The 2024 Australia Rally...

I think we are all learning from these flights.  I'm navigating better, managing engines better, Airbasil induced me to drag my Citation X out of mothballs and learn to fly it, I'm even flying those airborn sardine cans now (just created a wide screen photo panel for the Tinmouse 737, previously aliased to the default, and have put several thousand miles on it).  (And I'm ignoring my race sims.)

Also, this new-fangled prop: constant speed and I presume variable pitch, and that new slider control 'Prop' (my old yoke automatically has the 2nd lever configured to move it). Unsure where I should set that for max speed and efficiency, presume fully pushed in.

Prop operation varies with aircraft, try to find a checklist for yours, it will help.  Some aircraft have very specific rpm/mp settings for best speed, most economical cruise, altitude, etc.;  on the other hand, the A35 I flew in our last outing was simple, "2300 rpm for takeoff, max 5 minutes, 2050 rpm for everything else".  As it was explained to me, consider the prop like the transmission in your car, high rpm is also the highest blade pitch so is like low gear, at cruise you go to a lower rpm/lower blade pitch.  But FS is not a stickler for proper operation;  except for a few aircraft with custom gauges that model correct operation (and penalize incorrect) you can fly however you like, though fuel consumption is affected by rpm/mp.  On approach and finals you typically put the prop back in high pitch position so in case of a go around you're ready to apply power.    With a well modeled airplane you can often adjust cruise rpm by listening to the sound;  at altitude lower the mp to cruise setting then lower the prop rpm slowly, when the sound changes from a "roar" to a smoother, quieter tone, that's usually a good cruise speed.

VP2 I have the Abacus DA42, cheap and still available (I think), but your question sent me back looking at what else I had and the AI DA42 by Richard Faith (it is fully flyable) looks better than the Abacus pay-ware (you don't get opening canopy) but flaps gear etc. are all nicely modelled.

Abacus offering (payware):

The Daily Update

(Cue The Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary...)

Elias Pacheco: "Hello and welcome to the first of our Daily Updates, here at Radio Chachapoya.  Here is the Spotters' Guide, as it stands so far:

GAAGSG.thumb.jpg.f3a0d6ee677b0bab0afd071bc05ec3c0.jpg

"The information is beginning to fill in nicely.  The organizers have asked me to remind all participants that there still remains 5 days to get your data and pictures into the Spotters' Guide.

"Some of the participants are flying to the rallying point in Perth:

  • Mr. Michael Coldsmith Briggs III, Team Chachapoya's sponsor, has provided his team with a C-17 to transport their Bell 222A to Perth.  ViperPilot2 has graced the group with some Japanese poetry to celebrate the event.  We hope to hear more of it as the Great Australian Air Gaggle continues.
  • After flying from Bremerton, Washington to Williams Lake in Canada, in his Chipmunk, Melo965 has prevailed on some friends from the US Air Force to transport him the rest of the way in a C-133.
  • defaid took a C-130 from Toronto to Cardiff to pick up a lightly-used Piper Arrow IV, then on to Perth.  He arrived on Monday.
  • Some of our... less sane... participants are actually flying their race planes to Perth.  After an odd bout of aeronautical nudity, Bossspecops has reached Cyprus in his Short Sealand.
  • jgf has flown his Staggerwing from Cleveland to Leavenworth, Kansas, on the first leg of his journey.  Keep a low profile, jgf; I hear the authorities may be looking for you.
  • Your humble correspondent is now making his way from Dubai to India in his Piper Saratoga prototype.
  • And this just in: AirBasil_1, though not participating in the race, has arrived in Perth in a Cessna Citation CJ1+ to offer support to the racers.  Well done, AirBasil_1!

"This concludes the first of our Daily Updates.  If I have missed any of those who have made getting to the start of the Challenge a Challenge in and of itself, I do apologize.  This is Elias Pacheco for Radio Chachapoya, signing off until tomorrow."

The numbers and variety of aircraft (et al.) available to us has always amazed me and I am in aah and debt to all whom have ever taken on a development project.

I often tweak and fiddle with the files a bit (sometimes more) in attempt to meet the numbers but my skill sets are limited.  I mentioned earlier that the Twin Comanche was one of them but that is not correct (perhaps a few minor tweaks) and my apologies to Don and his team (poor memory on my part).

I have several AI (flyable) machines (Henry Tomkiewicz and Dee Waldron’s name come to mind) and have always enjoyed them.  Not the bells and whistles that we all like but they look great to me and somehow help expand the imagination.

Sometimes … less is more.

