the default does what I need.
So what do you input as for example, the cost index? Just a random number? Performance? Etc?
Just curious; that's why I use Simbrief. They select all that.

Ah! of course - I gave up on the airliners back in FSX (after 9-10 years of flying nothing else) so I forgot about all that FMC stuff!
I have the PMDG. You need to input fuel, weights, winds, waypoints, approaches, altitudes, etc.
By using Simbrief, it's all pre-determined and it'll input the info for me.

I've given up with Simbrief. It only works properly if you also have a Navigraph subscription, which I don't have. If you take the time to learn how to flight plan using the default World Map features, it does everything that Simbrief does anyway.
Simbrief makes it easier to program the FMC....lol....just "plug and play". No 15-20 minutes of programming each waypoint, weights, fuel, etc.

Hi, davidc2 and kingnorris!
I know this has been quiet for a while, but in case anyone searches for "MSFS 2020 freezes with sound; no crash or error warnings" I had this start with PMDG 739 and Pilot2ATC on all westbound routes that included the fix ZIMMZ. Deleting that waypoint allows a full flight, no freezes. I have default scenery except some add-on KLGA and KEWR.
No clue as to root cause, but just reporting what I found. Will update if it recurs.
Thanks
Joe
Although I don’t have Pilot2atc, I’m beginning to think the waypoint issue is the culprit. I’ve done two flights now using default MSFS flight planning and no freezes.
using just simbrief I got freezes at almost the exact same location every time.

So….
using just the default MSFS flight plan, selecting the origin, destination, cruise alt etc and NOT Simbrief AT ALL, I finally completed a flight with zero freeze.
Coincidence???

Does it like a charm, and has done so since 2020. I run LittleNavMap on one side of the main screen and Navigraph on the screen on the other side.
There is a port for a fourth screen, but that may be pushing my luck.
This pausing in flight and freezing is recent, albeit infrequent, and I sometimes wonder if it may be the FBW A320, which I have only recently started to fly.
It's not just the FBW, at least not in my case. Happens with my PMDG 737 as well.

Have you considered a hardware or cooling issue? Maybe not enough PSU for the video card? Improperly configured components? Failing drives or memory? Since this is not a common issue, I would go beyond assuming it's a software issue.
Never was an issue since I bought MSFS and my new gaming PC. (Specs in sig) Only recently has this been happening.

It’s even worse now. Every flight. Every. Single. One! I get the freeze. Deleting cache no longer works. Only solution is restarting the flight after using task manager to shut down MSFS. But if I wait one day, I get the freeze yet again.
I just don’t get it. No errors or anything. Internet is strong. Video card drivers up to date. Not ready to ditch the sim yet but then again, if I can’t use it….

I think one of the benchmarks in FlightSim is ATC that tries as hard as possible to mess you up or get you into trouble. They won't give you the Runway you want, put you on an Approach with the wind instead of into it...
“You are 45 miles south. Descend and maintain 3000 feet…”
while I’m currently at 32,000 feet.
talk about a rapid ear exploding descent… lol

Since flying the newly acquired PMDG 737, I don't even use the ATC anymore; just listen as they talk to other aircraft. (So it's not so quiet lol) but it's always been a bit off as far as giving me directions, so it isn't missed.

AA has one airplane painted in this scheme. Since AA and US Airways merged AA is showing a livery to represent that merger. I have seen this plane at KDFW. They also have a Piedmont livery. At least they did a few years ago. This is just my opinion but I do not like the new AA livery. When I think of AA I still see the silver bird with the large blue and red AA on the tail with a blue eagle. The new livery looks too much like a Greyhound bus to me. Check out this link to see more. https://simpleflying.com/american-special-liveries/
Me too. Their all chromed livery was sick in my opinion!

So here's an update: After clearing my cache (Thanks Tiger!), I managed to do the entire flight with no freeze ups. To JSkorna---overheating didn't seem to be an issue. But I appreciate your input!

Recently bought the PMDG 737-600 for $35 bucks.

If this is happening with a default aircraft and default scenery, try deleting your rolling cache file in: AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache
Then re-launch the sim, which will create a new local cache file automatically.
That’ll be my last resort.
thanks. If that fails, guess I’m $crewed.

No add on scenery. All default.
Even with no flight plan filed, if I just take off and fly a bit, it freezes up shortly after reaching cruise or close to it.
Last thing I’m gonna try is reverting my drivers. I just don’t know how far back I should go with those.

So this started Dec 19, after I purchased PMDG's 737-600. I can take off, fly, and get to cruise altitude, but soon after, the sim freezes with the sound still going. I mean a complete freeze, meaning absolutely nothing works. I tried waiting it out to see if it would resume at some point, but after almost 30 minutes, it did not. I have to Ctrl Alt Delete and close the sim via the task manager. Which of course means, going back in I get the "MSFS did not close properly" and I have to choose "Start in normal mode".
No crash to desktop with an error warning, nothing. It's like the sim paused itself.
Thinking it was the newest aircraft, I uninstalled it and flew the same route with the FBW A320, and the same thing happened, nearly the same area as well.
I updated my drivers to the newest ones (Dec 12) to no avail. I lowered my graphics, nothing. All this happened after the latest update, which I thought was scenery only.
Google was no help. Anybody else have this issue? Again, it's not a freeze on the loading screen, not a freeze on the "fly now", etc. It's during a relatively short flight (Around an hour and a half), shortly after reaching cruise alt.

I don't update anymore. Seems every time I do, MSFS crashes.
FS2020 of no use to me

That’s fine, my lips are sealed. Lol.
as was stated, whatever makes a flight sim user happy is all that matters.
I got a buddy of mine who
only swears by X Plane. He won’t ever touch Microsoft ever.
that’s all good.
