FSX just disappeared!!!!

Longbreak, I am going to attempt a restore after I make a new backup. You say to run a registry cleaner but the only registry I can find only has a couple of old sim things in it, not even downloads. What sim things like FS9 and FSX files, when I open them to A/C, all they have are C-47 files. In the downloads files I see a lot of my add on's.You say that if I need to clean out FSX the Steam version will pick up my add on's? I seem to remember when I read up on the uninstall for the FSX, it required a long convoluted sequence of events, such as copying each and every add on separate, then reinstalling the same way. It also said I would have to use the original reg keys and passwords. Those are few and far between since the add on were a while back, the last being early last year. Will start with the failed FSX start up and then go to Event Viewer. Sitrep will follow......

To clarify what I said WRT your addons working with FSX-SE - you will need to uninstall them and then reinstall them pointing the installer to the FSX-SE install location.......

WRT the registry clean - a bit confused by your comment regarding the only registry you can find........... - the registry that I refer to is the Windows Registry which is a controlled by the OS. Simply download CCleaner, install and run.

WRT to the overall issue. I suspect that there is some confusion WRT to some of the definitions that your are using.........

Can you confirm that:

A. The current FSX install is from the original disks or from some sort of download.

B. Have you installed SP2 over this install.

Something simple to try - locate the FSX.cfg file in your main FSX directory and rename it FSX_old.cfg. Start FSX and it should build a new one - see what happens and report back

Regards

If each one needs to be uninstalled then reinstalled, with out the reg numbers or pass keys, thats a no go. Then there is the matter of there being probably 18 or so add ons, just in A/C, not counting terrain downloads. When I search for the windows registry all that comes up is a single file for a R4df sim, and not even all of that is there. Have run search for the FSX directory and/or FSX.cfg and all I can get is the same R4df file. Yes, the sim is directly from the boxed set, I tore open the clear seal and No SP2.

Noone said anything about searching the registry.

The advice is to install the program CCleaner. (from piriform). Then use the registry cleaning function in that. It finds useless stuff in the registry and deletes those.

Beginning to think I have some other problem. I found and downloaded the CCCleaner free version. It shows in the download file, 9K + bits. But I get nothing to open or run the program. When I click it in downloads, it opens asking if I want it to change things in the computer and I click yes and thats where everything ends. No pop up, nothing in desktop, nothing in files. Something is blocking any downloads. This along with not being able to open 2 other anti-virus programs I had originally is just too odd.

So you are unable to open previously working anti-virus programs? All new downloads are being blocked from opening? It's sounding like your computer is infected with malware.

I use WinZip Malware that's on a once a day scan, covers cookies, files and folders, sys memory, windows settings and sys registry. I also have WinClean Pro and system Mechanic for simple scans, but they had to be started manually. Neither will come up now. They did before.

So like so many other companies, ours is good, theirs is bad? According to the info, WinZip is only a sham. Kinda like religions, ours is the one, join us or go to Hell! So, using this as the gospel, I can go to Malwarebytes and my "soul" will be saved?

I use Malwarebytes free version and it does just fine! Now if you download and try to install it and it won't open or work, then You have malicious malware on your computer preventing things from working.

Well, then that's what I have! Downloaded, clicked to start and NOTHING. So I will assume its a take it to the PC guru's since it won't allow me to download anything to attack it.

That will be your safest bet. Hope it hasn't compromised any banking or personal info on your computer.

As Hans has suggested, start in Safe mode and see if your AV suite runs.

Other options are to download the Norton Power Eraser - its free and is a very powerful tool - see HERE to download it, HERE for a guide to run it in normal mode and HERE for a guide on how to run it in safe mode.

Or download the AVG Rescue CD - again free and very powerful. The good thing about this tool is that it can be run in Safe mode OR via a bootable CD or USB drive - it can be found HERE - there are two links on the page that provide info on how to create and use the bootable media.

WRT your comments made in post #39 - many users of this forum have years of experience of using the various AV/Anti-malware products available. Some are even certified IT specialist. They, and myself for that matter, rarely recommend such tools solely based on the advertising blurb but do so based on our experience of using the tool(s). I have used both of the tools I have mentioned to remove infections on machines so know that they work if used correctly.

To take your argument further, the fact the you have installed what appears to be sham program must mean that either:

A. You downloaded and installed the tool after reading the blurb and were taken in by the 'ours is good and all others are bad' argument.

B. You unwittingly or intentionally downloaded it, as part of another program that linked it as a recommended addon without checking what it really was.

In the case of my own rigs, I have used versions of Norton and Malwarebytes over the years and have NEVER suffered an infection.

Well, my sim are back up and running. Kept staring at the damn thing then broke down and called the Geek Squad guys and set up a time to bring "Broken Betty" in. Then went back to staring. I kept running over advise and stuff I'd heard and remembered something about ant virus stuff can cause trouble if there are even old anti virus downloads not being used as they are still running in the background.Figured I had nothing to lose so went in and started deleting stuff. Dumped two re-booted and nothing. Dumped the last one , re booted and BAM here was FSX back, a little shakey but back. I deleted the service pack 2 and reinstalled and that brought all back but my WOP P-51 civilian download. Could not get sound back or get to start. Could do nothing in the hangar at all. Deleted and reinstalled and still a bust. But my WOP -40, -47 and B-17 are just perfect, as well as all the others. So, I will either purchase a new -51 or try out the T-6 sim. Again thanks for all the advise and help with this......I was just so sure it was something simple. Geeks wanted $150 to go through the system............they swore it was probably a malware attack. I did download Malwarebytes!!!

Be aware that malwarebytes is on longer a simple on-demand scanner. After it became malwarebytes 3.0 even the freeware version runs all the time.

It was also brought out prematurely and there are some issues with the program. Google: malwarebytes 3.0 problems

You'll find lots of info.
