At my wits end! - FSX-SE keeps crashing!

Recommended Posts

Hi there everyone,

My FSX Game was working perfectly a few months ago, and before Christmas 2022, without any hitches. But now, FSX seems to be crashing randomly after changing/switching through menus, and AI Traffic bounce up and down along each airport's apron, and do twirls in the air. I don't have any clue what has happened, or what has changed. After a few minutes of switching between menus, and viewing nearby airports.

The FSX Application crashes to Desktop, and Event Viewer gives the faulting module as NTDLL.DLL. I have tried reinstalling FSX Steam Edition via Steam, using UIAutomationcore (386 Version), purging and resetting my FSX Microsoft Roaming Folder and Cache, and I've even reinstalled Windows 10, to no avail. The problems still persist. Also, when I view certain AI Aircraft that are already in the air, and are enroute to their destinations, in the simulation/game, I often find them not too far from each other, and they are rotating on their X axis, and sometimes fly inverted. And then the just drop out of the sky, and disappear altogether.

Also when I try and take off, no matter which aircraft it is, eg a FAIB 737, 747 or 757, or even an DJC/FSPXAI airbus A319, A320 or A321, any aircraft at all, the right or left engine, only always one of them, is never on, and I have to keep pressing the engine on hotkey, but even still, with both engines at maximum, the different aircrafts only can reach about/between 65-85 knots, and the nose of the aircraft just is raised in the air. I have even tried crashing in water, to see what would happen, it respawns in the air above the water, at it's top speed, but then quickly slows down and stalls and then falls back to the ground/water.

I have checked all of the aircraft.cfg and .air files, for all of the aircraft, land vehicles and rotorcraft. They all seem fine, however I noticed when opening up the "Fuel and Payload Settings", via the FSX Simulation Home/Selection Screen, that most of the weight is shunted to the front-middle side of the plane, and it says that the aircraft weight is some ridiculous figure like "127,625lbs over its maximum take off weight", even though I never changed any of those settings on any of the default or AI Traffic Aircraft. I do have images of the bizarre activity, but I cannot seem to find a way to upload them to this support thread. Any help or advice on my issues experienced, would be enormously appreciated.

I thought I had it narrowed down completely, but It turned out, that the issue isn't to do with any of the UK2000 scenery files,

On a second note, FSX-SE also now seems to be CTD after around 15-20 minutes a time, the game will start off smoothly, but then it will lag and then pause, and then it will CTD abruptly...

I have copied my FSX Error report for you all to see, but as you can probably figure, it isn't much help, at least to me! --

From within your error reports, especially the Windows Event Viewer, comes this:

Exception code: 0xc0000005

This is a memory exception error, meaning that "something" attempted to write to an area of RAM where it had no access rights.

Note: this has nothing to do with the 4 GB VAS that FSX operates in, this is a direct RAM write attempt gone wrong.

There is nothing to show directly what this "something" is, but since ai_player.dll is mentioned as the faulting module name, it could be something related to AI or an AI add-on.

In all the cases of this exception code I have seen, both here and on prepar3d.com, this has proven to be caused by an add-on of some sorts.

Hi again everyone,

I've tried to verify the integrity of my Steam and FSX files, to no avail/improvement. I have also come across this other 'Windows Event Viewer' error log, while searching through them today:

Hi again everyone,

I may have found the problem, but I need a second opinion. I have downloaded as part of my original FSX Installation, copies of aircraft files from my old computer, that was transferred off my old hard drive, and onto my new PC, which is the same model and operating system: (Dell XPS 8500/Win 10). However, I noticed something slightly odd in a few of the aircraft config files, I noticed that there in these files they are relating to the ‘AIM Embraer - E135, E145 & E145XR’, however, instead of using the proper aircraft, ATC designator, they all say either: ‘ERJ 135’, or ‘ERJ 145’. It’s my understanding is that even in real life terms, that ATC aircraft designators, should only be either 23 or four characters long? However, these ones here, or six characters long, with a space in between each ‘three sets of characters’, eg: ‘ERJ XXX’ etc. could this be the issue we are looking for? As this could possibly explain the - AI/Player.dll error? But I thought that FSX, only accesses aircraft files, if they have been loaded all selected from the main menu or during flight, but, it seems to be happening whether those aircraft have been selected or not? Or does FSX constantly access them during a program, loading and in operation?

