jparnold
After using FSX for many years and reading how much better PR3D v4 is I decided to give it a go and so far like it apart from a couple of things which I am hoping someone will have the answers to. I have a a system with i7 4770 3.4Ghz CPU 8Gb DDR3 1600 ram and an Nvidia GTX1050 video card. Firstly using the default settings from the initial installation I am getting around 100fps BUT every (approx) 3 seconds the display appears to freeze for a split second and then 'catch up' making the display sort of 'jump'. Any ideas what could be causing this and what setting could correct it. Secondly on taking off in either the Baron or King Air they start banking to the left requiring manual adjusting with with the joystick or aileron trim tab. I could understand this happening with a single prop aircraft from the engine torque but not with a twin prop especially a twin turbo. Lastly what setting in the config will adjust the look of the 2D cockpit so that round gauges look round - I can't remember but feel I once saw this in an FSX forum. mallcott
The limitation is GTX1050 card. But you can improve things by setting a suitable fps limit that matches what your card is capable of: 24 fps if using a 60 hertz monitor, or a huge resolution (4K); 30 fps if using a 30 hertz monitor or lower resolution. As for the Baron and King Air, check your CofG settings and fuel. P3D accentuates the effects of weight off the centre line and presuming you don't have the weight balanced either side of the centre line, you will see this effect. Plus neither aircraft uses `handed` props so they both turn the same way, and given the power, the torque effect is noticeable. Adjusting trim to deal with the effect is the right way to deal with it. Finally, set your resolution to suit the size of monitor. You clearly have a mismatch. vgbaron
Also, look for anything running in the background that might cause the stutters. If you installed into the default C:\Programfiles folder I suggest you uninstall and reinstall P3D into it's own folder like C:\P3D. Check your calibration for your stick/yoke etc. With the proper settings, you should get nice results with the 1050. jparnold
Thanks Vic and Mallcott, I had rechecked and recalibrated my joystick without improvement and I already have P3D installed on a different DISK ( N: ) which is an SSD drive although it is in the Program Files\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4\ folder on that disk - is that ok or should it be in the top 'level' of the disk where I have it? While I waited for your replies I Googled the problem and got a few 'hits' for "P3D stutters" which gave some hope and in fact I made a change to the DISPLAY settings in P3D which at this time appears to have corrected the 'stutter'. I cannot remember 100% but think I changed FXAA to be ON instead of OFF. Other settings there are currently AA set to 4xMSAA and texturing filter set to Anisotropic 8x Screen resolution is set to 1920X1080X32 which is the same for Windows etc. One person suggested setting Frame Rate Control VSync to ON with Triple Buffering 'ticked' but that didn't seem to have any affact so I set it back to OFF - any feedback on that? I checked my monitor (Samsung S27C450B) and its native resolution is 1920X1080 at 60Hz refresh rate and I don't seem to be able to change that using NVidia Control Centre. I didn't realise that the Baron and King Air didn't have contra-rotating props and that answers that question and I will put in some trim before flights. jparnold
Well I thought that I had solved the 'stutter' but it remains. I have now gone through each different 'setting' in the 'graphics' section of settings and tried each different 'setting' with no improvement. I never had this problem with FSX and still don't (I still have it installed). Looking at the ground from the aircraft every 4 seconds the movement of the ground as it moves towards the aircraft hesitates for a split second and then continues. Very annoying. vgbaron
Check that your AV isn't scanning the P3D files on open. Also, 3.4ghz is doable but really on the edge. Any chance of overclocking that chip? MrUnSavory
You would be better served going to the P3D forum at Lockheed Martin. Always go to the experts for your questions. :)
jparnold
Thanks for replies and suggestions. I wasn't aware that Lockheed also has a forum. I will try that. Vic I don't understand "Check that your AV isn't scanning the P3D files on open". Also if 3.4Ghz is "on the edge" (it isn't the K type chip so can't overclock) I find it strange that with fps set to unlimited I get around 80fps in the scenario I am using where the display jumps. I have also tried setting the fps to a limit of 60 and also 30 which I would have thought would make some difference. Also I get a similar fps with the same aircraft type and airport using FSX but the display is silky smooth. I wonder if I reduced all the scenery settings 'sliders' towards the left it it might help? I can't work out how to attach my prepar3d.cfg file and it is rather long to insert with my reply or doesn't that matter? Something you failed to mention was the use of the Affinity Mask. Not necessary with P3Dv4 except under very specific circumstances which you don't have. Delete it, Report back. Also, you do not appear to be using a frame rate lock, despite mentioning it in a previous post. With YOUR rig I would recommend locking the frame rate in the sim to no more than 24 fps. It may be an idea to rename prepar3d .cfg to prepar3d .cfg.OLD and have the sim create a new one.
