Across The Americas

Never been to Alert? Here are two words:

Don't go!

Alert is the northernmost airstrip in the world, and at the time I was making these flights, it was still winter. Which meant 24 hours of darkness. So there isn't much point in trying to show you the aircraft , a Lockheed Electra, because all you'd see would be a dark blob.

My co-pilot, however, did grab a picture of the cockpit just before we set out.

So our job is to fly from CYLT down to SAWH at the tip of South America.

It's difficult to navigate in that part of the world, but I eventually made my first stop at the US airbase in Thule, Greenland.

I didn't get a chance to post an update last night.

Using a liberal amount of the top-down view and time compression (I'm not a real pilot so both of those are allowed...yeah...that's it...) I made my way to Iqaluit.

I made landfall at the tiny city of...I'm not going to try to pronounce that name.

As we were descending, the number two engine shut down and I couldn't get it restarted. Not the type of situation you want to be in flying over an unfamiliar area at night. Somehow I had hit the switch which controlled the fuel flow and when I turned it back on, the engine started again.

We didn't stay long, I didn't even offer the passengers the option of stretching their legs. Just topped up the tanks, checked the maps, and headed out again.

Turns out coincidences do happen. It had been my plan to stop at home to refuel and rest, and it was when I was only a while out that the text came it. They had reneged on payment.

No problem, after having just gone twice around the world in addition to what I was doing here, I'm going home to sleep in my bed.

Been up there a few times. Not only is the GPS map a little whacked, but when you save your flight and go to reload the next day it takes foooorever to load! The Sim doesn't like extreme northern and southern latitudes.

I was in San Diego when I got word they still needed me down in South America. At least I won't have to go in some little puddle jumper.

How come I always seem to end up flying at night?

Hmmm...

Ready to land at SAWH, where I've been told a top secret aircraft is waiting for me to ferry it back up north.

My co-pilot and I had to be very careful so as not to give it so much power as to become uncontrollable, but eventually we lined up with the runway.

We powered right up to 100,000 feet, but then dropped down to a lower altitude to make the flight to Titusville in Florida.