Kind regards,

From Edward Powell

An incorrect ATC designator cannot possibly cause a CTD - what this indicates is a corrupted livery or a corrupted livery and model.

I would recommend removing all your AI ERJ aircraft and re-downloading them from scratch.

If it's not the ERJ's, it's another AI aircraft's livery/model issue - step and repeat as above.

I must say that I have not seen the AIM ERJs or their liveries cause errors like this (I have all 3 of them), but I cannot rule out that they could be the cause..

I believe (but my opinion only) that the error more likely comes from a flyable aircraft or a scenery add-on.

Edward, could you post just general list of what add-ons you have?

Hi there @jorgen.s.andersen and @tiger1962

I previously had both all the: UK2000 Xtreme and UK2000 HD - FSX Scenery installed, plus UT2, but all have been removed and not reintroduced to my current FSX-SE Game, due to my old Dell XPS 8500 machine no longer working, partly due to it being over 5-6 years old. And I hadn’t as of yet got round to it being retransferred onto my new Dell XPS 8500 machine/tower unit. I am also using the .386 version of UIAutomationCore.dll which currently makes no ascertainable difference to the problems or CTD’s encountered.

Also for reference, please find below, a summary of my Dell XPS 8500 specs:

Dell XPS 8500

Windows 10 Professional

16 GB RAM

2 x 2TB HDD’s

Nvidia 710 Graphics

I had to do a data recovery process, on my old PC hard drive (My first/previous Dell XPS 8500), and some of the data was wiped, however this is unlikely to be the case of a corrupted livery, in this case, which had been transferred over I believe, as I previously removed all of my addon (Non-Default) FSX aircraft, and it’s still came up with the same CTD issue.

If the sim still CTD's with no addon's whatsoever (aircraft or scenery), in totally default state, then this is a memory access fault as Jorgen said a few posts up. You could have a hardware fault such as a failing memory module, PSU or hard drive - but this shouldn't be the case on a new PC. I would definitely go with a corrupted add-on of some kind - aircraft/livery/scenery/landclass/mesh.

The memory exception occurs when a piece of running software - be it Windows or an application - tries to write to an area of RAM where it has no access rights. I would think that rules out hardware errors, and I think we can rule out Windows also as the culprit. So then that leaves applications - of any kind, FSX and others.

Under "others" falls whatever is running in the background. To see what there is, hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and select Task Manager, then the Startup tab, where you will see what starts at system boot time. Use your own judgment to see what should be disabled there, only meaning it does not start when the computer boots. Some applications leave stuff running after you close them, but if you do a boot-up before running FSX, then you know there will be a minimal number of things running in the background.

In FSX I also think we can rule out the default aircraft - I don't think I've ever seen error reports about them. Of the add-on aircraft that Edward mentions above, I have, or have had, all of them, both in FSX and P3D with no problems. I don't think a damaged model or livery could cause the exception error (usually the aircraft doesn't show at all or is black all over), but I cannot rule that out either.

So that leaves "other" kinds of add-on that you either have now or had at one time - because some that you used to have might have left "stuff" behind when they were uninstalled. What do you have, or used to have, that could fall in this category?

Sorry for the long rant - but don't worry, it gets longer!

System care: is Windows updated fully? Run Windows Update, but do this: under Update, in Advanced options, is the little switch "Receive updates for other Microsoft products" set to On? If it is not, switch it to On and run Update. Leave the switch in the On position. This will ensure that your C++ and .NET Framework is up to date, which is very important. Do not worry about DirectX, that is updated when Windows updates, and FSX does not care about DX 12 either, it wants DX 9c or 10. BTW, if you have DX 10 Preview turned on, try to turn it off and see if that helps.

As for other system troubles, I don't think you have them, or you would see other exception codes galore.

So, in the above, you see a lot of assumptions, "I believe" and "I think or don't" - because there are so many possibilities for this error. A list of your "other" add-ons, past and/or present, may certainly help us narrow this down.

Let us know how this goes -

Jorgen

They also also be another explanation, after my new PC arrived, which was the same model as my old PC - My new Dell XPS 8500, there were a few windows related problems on my old machine, such as boot up/UEFI startup issues, so I ended up transferring some items to OneDrive, from my old PC, as I knew at the time that it’s death would be unavoidable/imminent. However, something might have happened during copying, some of my aircraft flowers to my new machine, as I believe the Internet may have a problem and it must’ve stop the process prematurely possibly, so maybe it’s a that certain aircraft folders or files have been transferred either some in full/entirety, or at least partly, or with missing necessary elements, and it’s caused a problem with my game?

