Follow the River

While flying around the Grand Canyon recently I just headed out and followed the river. I used to do a lot of IFR fying. Often I'd Fly Roads. In this case I Flew the River.

Damn! I forgot this went to Las Vegas! I haven't been there in years. Let's see what's new.

Yes, that's it. Though the mountains are a lot further away than they appear here.

Looks like someone was trying to copy the Space Needle.

I suppose the Hard Rock Cafe is mandatory everywhere. I'll have to get my buddy a T-shirt. He has them from cities all over the world. He doesn't go there. He just has friends buy them for him!

Paris Huh? I guess they have a Paris Casino.

Low on fuel! Here's on the final to North Vegas. I'll add one from "outside."

I'm still not good with "outside" pictures. But I do have some shots under the rim of the Grand Canyon I'll add soon.

That sure is some sharp Lost Wages scenery Michael. Who makes it and how are the frame rates?

And there I was thinking you were following roads in a c172 or something. :p Nice pictures!

Jeh,

You're close! Here's what I said "Often I'd Fly Roads. In this case I Flew the River." And yes, back in the 60's flying 500' to 1,000' above terrain in CH-46 choppers, especially in Texas and Arizona, we had to fly roads. With no GPS or Loran all we had was compass, VORTAC and ADF.

As you probably know, VORTAC doesn't travel very far at only 1,000' above terrain! And typically if we got more than one station on the ADF to triangulate during the daytime, we felt we were lucky! So we used our AAA road maps as often as our VFR Supplements!

However one advantage to flying a chopper. More than once we set down in a field out in the country near a General Store. Then we'd walk in, buy a soft drink and ask where the ____ we were!! Of course this usually added at least 45 minutes to our ETA! Everyone in the General Store had to come out and walk around in the plane and ooh and aah.

TBTG all this was before cell phones!! They'd have called everyone for miles around and we'd have spent all day watching everyone take selfies!!;)

Great looking shots of Las Vegas! Think I will follow the Colorado river to Laughlin on my next flight.

Hey Bob,

Growing up in Kentucky I've seen a lot of broken homes due to horse racing addiction! So I almost never gamble either. And then it's maybe $30 for all day at the track.

As to the software. I have pretty much all the ORBX FTX stuff for the US. But I went to their site and didn't find a specific application which looked like it covered Vegas. I do have the photo real Grand Canyon but even though close by, that shouldn't apply. Perhaps it is the Orbx World Base, I really can't say for sure.

As to frame rates, I usually keep mine locked at 30fps and my sliders are either all the way or almost all the way to the right. Exceptions being, when I'm flying over land masses I don't have boat traffic etc. on. When primarily over the sea, I don't have highway traffic on.

So except in hugely dense areas like Heathrow, which I have additional software for, etc., I almost never have an issue at 30fps.

Having said that, I must add. I don't fly fancy planes! I don't use PMDG or most of that stuff which wasn't invented when I had to quit flying. However I do shoot approaches, fly IFR, use ILS, Autopilot, etc. And I always keep the GPS up on a side screen so I can see where I am. Speaking of GPS, I can't tell you how wonderful that would have been had it been out in the 60's!!!!!

Super Vegas shots Michael!! :) Another nice flight is from Vegas to Laughlin/Bullhead City. Laughlin Nevada is another gambling town right on the Colorado River and Bullhead City airport is in Arizona on the other side. Go's right past Lake Mead and Hoover Dam.

Thanks Adam, I'll do that. The last time I came close to flying over Hoover dam was in a CH-46. Before we even got very close we were warned off on Guard Channel! I'd like to fly over it without the hassle of armed fighter jets buzzing me!
