The Daily Update

(Cue The Cult’s, “She Sells Sanctuary”)

Elias Pacheco: “Now for our Daily Update for 08 January. Here is our Spotters’ Guide:

GAAGSG.thumb.jpg.f53b137fe6acebad019be2c56eb7f315.jpg

The field is really coming together now, as is our Guide. PhrogPhlyer has indicated that he will be switching from his helicopter to a vintage warjet in Sydney for a Free-Flown run up the coast. If anyone else is intending to switch aircraft at the end of the 1976 route and has already procured their other plane, feel free to post its information and we will get it into the Guide post-haste. To all others who wish to correct or complete their Guide entries, let me remind you that there are only two more days on which the Guide will be updated on a daily basis.

On a related note, some people have indicated that other commitments will prohibit them from joining us for the entire Rally. To them, and to anyone else listening who might be interested in Club Chachapoya and feels like checking us out, you are most welcome to Free Fly with us for at least part of the race if you happen to be in Australia while it’s being run. Should you wish to appear in the Spotters’ Guide as well, please post your data and we will get you on the board as soon as possible.

So, where is everybody this morning and what have they been up to? Taoftedal is proving to be our sponsor-whisperer, as he has procured Piper’s patronage for all of those who are flying their brand – which includes Radio Chachapoya. He has also finagled free fuel from Shell for all flyers. I am certain that I speak for the wallets of everyone here in saying Thanks!

Scottish Mike and defaid have been practicing and getting to know the route. MAD1 had found that his GPS software is missing two of the airports on the 1976 route plan, but has discovered a workaround.

jgf and that magnificent-looking Staggerwing he’s flying are in Kaltag, Alaska. Next stop: Russia.

I had mistakenly reported that Melo965 had already arrived in Perth. He has not; at last report, he is on Midway Island and is planning to head to Darwin next.

After a scare due to sloppy air traffic control, Bossspecops is currently en route to Sri Lanka – some of a certain age may remember it as Ceylon.

And, after a 15-hour marathon and a fuel stop in Jakarta, your humble correspondent arrived at Jandakot yesterday evening!

And on that note, this concludes our Daily Update. Be careful out there; the nuns are back and they’re packing heat. Have a wonderful flying day! Bye, bye.”

I decided to re-install scenery I had for YPJT Jandakot. It is very nice scenery and the only reason I had removed it is it causes random building crashes. But if you remember to switch off detect crashes in the realism settings and back on after take off it's worth having.

So many situations like this, plus suicidal AI who will collide with you and continue flying while you go down in flames, led me to leave crash detection disabled.

And look out for those flying Emergency Door Plugs! Never know when one of those will just hit you out of the blue and really ruin your day!

Wow ... impressive ... I feel a whole lot better now.  Thought for a minute we may have to rely on those chopper's for the 'unpaved' sorties.  Sure hope all those strips are long enough.  🙂

Thanks Airbasil!

I don't think anyone's made a dedicated Med Jet for FlightSim yet, correct? I know there's a PC-12 and King Airs with Medical configs out there for Nine...

I know a chap who has one of those in his back yard. I bet he's really glad he went out for a drink when his wife thought he was mowing the lawn.

Actually most of the big Airports in the world nowadays complain about business Aviation... they all want to get rid of Business and Private Aviation... so they just say:

"hey sorry, but we need your Parking Spot for our Airliners to park at... so you have to go and leave"... (its all about bureaucracy and politics nowadays..😜)

Well yah... but where? is there any other Airport that has the capacity for our Citation and that eventually even has a Hangar to put her as long as she's not needed?
Luckily Jandakot said: we've got some space for you... but the fees will be more costly than at Perth... so yah... its me to decide wether i want to go there or not...

Finally I said: at least they have Jet A1 so let's head there and see what they can do for us... 😄

If it needs to be a water bomber, I'd recommend a CL-415 in this case or a Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina... with her, you'll be capable to roll at least 🤣
Welcome to the club!

Need some Beaching Gear on that 314 there, JSMR😋

Of course, you could try the XB-15... same Engines and Wing from the 314, and it has Wheels, too! 🤣

Very, very glad that you're able to join us on our little shindig!

