Honus
I would add that I think one of the big secrets to avoiding problems with FSX is to install it into its own direction on the C: drive, bypassing the "Program Files" and "Program 86" file folders. By operating it and associated programs in their own independent folders, you avoid conflicts with files located in other folders. I can say that since I installed FSX, I have not had a serious crash and it consistently gives me hours of trouble free enjoyment. Just my $0.02, though I'm sure that has been mentioned before. Jim's napping!;) Did you first create a folder on the root of your C drive labeled FSX and point the installer to it? Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer! jandjfrench
Whoa! Now hold on just a minute! Make sure you keep the main folder name of "Microsoft Flight Simulator X". I personally prefer C:\FS\ Microsoft Flight Simulator X". I keep all of my flight simulator programs in this FS folder. Makes things easy to find. Here's what I have: Jim F. JSkorna
Hi JSkorna, I tried to install it into the OS(C:) but it said I could not install it straight into a drive.... Hi, 1. There is NO REASON to create anything ahead of time. FSX will create what it needs to create. 2. There is NO REASON that the name has to be "Microsoft............anything". 3. Try this: install to C:\FSX and be all done! http://www.air-source.us/images/sigs/000219_195_jimskorna.png

JSkorna... 1 question before I do so, do I remove fsx only or do I need to remove all of my addons etc and re install everything? My secret to success with FSX is to install FSX and any addons into their own seperate directory. Do NOT install into the "Program Files" or Program 86 folders! If you do, problems will arise. I have FSX installed as: C:\FSX All it's components are then loaded there. This goes for any add on apps such as Active Sky, AI Smooth, etc. If you keep them independent, you will have less problems. DanLeeds10
I've had weeks and weeks of things like this with Windows 8.1. Firstly I wiped the machine, took all the rubbish off manufacturers insist on giving you for "free", this included my AV software as I only connect to the net on that PC for paid downloads so, windows defender will do, I'll sporadically install AVG, scan it and delete AVG at times too. My main crashes were fixed by: Adding FSX to compatibility mode - for win7 I'm sure this is just clicking the FSX icon and changing this in properties, in Win8 & 8.1 i typed compatibility into the search field and followed on screen advice. 8.1 put FSX in Vista compatibility mode. My other crashes were caused by running 2 monitors on a weak graphics card, my PC came with a factory GTX760 1.5gb card, I could only run things on medium high graphics with 2 monitors because it topped out the GPU performance. In the end I've now added a EVGA GTX960 SSC 2gb and it runs so so sweetly it's untrue, the graphics are awesome but, it can still lag occasionally. My budget was £200 and I don't trust 2nd hand GPU's, many schools of thought say FSX isn't that GPU intensive but, if you're running multiple displays it will significantly drain resource - I have a special monitoring package I use for my job, added this to the PC and found the weak spots that way. Final thing for me was FSXappcrash error, for this i followed the UIAutomationcore.dll fix and, FSX hasn't crashed since. I now run all my monitors, on full ultra high settings with no lag and no crashes. I do have an I7 4790 CPU but it's none K, runs at 3.60GHz standard but, can push it to 3.80GHz with the turbo clock setting in the BIOS. Hope this helps, I know how soul destroying the crashes are but, once they're fixed it's so worth it :-) ACER Predator G3-605 2014 build, Windows 8.1 64bit, 16gb DDR3, I7 4790 3.60GHz ( not K version ) but turbo clocked, EVGA GTX960 2gb SSC Saitek pro yoke, throttle and rudder pedals. FSX deluxe with many many paid addons.
DanLeeds10
I had this error and resolved it by running FSX.exe in compatibility mode on win8.1, I also needed to do the FSX Appcrash fix by downloading and adding UIAUTOMATIONCORE.dll. Since doing those 2 fixes it's been stable and working perfectly :-) ACER Predator G3-605 2014 build, Windows 8.1 64bit, 16gb DDR3, I7 4790 3.60GHz ( not K version ) but turbo clocked, EVGA GTX960 2gb SSC Saitek pro yoke, throttle and rudder pedals. one299man
Hi. I am wondering if anyone can help with a fix. I have started to try and use FSX now since I downloaded Windows 10. I had issues before with windows 8.1 possibly since my computer has the API graphic card. I can not even load MSTS with this graphic card. Anyway FSX will run but if I try and save a flight, my screen goes black. I figured out a way to save flights but it requires me to hit cont alt del several times in order to type in the name. I have saved FSX to a different hard drive and dowloaded and installed all the earlier patches. Please someone help. Thank you Gerry

PhantomTweak
Like a dream :D Me, I have mine over on (ready??) D:\temp\Steam\Steamapps\common\FSX. Does that answer your question? Add-ons I put in place like D:\temp\FS Add-Ons and D:\Temp\FSX Add-ON Scenery. And so on. Does that answer your question?
