Runway over Motorway

Recommended Posts

There's been much incredulity in the lay press over the suggestion that a third runway at Heathrow could be built on a bridge over the M25 motorway.

This has been countered by aviation "experts" who say there are many existing examples around the world.

But all the pictures I've seen are TAXIWAYS over motorways.

Are there any true runways, where drivers can see a large airliner land just in front of them?

I would have thought the distraction would be a pile up waiting to happen!

There used to be, at the old Denver Stapleton, 35L AND 35R (and adjacent taxiways) which did exactly that. The overpasses have been removed now for a number of years, since Denver International replaced Stapleton, but those runways were in use over the Interstate 70 highway for quite a number of years.
