FSX on Steam

[GunnerOIF2003]

I have play FS since it first came out, every version came on CD's. I took a very long break and now have a very high end PC with two Displays and GE Force 1080 card.

 

I bought FSX via Steam since all the cd's are long gone and I can't seem to get decent graphics, very graining. I've been searching on how to try and take advance of a better looking Game.

 

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I also have 2 Dell UltraSharp 27 4K Monitor - U2718Q coming soon. I do play other games and with the graphics card with these two monitors I'll be set. I just want to get the most out of FSX.

 

I also found my FSX DVD's, wife put them away. Not sure if it's the complete set though: FSX Gold, Disc 1 and 2, plus Acceleration Pack. Probably didn't need steam version since I found these.

First, your FSX DVDs are complete - you should have TWO activation keys with it, one for FSX and one for Accel...…….

 

WRT to your graphics issue - I suggest changing the FSX resolution to the same resolution of the monitors. Your current setting in the FSX.cfg (shown below), is the default FSX setting.

Mode=1024x768x32

 

Ideally, FSX should be set to the native resolution of your monitors - so for example, if your monitor is a 1920x1080 then you should set FSX to that.

 

You will also see that the resolutions end in either 16 or 32 - this refers to the bit rate and you should use the higher number.

 

To change the resolution start FSX. When the splash screen is up click on the Settings option in the menu list located on the left hand side of the screen. On the new screen select Customize located at bottom right of the Display settings section. Now select the appropriate screen resolution from the list and click OK. This will reset the screen. Exit FSX so that the .cfg file is updated. Restart FSX and test.

 

Your current .cfg entry also shows that you are only using basic rendering. Under the Screen resolution list is some filtering options - what is available will be based on the capabilities of your graphics card. Note however, that using these options, especially higher settings, can have a big impact on frame rates/smoothness etc - the only to way to find a setting that works for you is to make small changes and test...….

 

You will also notice a number of Tabs across the top - the Scenery tab is another area where you can make changes that will affect the visuals - again small changes and testing is the way forward,

Stay with the Steam edition. I find the the steam version runs better and smoother. I alway had issues with the boxed version crashing to desktop (CTD) when I was using it to the point where I went back to fs2004/FS9. Gave FSX steam a tried and only have had one CTD in over a 1000 hours of flying due to a faulty freeware scenery download. If the Steam version is the only version you have install on your computer there should be very few add-ons that will work. The only add-one I could not get to work was the Abacus Premier aircraft installer.

Furthermore, if you had the FSX box edition installed or still installed as well, there may be some add-ons that may not work in FSX steam edition until FSX boxed edition is removed completely.

Search in Google for: FSX TweakFS Registry Utility

 

Then you can review/assign the correct registry paths you want for FSX and give priority to FSX SE to FSX Boxed or viceversa.

 

There are (old) installers that point only to FSX Boxed and it is not possible to change the path when installing. Then you can create a "fake" FSX Boxed and install there the addons and later copy to FSX SE

Don't understand some settings? Was the .cfg hacked by someone?

 

I would start by renaming the FSX.cfg to FSX.cfg.OLD and re-starting the sim, to allow it to create a new one.

 

As mentioned, that resolution choice of 1024x768x32 is fundamentally wrong for your package, and you should review that.

Along with a refreshed fsx .cfg, that should solve your issues.

As others have stated you should be fine with either version.

 

As John has stated at post #9 the steam version does appear to be more stable. That said, I am running the boxed version (although I the Steam version in my Steam library I am yet to install it (brought it in a sell as 'insurance' for when I may need to reinstall FSX) and have had very few CTDs since it has been installed (over 6 years on the current rig).

 

The main reason that the Steam version appears more stable is because the FSX.cfg file comes with a number of well known and proven 'tweaks' already incorporated and it also has a copy of a file called UIAutomationCore.DLL already included. This .dll can stop a small number of different CTDs but its primary use is to stop CTDs caused by use of the FSX menu options - basically after the menu system has been accessed a number of times (to change views, bring up pop-ups etc) it would CTD......

Thanks folks, Steam it is. FSX.cfg was modified already, that was an old copy and when I switch to my dual monitors and CH flight controls (if I can find them), it will be modified again. Again, thanks folks, I appreciate the help in getting back into this hobby. Still rusty on the FMC though, lol.