The only thing is that if there was a problem with those files being transferred to my new dell PC, I didn’t copy any of the old FSX DLL’s/main files, and I just limited the transfer, to only both my scenery and aircraft files?

They also be another 3rd possible explanation, as I believe I’ve narrowed down the problem further, it seems like my above post, may be in error, eg not the problem at fault. I have checked my FSX.cfg file, for any signs of errors, and I have discovered two lines of the same gauge, which is the: B737_400.dll, there are currently to trusted string lines showing, for the same gauge. Furthermore, I have noticed that when I’m using any of my add-on or non-default aircraft, when I select either the ‘Tower’ menu option, or either the ‘AI Traffic’ menu option, it crashes almost instantly, eg - it pauses with a Windows circle cursor, and then it CTD.

Furthermore, I tried starting up my desired flight plan, time date and original location, in the FSX start-up menu area, and selected a default FSX aircraft, for example, they Microlight AirCreation one, and it crashed almost instantly, eg it paused with the cursor, and it then crashed/closed even more quickly. Could fish then be indicative of a default aircraft error? As why are there 2 separate gauges, with different ‘letter/number codes or IDs’, eg - B737_400.dll in FSX.cfg?

It sounds like your backup files are corrupted/incomplete or both. I would start with a fresh install of FSX, run it to check that all is well, and then re-download and install your add-ons from their original sources (freeware and payware) rather than trust your backup files.

I tried doing that in the time in between writing on here and waiting for a reply, with some minor success, eg I first removing one of the excess lines at random from the FSX.cfg file, and when I loaded one of my addon (non FSX default) aircraft, it again asked me again, to see if I wanted to log/trust that particular extra “Boeing 737_400.dll gauge”, and I selected the ‘No option’, this time. And I then reloaded the aircreation Microlight aircraft, that had previously crashed straight away, and this time it didn’t crash straight away and the menus seem to work, when I selected the ‘tower’ or ‘AI traffic’ menu options, but I haven’t had a chance yet to go on a long flight yet to see if it will crash after its usual 10 to 15 minutes though. But however, when I rechecked my ‘FSX.cfg’, just a few minutes ago, I noticed that the 2 separate gauges for the same plane, eg ‘Boeing 737_400.dll’, had reappeared, which may indicate that next time I load the program/game again, it will crash again.

It was the AIA Boeing 757-300, which I believe had a - Default FSX: Boeing 737_400 Gauge installed, and every time I tried loading that aircraft, or any other add-on or Default FSX aircraft, with the: Boeing 737_400.dll gauge, it would ask me in a pop-up message, “do I want to trust this gauge/software?”. And if I select the ‘yes button’, then apparently loads of bad things start happening. While we’ve been speaking on here, I have tried replacing the default gauge, on all of my addon (non-FSX aircraft), eg Boeing 737-300 to Boeing 767-400: inclusive, with the Default FSX, Boeing 737-800 gauge, I’ll also let you know how that turns out in an hour or so on here. But it’s worth noting on here (At least), that the gauge, that seems to be causing the problems, was copied over from my previous PC, and I know that FSX Gauges use .cab files, so if any of them are corrupted, it can cause this type of error possibly (AI_Player.dll).

The AI Aardvaark (AIA) Boeing 757-330 is an AI aircraft only; it shouldn't be flyable. Whoever has converted it did so for use in FS2004 because the Boeing 737_400.dll is a default FS9 gauge.

You need to search for and install an FSX-native 757 model and panel instead.

Hi again, ok, but my previous message, may also be false, it now appears, as it seems again, whatever FSX aircraft is, when I use the menus they still crash, as I just tried another flight, under the new settings, and it crashed again within 10 to 15 minutes of flying, after I used either the ‘tower’, ‘runway’, or ‘AI Traffic’ menu buttons. I just got another type of faulting module, in event viewer, from FSX, and this time it says: MSCTF.dll. I’ll have to set some time aside this weekend, to have a more thorough search through everything, and maybe resume everything, either on Friday or Saturday, as whatever the issue seems to be at seems to be very complex.