I may need somebody to paint me an RFDS Livery on the Citation CJ1+ / or if needed on the Veneaviones Cessna 550 Citation II (Even if that 'll be totaly fictional - but it may fit better to the Chacapoya's GAAG...)

Question re those doing ferry flights to get to Perth

I am using Little NavMap for navigation.  Unfortunately it does not link autopilot to the flight plan like Kit's FSTramp.  But what I do first is configure the fuel and payload for the flight.  Pretty important because my current ferry flight was 3,884 miles.

Then I take off, sometimes with a notch of flaps, and climb to a reasonable cruise altitude on the right heading.  Then I engage autopilot with altitude hold, and if it is fairly stable in cruise  just check about every hour or so to make sure the aircaft is maintaining the proper heading.  Yesterday through Today's ferry flight was 3,884 miles.

I started the flight about 4:30 PM local time and checked it periodically through the evening.  At bedtime did the calculation and it was due to land at about 3:30 AM, so paused the flight until morning.  As it turned out I was up for a few minutes at 3:30 AM and the aircraft was stable on course, so I unpaused and went back to sleep, relying on George to fly the plane.  When I got up around 7 AM the aircraft was still on course just fine.  Eventual landing in Australia at 12:15 PM my local time.  Total flight time was 15 hours and 17 minutes.

PAD made a Challenger 604 air ambulance - the file name was cl604am9.zip .  I can find some repaints for it, but Search doesn't turn up the original file.  Perhaps someone has it tucked away on a hard disk somewhere (I don't)?

How do you guys do it in your sim, you don't sit there for all that time e.g. hours, to do the flight do you? Do you turn autopilot on? Do you do time acceleration or make jumps forward in your flight plan?

I hand-climb to cruising altitude, set the AP, and let Otto do the work (or if he deflates, I fly the plane myself...).  I do not use time acceleration.  Once the Gaggle is done, if the winds are right, I have just enough range to make it from the tip of Japan to the Aleutians, so I will continue eastward toward Lock Haven, PA, to complete a circumnavigation.

My USAF pals did a great job ferrying my Chipmunk to Australia from Midway Island.

DawntakeofffromMidway.thumb.jpg.5ae9dd3bec2ed20a29d66a7420cced89.jpg

Dawn takeoff from Midway with the Chipmunk on board.  Yes, we did clear those trees, the notch of flaps helped.

Used7offuel.thumb.jpg.b92321cf1102787c36042b0bfac761f9.jpg

Used 7% of our fuel getting to a cruise altitude of 30,000 ft.

Australiainsight.thumb.jpg.14843415a9b739d191c9b62f7e9b5679.jpg
Australia in sight.  13% fuel remaining.  Used much leaner engine settings on this ferry flight compared to the flight to Midway.

Sunissetting.thumb.jpg.1c13c250ea6c51e13223ff1397b160b9.jpg

Sun is setting!  Good thing we took off from Midway at dawn.

Autopilotoff-runwayahead.thumb.jpg.2097f26252cb3f6dee066f0c18499a97.jpg
Autopilot off.  Runway at Darwin in sight ahead.

Abouttotouchdown.thumb.jpg.078b2383c09ae6d8229f572d855192b5.jpg
About to touch down.  Much better landing than the one at Midway.  Plenty of runway in front of us when we stopped rolling and turned for the taxiway.

PacificaAirlines.thumb.jpg.0a0354618175fadb6d18637cf503e9fa.jpg
That Pacifica Airlines plane is not used to seeing a military transport parked next to it.

My Air Force friends unloaded the Chipmunk for me.  Going to rest until tomorrow after flying 4,471 miles.  Was very happy with the engine settings.  Had 9% fuel left on landing instead of the 1% at Midway.  Took more time though, 15 hours and 17 minutes.

Still 1,763 miles to go to get to the start of the race.  My plan is to fly this route in the Chippie:

YPDN - YPKU - YCIN - YPPD - YPLM - YGEL - YPEA - YPJT.

It will give me a chance to do some timing and calibration flights.  It is also very important for me to stop in at RAAF Base Pearce (YPEA) before arriving at YPJT for the race.