I've never been caught up in the "ultra-realistic" treadmill.  Many of the aircraft I fly have no VC (use the skipview gauge and never have to see that disembodied view), have no opening doors, even have 3D models dating back to FS2002 (every Lake Renegade out there is built on Woodward's old model, which must be at least twenty years old).  But all are fun.

The Staggerwing I'm using for this flight was FS2002 payware, updated to FS2004 physics and released as freeware.

What a lot of work to not just lead this event but also to post a Spotters Guide!  Thanks so much!!

However, after studying the route and especially not finding YCAG in my world as simmed in P3D, I'd like my entry to be Free Fly.  I'll try to make all the route and throw in comments etc., but trying to do timed with different software seems unlikely to have success.

BTW:  I already asked Phrog, but does anyone know the frequency and call id or Lat-Long of the CAG VOR?  That way I can at least view the area near where CAG is in your software.

Michael,

In FS9 The Lat/Long for CAG is S32° 15' 50.58"/E125° 29' 48.57"

VOR Frequency 112.5 MHz.

In SkyVector Lat/Long for YCAG is S32° 17.02'/E125° 28.47"

Closest NAVAID is the FORREST NDB @ Frequency 268.

You could add one of the YCAG airstrips that a couple of folks here made to use in FSX just for the Rally, and drop it into your P3D Install.

Please let us know if you find any other discrepancies.

I guess I slept through the entire Flight, but now I find myself in Perth thanks to Airbasil! I didn't know he was part of the Flight Crew! All I remember was Takeoff from KBKF late last night, and now I'm Down Under; way Down Under! Okay then...

touchdown here in Perth

now time to find some breakfast

and a cup of joe

perhaps a Sausage roll or

other Aussie breakfast treats

SM... Thanks for the heads up on the DA42. Never played around with a flyable AI airplane before... anything special I need to do, or just drop it in the Sim?

OK, I just found the CAG VOR.  P3D shows it pretty well and there's a group of buildings nearby which look to be hangers,  So I'm assuming that's YCAG.  I took a couple of screenies but now seem unable to insert them.  I'll try again later.

Having said that, I still didn't find the frequency of CAG VOR.  If anyone knows it. I'd appreciate hearing from them.

Currently the crew of 'Austral Rose' are enjoying the wonders of Berenice Int. Airport in the far south east corner of Egypt, such as they are.

FSX's version of the airport, HE14, is totally bare, not a single building or taxiway marker anywhere, and as far as I can see, even with so called Egypt VFR scenery, there's nothing else for MILES! 😯

En route here, by pure coincidence, I passed almost directly o'head the place where I lived when I was 3-5 yrs old, which was in Heliopolis Egypt, much amazement on board of course.

Anyway, Berenice is somewhere to land and refuel (virtually) and tomorrow we're off to Dharan, right across Saudi Arabia from one side to the other. I'm looking forward to some gripping scenery.......................not!

Ferry-e.jpg.1d9b09aa0a7808a110676f8cdf1779f8.jpg

O'head my old place of abode from 1945-47.

Downtown Berenice.............yeah, right.

TomPD, thanks for entering the info into the Spotters' Guide.

Only a few changes:

Pilots/Crew: Mike (No John Johnson or Suzanne (for now) ;-)).

Sponsors: TBD

Year: 1977

Model No.: M-20J

Mods: Lycoming I0-360 engine

Intended route: Combined (timed 76 Race + untimed Basil route)

Aircraft no: 245 for 76 race

I am replicating the aircraft below (the number is a bit of a guess) but with the livery as entered in the Spotters guide.

MooneyM20EChaparral.jpg.7736fef9da47883031d286312526276a.jpg

Will above + details you have already entered suffice as my official entry?

Thanks for taking on this admin task. Rather you than me.

Is it OK to change passengers as the race goes on? PIC (Pilot In Command) will stay the same I think.

VP2

re AI aircraft. I can't remember if I converted it, but I don't think so.

Just install it like any other aircraft. It may not have a panel or sound file (not needed for AI) and the .air file might need the type changing. If you have problems just let me know and I will forward the files required to make it flyable and show up in your aircraft listing.

Just before I turn in, could I have no. 303 please for the '76?

Had lots of fun trying to squeeze it in between registration, decal and louvre panel overlays on Carenado's single-sided (!) rear fuselage texture. I didn't use the B&H circle; adding it would have made everything else too small and I'm too lazy to cut it up between 3 different parts of the texture file. If anyone else is doing one, PP's number font on page 2 was Bahnschrift SemiLight Condensed.

Sweet dreams!

303.thumb.jpg.733302395837a4199fe0a76f2d2524f1.jpg

A bit grubby but I had to peel it off a couple of times.
