Fsx.cfg file corrupted

Recommended Posts

I received this message and the sim won't load:

"Flight Simulator cannot find the default flight file. Please restore the file or reinstall Flight Simulator"

I have not had this problem before. Previously I had deleted this file from the "users roaming" backup I keep, but this doesn't work.

I've tried to research this issue on this forum and online, but this doesn't seem to assist me.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Keith

Go into your FSX.cfg and delete anything after situation= down to the next line of text. This should let the Sim run and you can create a new default flight.

If deleting the fsx.cfg file didn't help, then I think clearing everything after:

situation="delete what it says here"

will also not help.

Deleting that part, forces fsx to rebuild the fsx.cfg. You make it:

situation=

Start fsx,

close fsx,

and the line will have changed to:

SITUATION=FLIGHTS\OTHER\FLTSIM

THat refers to a file, not in C:\My Documents\Flight simulator X Files

(where all saved flights are.)

It is a reference to the "ultralight over Friday harbour" flight stored in:

..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Flights\other

the filename there is:

DEFAULT_enu.FLT

(there are several .FLT files in that folder actually, for different language versions of fsx it seems.)

Make sure that file exists in your folder.

If not, restore it from a backup.

I did a little testing.

I had the fsx.cfg set to the default flight.

(SITUATION=FLIGHTS\OTHER\FLTSIM)

I disabled file:

..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Flights\other\DEFAULT_enu.FLT

By renaming to:

..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Flights\other\DEFAULT_enu.FLT.bak

Fsx still started right up. So that wasn't the file it seemed, or maybe if it's missing fsx uses one in another language.

I decided to be a bit more forceful in testing.

I closed FSX again.

Then renamed folder:

..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Flights\other

to

..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Flights\other-off

That did the trick, now fsx wouldn't start, and got the "default flight missing" message.

AH, but what if Keith accidentally chose the FSX.cfg.txt file to delete? I'm just trying to think outside/inside the box! Crap sometimes happens! ;)

Also thinking Keith had his own default flight set up and this is what was corrupted. Double Whammy!

You mean it could have been just an error in the line in the fsx.cfg, and he deleted the wrong "fsx.cfg (.txt))

Hadn't thought of that!

But, tested your theory,m and that's not it.

I restored the flights in, and the folder:

..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Flights\other

Then I opened the fsx.cfg file (not fsx.cfg.txt)

and edited:

SITUATION=FLIGHTS\OTHER\FLTSIM

to nonsense:

SITUATION=FLIGsdkjfnhHTS\OTHER\FLTSIM

On startup, I got the message:

error.JPG

but then.... FSX started just fine.

And after closing fsx, the line had been restored to:

SITUATION=FLIGHTS\OTHER\FLTSIM

by fsx automatically.

The only way I got it to not restore was when I had renamed:

folder:

..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Flights\other

to:

..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Flights\other-off

(by which the default flight file went "missing")

Then fsx did not start up at all.

Thank you everyone for your learned posts.

I will try all the answers.

I will do anything to avoid re-installation. Early last year I re-installed. It took me a month. I have a lot of payware, so this takes ages.

Here's what I have in folder:

..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Flights\other\

On second thought, the default flight in there is probably not what I said earlier, but is file:

FLTSIM.FLT

In my experience, for what it's worth, on FSX:SE it seems like if I don't end my session at an airport, it has a severe personal problem and won't start again. I just do the "delete the SITUATION= line" and it fires right up again. Works ALMOST every time. FOR ME. ON MY SYSTEM.

I have a shortcut to my FSX.cfg file on my desktop for when it happens. If my FSX:SE won't start, gets to the opening screen and then quits, I pop open the FSX.cfg file, delete the SITUATION= line, save it, close it and FSX fires up, no sweat. takes me about 30 seconds.

Again, just me though.

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

Hello

Thanks to you all.

I tied all day yesterday to fix this. My neighbour an IT consultant took a peak, and had no suggestions.

So I'll try again one more time..

Re-installation looms. I may try re-installment in my 2nd computer which runs on Windows 7, or I'll change to P3D as far as how it runs, how it is set up, hardware, etc..

I was running FSX on Windows 8.1, which may be causing all this trouble. I have no malware on-board.

Cheers
