The usage of VR is steadily increasing, Norway has the most flight simulator enthusiasts per capita and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is still the most popular flight simulator software. These are some of the findings presented in the FlightSim Community Survey 2022. For the seventh consecutive year, Navigraph partnered with 35 major addon developers and organizations within the flight simulation community to organize the FlightSim Community Survey, the world's largest and most comprehensive survey of its kind. A total of 25,400 respondents contributed to this year's survey to help develop the flight simulation community. Virtual Reality Development The VR usage has been increasing steadily over the past two years according to the respondents. More than one in four now owns a VR headset, and over 62% of the VR owners use it for flight simulation. The most popular headset is the HP Reverb G2, which is primarily used by more than 37% of the respondents. In 2nd place, we find the Oculus Quest 2 at almost 25%, followed by the Oculus rift Sat 12%. Popular Graphic Cards It is not a secret that flight simulators can be demanding when it comes to graphics card performance. With over 82%, Nvidia is clearly the most popular manufacturer of graphics cards among the respondents. This year, the RTX 3080 is the most popular graphics card used by17.2% of the Nvidia owners, followed by the RTX 3070 at 10.9%. When it comes to AMD, the Radeon RX 5700 XT is the most used AMD graphics card at 14.0%. The second most popular one is the RX 6900 XT, closely followed by the RX 6800 XT. Challenges Within Flight Simulation When asked about the hardest parts of flight simulation respondents rated Weight and Balance, Radio Communications and Power vs. Economy in cruise among the most challenging areas. The results also found some weaknesses in slow flight, control wheel steering, descent planning, and VNAV. Most Popular Flight Simulation Software This year, X-Plane 12 was launched, but Microsoft Flight Simulator2020 remains the most popular flight simulator software. The combat simulator DCS World is now in third place, pushing Prepar3D into fourth place. Prepar3D by Lockheed Martin is now in collaboration with Unreal Engine to create next generation simulations, and we will keep monitoring the development. Real Pilots And/or Simmers? During the past five years conducting the survey we have found that on average 27.1% of the respondents hold some sort of pilot license. On average, 9.6% of these hold a Private Pilot License, or a PPL. So, 1 in 4 have some sort of license, and 1 in 10 has a PPL. Out of the rest, 8.5% of the respondents are enrolled in flight school. Among the ones that were not flight students 25% are still considering taking real-world lessons within the next year. The main purpose of using the simulator seems to be more about having fun. Only 6% state that they use the flight simulator for training towards a pilot license. The majority, 49%, say that they use the simulator out of curiosity or just a general interest in aviation. Residence of Simulator Pilots When comparing the latest United Nations world population numbers against the survey data, focusing on countries with more than 5million citizens, the result shows that there are the most flight simulator enthusiasts, per capita, in the following countries: Norway New Zealand Switzerland The Netherlands United Kingdom We would like to thank all of the partners who have contributed to this year's survey with questions and/or distribution of the survey: Aerosoft Airfoillabs BelGeode BRAVO737 Carenado Cruiselevel.de Delta Virtual Airlines Fenix Flight1 FlightGear FlightSim.com FlightSimulator.blog Fly By Wire FSElite FSA/FSExpo FSHub FSMagazin FSNews24 GeoFS Glass Cockpit HeliSimmer.com Honeycomb Infinite Flight IVAO Laminar Research MSFSAddons.com ORBX PilotEdge PMDG RealSimGear SimFlight SimWorks Studios The Flight Lounge TorqueSim Aircraft Development VATSIM What has been presented here is just scratching the surface of our full report, which has many more questions, diagrams, and comments. /images/notams/notams22/navi1125.jpgWe hit "a little snag" with our in-game panel for Microsoft FlightSimulator. Turns out that the vector tile technology we are using forNavigraph Charts 8 isn’t compatible with the rendering technology usedin the simulator. Even if we were able to render charts this way thenew