Downwind66
Wow, as a passenger, you'd almost need a pair of roller blades to get from the rear of the aircraft to the front! This bad boy is long! 189 passengers, probably wasn't that fuel efficient. No wonder they went with the newer, more efficient, carries more passengers, 2 engine aircraft! She's still a beauty, regardless of negatives! DAVIDSTRAKA
You sure found a beauty there Rick! kalizzi
oh yes Rick, the DC-8 is a beauty. I have it from Just Flight, and am contemplating buying the Aerosoft version. From the looks of those engines in your screenshot, this is a late model with turbofans, which means its not as bad with fuel consumption as you make it out to be. I remember reading an article once on Flying magazine about the HS-125 700 (TFE-731 turbofan engine) saying it burns on economic cruise the same amount of fuel the original RR Viper turbojet engined variant (HS-125 series 100 thru 600) burns on ground idle! Downwind66
Khalid - I should have worded it differently. yes, they have made great strides in improving fuel efficiency! What I was talking about, was carrying 189 passengers using 4 engines, when in todays commercial airline industry, they are accomplishing the same thing with only 2 engines! Yes, they are still flying 4 engine aircraft, but the are carrying twice as many passengers! The Airbus 340 and 380 are a couple examples. They're all good, it's just a matter of what can give the airlines a "bigger bang for their buck!"
NMLW
Very nice Rick. The DC-8 was just another step up the ladder to more modern jet aviation. It was a big deal at the time.  :) Larry
ColR1948
I worked on a few of those when Evergreen cargo was flying in to Manchester, pushed a few pallets of freight down one of them and loaded the hold as well. I have a few in my hangar now I'm in retro mode in my sim. Col.
peer01
I remember the first KLM DC-8's. Noisy and smoky, but beautiful and impressive. Thanks for posting these pic, I'm going to check to check the whole DC-8 and Boeing 707 fleet I have in my hanger. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