jparnold
Thanks Mallcott, I uninstalled PR3D v4 PLUS I deleted the Lockheed Martin folder in c:/users/'my name'/appdata/Roaming as it remained after I uninstalled and I wanted to ensure nothing was carried over especially the cfg file. I set fps to 24 (although this is a 'foreign' fps for where I live) and now the display is smooth - well as smooth as 24fps allows and I will try increasing that to maybe 50fps and check the result later. Strangely I have no idea how the affinity_mask setting got into the cfg file. While I changed it from what it was (to match my 4 core CPS with hyperthreading) I did not add it in the first place even though I have done so for FSX in the past. Could it be that PR3D is 64 bit and FSX 32 bit? I have looked at the new cfg file and it seems quite diffeernt from what I had before. Anyway I am a "happy little vegemite" now (you probably have no idea what I am talking about). The P3d .cfg varies from version to version of Prepar3d, so my guess is you've carried over some old settings, and they've been fixed by opting for a new Prepar3d .cfg
vgbaron
Some anti virus programs can be set to scan every file on open which can cause your issues. You are looking for a BALANCE John - in P3D fps is not important - smoothness is. Obviously 80fps and stuttering isn't working. Your weak link is the 3.4 CPU and also a weak but acceptable video card. The higher you set your fps the more load you put on the cpu - it will TRY to maintain the higher fps but it sacrifices smooth performance to do it. Adjust your settings to get the LOWEST fps you can with the smoothest operation not the highest. I have my systems set at 20 fps and they are perfectly smooth - I can also run at 30fps but what for? It doesn't improve anything but the fps number which is irrelevant if it's smooth. jparnold
Thanks Mallcott and just to add - I said, "Do you speak my language?" He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich Thanks Vic, Aha wasn't thinking of my virus scanner anyway it is fixed now. Regarding fps. Someone suggested that perhaps I should ensure my monitor is set to 30Hz which I can't work out how to do as my only option with native 1920X1080 is 60Hz. IN any case wouldn't it be best to set fps to best 'fit' with the monitor Hz eg 30fps or 60fps? When I set the fps to 30 it does seem smoother than at 24 with no 'faltering' in fact I can set it at 60fps and still no faltering. BTW are there any 'hidden traps' in removing aircraft from the simobjects folder which I never want to use eg fighter planes. This would make it easier to find aircraft when selecting one to use. Lastly what a shame that the B7737 or A320 is not an aircraft which ships with PR3D or can the FSX B737 be used in PR3D v4 or even the PMDG 737 NGX (addon for FXS) which I have. Cheers John Forget it if you don't have a monitor that offers the option to operate at 30hz. It was just a suggestion, And no, you don't want to operate a 60 hz monitor at 60 frames per second. They are completely - COMPLETELY - different things. P3Dv4 does not need high frame rates. It needs smooooothness. This will be found at some distance from a high fps rate - the 60 fps you mention will be unreachable with your rig unless you remove all the complex settings. So set a fps rate in sim that IS achievable - somewhere in the 20-30 fps region should do it. You seem to have settled on 30 fps for your rig on your in-sim settings. So that bit's done, now leave it alone and go fly..!