charts would be a significant performance hit for the simulatorwhich in turn would make the frame rate drop. Not good. Therefore wehave worked intensively to find a solution and a way to shoehornNavigraph Charts into the simulator with preserved frame rate. And weseem to have succeeded! We have rasterized all the charts and set up aseparate pipeline for the In-Game Panel. Tests are positive - and wehope to release Navigraph Charts 8 for Microsoft Flight Simulatorwithin the next few days. The background story is that we got this information a little latein the development process and therefore had to leave the in-gamepanel on Charts 7. This was fine for some, but especially VR users whodo a lot of their prepping before they immerse in the HMD had theirworkflows disrupted. We also know that many VFR pilots were lookingforward to the new charts in the In-Game Panel. And now they arecoming! Just give us a minute while we prepare the last details! Thanks for your patience. /images/notams/notams22/navi1109.jpgNew Navigraph Charts Offers Worldwide VFR Coverage for Flight Simulators Navigraph is proud to announce the release of Navigraph Charts 8, asoftware solution for flight simulator pilots to view, search andorganize Jeppesen charts. The most notable feature additions in thenew version are worldwide VFR charts coverage, drag and drop rubberband route construction, seamless zoom down to gate level, and 3Dglobe projection. Following the initial release many more featuresawait such as weather layers, profile views, navlog, traffic, andannotations. Navigraph Charts 8 is available on a monthly subscriptionmodel for PC, Mac, Android, iOS, and most browsers; and is compatiblewith all popular flight simulators. With the vision of “being a part of every flight simulationexperience†Navigraph Charts 8 has been developed with emphasis ondelivering a seamless and intuitive experience, reducing the pilotworkload in all phases of the simulated flight. What’s New?Navigraph Charts 8 has been completely rewritten to accommodate anextensive roadmap of new features scheduled for release over the nextcouple of months. However, in this version, users will see thefollowing new features: Worldwide VFR ChartsDrag and Drop Route ConstructionSeamless Zoom3D Globe ProjectionAutopinning of Procedure ChartsAirport Crosswind and Weather InformationVector ChartsWorldwide VFR ChartsNavigraph Charts displays a worldwide interactive map with visualreporting points, entry and exit routes, traffic patterns, transitionroutes, and flyways. As selectable data layers Navigraph Charts alsodisplay coastlines, terrain, water bodies, roads, railroads, powerlines, windmills, churches, landmarks, obstacles, highpoints andwaterways. Airspaces are clearly marked, and so are populated areas,avoid-overflying zones and minimum off route altitudes (MORA). Drag and Drop Route ConstructionThe VFR Chart and IFR Enroute Chart are interactive. Therefore itonly makes sense that the route also can be adjusted interactively bysimply dragging it. The route will snap to known waypoints. Arbitrarywaypoints can be added by long pressing the route. The textual routestring updates accordingly to reflect the interactivechanges. Creating a route is now as intuitive as pulling a rubber bandacross waypoints. Each route segment displays distance andheading. The drag and drop route construction will be particularly usefulfor VFR pilots, but also works for IFR route construction. Just likebefore Navigraph Charts offers an extensive set of import and exportoptions, among which SimBrief is the most popular. The route stringscan also be copied and pasted textually. Last but not least, NavigraphCharts has an autoroute function which handles North Atlantic Tracksand the expanding Free Route Airspace. The drag and drop function willnot be available for Android and iOS devices in the initialrelease. Seamless ZoomIt is now possible to zoom all the way from space down to airportlevel and see terminal buildings, gates, stop lines, and even windsocklocations. A pixel at the greatest zoom is 1.5 meters at theequator. This feature will be particularly useful for pilots whiletaxiing. 