Test Request: Strange Looking Ships at Halifax, NS

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can see if you see the same thing. Around the harbour in Halifax, Nova Scotia, some of the moored ships show strange artifacts. This is with or without mods, and in DX11 and 12. See the screenshots below.

Is anyone willing to see if you see the same thing? It's really strange. The final screenshot shows the place on the map of one of the affected ships, but there are 4 or 5 in the general harbour area the look like this, others seem normal. It's always the same ships too. Lastly, it's like the artifacts get worse the further you get (up to a point); so when you approach an affected ship, it seems to improve somewhat.

Thanks!

This looks like a LOD (Level Of Detail) model issue, from a distance the sim can't decide whether the ship is a small island, a funfair, or a ship! I use the Seafront Simulations ships which are worth it for the wake and smoke effects alone, but their model library is free in Content Manager and may cure this problem for you.

That's so strange. I wonder what's causing this.

I have Global AI Ship Traffic enabled, mostly to see if it fixes the problem. Obviously it doesn't, but that's why I have more ship traffic than normal.

I'm also on the SU11 beta, but it didn't change anything.

But notwithwstanding GAIST, and SU11 beta, I noticed the artifacts from day 1 on a fresh installation. And I mean day 1, because I was away from the sim for several months and when I came back to it on a rebuilt PC without any mods, Halifax is the first place I visited and I noticed this.

The only thing out of the ordinary is that the sim is installed at a non-default location on a seperate drive. But that shouldn't change much.

I've also tried off-line caching, no difference.

Try deleting the rolling cache, re-start the sim, then enable it again. The default size is 8gb.

I don't know how often Bing Maps is updated, but the USS Gerald R Ford Aircraft carrier arrived in Halifax harbour 2 weeks ago. Maybe that's what it is (or supposed to be).

Judging by what I've seen in Jacksonville, FL, not very often. One place in downtown Jacksonville was demolished in July of 2019 and it is still standing in MSFS :)

Thanks for your replies everyone!

Yup, I saw the Ford (and the rest of the carrier group) in the harbour - it was a sight to behold. But the artifacts I showed in this thread predates that by a few weeks.

Also, I tried again with no mods, no rolling cache, no manual cache, updated drivers, DX11, and DX12. No change.