mallcott
Thanks Mallcott and just to add - SNIP BTW are there any 'hidden traps' in removing aircraft from the simobjects folder which I never want to use eg fighter planes. Cheers John NEVER remove the default aircraft from the SimObjects folder. Many aftermarket aircraft use gauges, sounds or alias settings that call on those aircraft, and they form the basis of the AI. You will notice that properly-compiled P3Dv4 addons do NOT use the SimObjects folder. If they do, they are not complying with Lockheed-Martins express instructions or are not TRUE P3Dv4 compiled addons. Be warned. Addons can currently use SimObjects for installation, but that merely indicates the laziness of the developer, adopting FSX-style installation. Carenado, Milviz and PMDG are among those that do (there are many others so it's not confined to the cheap'n'nasty end of the market) - and it may work for V4, but its almost inevitable that from v5 or v6 L-M will `close that door`. Addon aircraft `belong` in the xml.dll method, with aircraft flies located in the `P3D Addons` folder in your Documents. That way they can be installed properly; the files they contain can run alongside files with the same name; and they can be left in-situ with the part-updates now permitted by the sequential L-M updates - v4 to v5 when it comes along, for example. DO NOT DELETE aircraft in the SimObjects folder
vgbaron
Rather than delete, consider marking your favorites and only display them when looking for an a/c to fly. jparnold
Thanks Mallcott I will leave fps set at 30 ALTHOUGH I feel that 60 is very achievable with all the settings as they were set during installation (I assume that the installer has some artificial intelligence at setting them to values for the system it is being installed on) as the fps displayed top left (press shift Z) REMAINS at 60fps maybe dropping to 59 occasionally) so if it remains at 60 without changing all the time doesn't that mean it is achievable? Also at 60 is does seem to me to be slightly smoother than when at 30. Can monitor 'persistence rate' help with smoothness or isn't that a factor anymore with LED monitors? Lastly (sorry to labor this point) but as the monitor screen is made up of tiny 'dots' and at 30fps a particular part of the image moves 2 dots from where it was but at 60fps it only moves half as many eg 1 dot, isn't that smoother? Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree as although I am an ex computer programmer (was for 25 years) and know lots about software and its design etc I don't know as much about hardware. Anyway I will leave it at 30 and maybe up the world settings (which have been set during installation not particularly high (see image) until I see a degradation of the fps displayed and then reduce them slightly to remain at 30. Lastly , no problems removing aircraft (from the PR3D install) from (folder) simobjects/aircraft? vgbaron
Lastly , no problems removing aircraft (from the PR3D install) from (folder) simobjects/aircraft? Really a bad idea. That is essentially removing core simulator files. **IF** you know for sure that NONE of the files in the folder you are deleting are in use by another a/c you might take a shot - again not recommended. If you must, MOVE the entire folder to a storage spot so if something goes wrong you can easily replace it without having to reinstall the sim. Still easier to mark your favorites and only display those in your list. jparnold
Thanks Vic. No I would just move the files rather than delete. I just wanted to 'cleanup' the aircraft selection screen to make it easier to find the aircraft I am interested. On your suggestion (didn't notice this feature before) I have 'marked' my favorite aircraft (clicked on the star changing it to yellow) but how do you just display those marked as favorite? On your suggestion (didn't notice this feature before) I have 'marked' my favorite aircraft (clicked on the star changing it to yellow) but how do you just display those marked as favorite? Obvious: Check the box `Show Only Favorites` on the LHS of the aircraft selection screen, after adding the checkmark to your selection of aircraft. You might also want to eliminate the detailed aircraft selection screen by clicking the box on the lower left corner of the same aircraft selection screen - `Hide Details`. This then provides a larger view of the selection screen - nearly 20 aircraft instead of the five or six. Have you actually got this sim loaded? Surely you've experimented with the various settings in the GUI? At the end of the day there's no substitute for getting to grips with it for yourself to tailor it to your liking. You can even move the default aircraft if YOU like, never mind what we advise. Vic and I have covered all the warnings and if you still want to move those aircraft out the worst that can happen is you will have no AI; aircraft missing gauges; aircraft displaying no sound and the occasional glitch or error... A simple Client and Content reinstall will fix it.
jparnold
Thanks Mallcott YES I do have this PR3D v4 installed. I have looked and looked and looked in the aircraft selection screen and cannot see "show only favourites" I do see "Hide Details" and select that at times. And YES I have experimented with the various settings to see if I noticed any improvement to the display and if they had adverse affects on fps (some have a big impact others negligable) Yes aircraft sometimes share gauges, sounds etc and also AI aircraft so removing aircraft can have an an effect (been there down that with FSX modifying panels with addons etc). jparnold
Hello again Regarding smooth display I found the following youtube video which shows how to change the settings for an Nvidia card as well as changing some settings within PR3D when the monitor is set to 60Hz monitors (as I have). In it the author uses NVidia Inspector (software) to change the following settings for the profile PR3D Frame Rate Limiter - change to 30 Triple Buffering - set to ON Vertical Sync - set to HALF REFRESH RATE Do you have any thoughts on this?