3D Globe ProjectionEver since the Apollo 8 mission humans have been mesmerized by theview of our home as seen from space. Now you can do the same -Navigraph Charts on a globe projection is not only beautiful to lookat, but it also helps visualize Great Circle distances and polarroutes. Autopinning of Procedure ChartsWhen planning a flight, Navigraph Charts 8 can automatically placethe relevant airport diagrams and procedure charts in a pinboard whichcan be stored with the flight, or saved separately. This feature savesthe time and effort required to organize the charts needed for aflight for easy access as the pinboard always floats at the bottom ofthe interface. Airport Crosswind and Weather InformationWhen selecting a runway for takeoff or landing unfavorable windsare indicated with red arrows. Similar to a traffic light, runwayswith favorable winds are marked with green arrows. The airport windinformation is updated in real time together with current weather(METAR) and predicted conditions (TAF). Weather reports are colorencoded to denote flight categories permitted in Visual MeteorologicalConditions: VFR, MVFR, or IFR. Vector ChartsComing FeaturesScheduled to release in the coming months are the following features: Weather layers - winds, precipitation, cloud coverage, and more.Navlogs - to keep track of past flights, hours, and statisticsProfile views - phases of flight, level changes, terrainTraffic visualization - other popular networksCharts annotations - to take taxi instructions on the chartsnavigraph.com

/images/notams/notams22/navi0714.jpgAirac cycle 2207 has been released! If you want to practicecertain procedures or scenarios in MSFS, you’ll probably find aninstructor panel to be a useful tool. The FSI Panel is designed tomimic the typical instructor panels that airlines use fortraining. The tool has previously been available exclusively forPrepar3D, but is now also available for MSFS. Not only will it allowyou to place your aircraft at various positions from cruise to finalapproach with the click of a button, but it will also help you toevaluate your landing performance using its landing report. If you’re into practicing certain scenarios, you’ll most probablyfind the FSI Panel to be a useful addition to your MSFS even if you’reflying the smallest propeller aircraft, however, it’s perhaps when youpractice with FMC-equipped (Flight Management Computer) aircraftyou’ll find the FSI Panel to shine the most. Setting up an FMC overand over again in an airliner can be a cumbersome experience foranyone. The FSI Panel solves that problem by allowing you to easilyposition your aircraft from the panel in a matter of seconds, withouthaving to set up your FMC. Source

/images/notams/notams22/navi0325.jpgStaff Picks - LSGS Sion AirportLooking for a new challenging airport to fly to? When flying for aSwedish Private Jet Charter Company one of my favorite destinationswas Sion airport (LSGS) in the Swiss Alps, mainly because of thebeautiful scenery and thrilling High Performance Departure over themountains. Give it a try! My name is Emma and I work as Growth Manager here atNavigraph. Before I started at Navigraph I flew the Beechcraft KingAir 300 and 350 for a Swedish Private Jet Company based at NorrkA_pingairport (ESSP) in Sweden. During the winter season we regularly flewski tourists to Sion Airport, beautifully located in the SwissAlps. This was one of my favorite destinations due to the stunningapproach and the excitement of the steep takeoff over themountains. If you were lucky you could even squeeze in a day or two ofskiing before leaving for the next destination. The IFR approach and departure procedures are limited to flightcrew holding a special authorization issued by the authorities due tothe geographical situation of the Sion Airport that lies inmountainous terrain. IGS RWY 25Another interesting fact is that runway 25 uses an IGS (InstrumentGuidance System) approach. The difference from a regular ILS approachis that the IGS does not line you up to land, in this case for the IGSRWY 25 the Localizer is offset by 6.5 degrees to the right for terrainreasons, which means that you break off left at the minima andcontinue for a final visual approach. Worth mentioning is also thatthe descent starts at 17'000 ft at MASAB at 27.3 DME (DistanceMeasuring Equipment) from LOC ISI with a 6 degree glide path(!) due tothe high mountains on final. Want To Try It Out?If you want to try the High Performance Departure or IGS Approach, which is one of the most beautiful but also most challenging in IMC(Instrument Meteorological Conditions) in Europe, get your NavigraphUltimate subscription onwww.navigraph.comand start exploring!

