Yours is in better condition than this one that crash-landed in a swamp in PNG during WWII.

Another view of the C-47 wreck.  It was not alone as not all that far away was this P-38 Lightning.  It had a bright green shamrock painted on the port side by the cockpit.  It possibly was not a nice landing as the nose wheel was pushed up well into the cockpit.  At another site was the wreck, if you could call  it that, of what we believed to be an A-20.  We could not  determine if it was Australian or American as both air forces operated the type in the area.  It had clipped a re-entrant and pieces were sprayed in a fan from the point of impact.  At the furtherst distance were the two engines.  We recovered several 0.5 caliber machine guns and radios,  all in bad condition.  The workshop got one of the machine guns back into operation but no one  was prepared to put a live round into it and fire it.

Awesome stuff. Were these in the vicinity of an airfield?

They were a few hours drive from Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.  During the war, there were several major airfields at Port Moresby (Jacksons and Eight Mile).  Today, only Jacksons remains and is the international airport for Port Moresby.  It has probably disappeared by now, but back then a B24 Liberator, laying in  shallow  water, was clearly visible on approach to Jacksons.
