Looking for a very specific model of Boeing 707

In about 1983 (!), I purchased and built a polystyrene model of a then BOAC Boeing 707. It may have been an "Airfix" model. There are two specific features of it that I remember. It had the "double bubble" fuselage (ie, sort of peanut like cross section), and it had the cluster of exhaust pipes (I think 8) for each engine. Is such a model available for download? I am looking for a detailed static model (which I can make from a flying one using MCX) that I can paint in modern Qantas colours for a diorama.

I assume you mean the original QANTAS 707-138. Here's a picture of the original livery:

Model you built was very likely the 1/144 scale AIRFIX kit .... and which is a B707-420 version specifically .... similar to the -320, but, quite different from the -320B, -320B/SCD, -320B ADV, and -320C and each of the earlier series B707's too.

Have several of the said AIRFIX kit in captivity here (various releases of it) .... among several hundred other kits within "our stash" too.

 

MINICRAFT also released the B707 in 1/144 sale too .... in -320, -320B/ADV, -320C, and -420 form, but, so far as I'm aware these never became available until the 1990's.

 

Again your kit sounds likely to have been the AIRFIX release .... especially given you mention its BOAC (or BRITISH AIRWAYS) livery.

That was a basic characteristic of all B707 and DC-8 fuselages.

That was a characteristic of each of the turbojet powered B707's (from the -120 through -320 series .... and including the -420 .... as well as early B720 versions too, but, not in regard to "B" sufficed" fan-jet powered upgrades of both the -120, -138, and B720) and DC-8's .... though the type, and number of pipes (daisy petals) varied between P&W and RR type engines .... again the AIRFIX -420 kit fits this description perfectly.

 

Is such a model available for download?

 

"YES" .... there "is" .... if you're meaning for FS use.

Note you say "diorama" .... but .... if it's static AI you want, and for FS purposes only, then, not sure how the UI HJG models might impact things. Given PC and graphic resources are now far more powerful than when these models were conceived there should be any major problems though

Fully aware that all the 707s had the double bubble fuselage. What i meant was, not all of the models that I have downloaded so far have that.

 

The polystyrene model I had was yes, the Airfix 1/144 scale. It definitely was BOAC, with the dark blue livery with the gold "speedbird" on the tail. So definitely BOAC, not BA.

 

 

Impressed by your stash of plastic models. My most ambitious one was in about 1983 - a Qantas spacecraft (a la 2001 movie) out of an SR-71. Painting a black plastic model with white enamel is well and truly a pain in the tailfin.

 

I have used MCX to make countless static models from flyable ones, have never ever ever encountered any problems.

The double lobe of the B707 fuselage is probably a bit less distinct than is the case with the DC-8 .... and from memory it's probably a little exaggerated/over scale within the 1/144 AIRFIX B707-420 kit, but, is pretty well/better proportioned within the much more recent 1/144 scale MINICRAFT B707-320, -320B/C, and -420 kits.