/images/notams/notams22/navi0306.jpgDear Navigraph users, Navigraph has been following the developments following Russia'sinvasion of Ukraine very closely. We are shocked and appalled by theaggression, and the human tragedy it is causing. We are also deeply concerned for the safety and well-being ofNavigraph Team members in Ukraine, and are in continuous contact withthem. Under these circumstances, Navigraph is suspending services inRussia until further notice. No new accounts nor new subscriptionswill be accepted, and existing subscriptions will not be renewed. Thisis expected to take effect on March 7, 2022. For other customers, we are still assessing how the productoffering might be affected. Our IFR chart coverage always reflectsthat of Jeppesen. In our Charts app, routings over Russia and Ukrainewill still be suggested as long as the airway network is intact, andnot all countries and airlines are affected by the airspace ban inRussia. In SimBrief the suggested routes will depend on other usersplanning routes around Russia and Ukraine. So gradually routes thatavoid Russian airspace will be suggested but it might take sometime. /images/notams/notams21/navi1104.jpgCycle 2111 is out! Update your tools and add-on aircraft FMSdatabases using the FMS Data Manager, and using the Navigraph NavdataCenter for MSFS 2020 users. The current Jeppesen charts are alreadyavailable through the Navigraph Charts apps. Have you noticed that it seems like there are fewer and fewerairways in the European airspace? What’s going on and how does itaffect route planning in flight simulation? Read on and we will tellyou a bit about something called free route airspace (FRA). For many years, airlines have flown on pre-defined pathways calledairways. These airways can be seen as three-dimensional highways foraircraft. EUROCONTROL, an organisation dedicated to supporting Europeanaviation, has initiated the development and implementation of aconcept called free route airspace (FRA). The project has the aim ofovercoming the aviation sector’s efficiency, capacity andenvironmental problems. The free route airspace is a specified airspace in which a routecan be planned freely between a defined entry and exit point. Routesthat are planned within a FRA, will only be subject to a fewlimitations, such as fixed entry and exit points and avoiding anydanger areas. Flights remain subject to air traffic control withinfree route airspaces. By introducing the FRA, operators can plan routes more flexiblywithin an area that was previously subject to planning along airways, which typically resulted in a longer route than needed. The FRA implementation is a gradual process. Currently, threequarters of the European airspace now have free route airspaceprojects in place. Once the FRA implementation in Europe is complete,EUROCONTROL expects that the following savings have been made: 500,000 nautical miles per day10,000 fewer CO2 tonnes per day3,000 tonnes of fuel per day3 million euro in fuel cost savings per daySo what is Navigraph doing to reflect these new conditions? Asregions are moving from airways to free route airspaces, the NavigraphDevelopment Team continuously update the integrated route planner inthe Navigraph Charts apps to reflect these changes. As a result, routes in Europe will be planned with directs between waypoints to agreater extent than before. This allows for more optimized routeplanning using the Navigraph Charts apps - just like in the realworld. Source

/images/notams/notams21/navi1008.jpgAIRAC Cycle 2110 has landed! Make sure your navdata and charts areup to date! The Navigraph navdata team is working actively on developing thenavdata service to offer a realistic flight simulationexperience. Through customer reports in our support forum, we havebeen able to further enhance the realism when using current navdatafrom Navigraph by introducing real-world beam widths for localizers inMSFS 2020. A localizer is providing the lateral guidance of an instrumentlanding system (ILS). When following the localizer, combined with theglideslope that provides vertical guidance down to the runway, youwill be at the correct altitude and aligned with the centerline. From AIRAC Cycle 2110 and onwards, Navigraph updates the localizersin MSFS 2020 to reflect their real-world beam width values that are inthe primary range of 2 to 6 degrees, instead of the default simulatorvalue of 5 degrees.
