Preventing sim from pausing when other PC windows are opened.

you may be confusing CONFIRM ON EXIT with PAUSE ON TASK SWITCH. You can confirm that the "pause" setting is NOT CHECKED in "Settings/General" but also confirm the setting is actually set in the fsx.cfg file as

[user interface]

PAUSE_ON_LOST_FOCUS=0

I say this because, as best I know, FSX writes to the config file as the sim is shutting down properly - if you shut down with CONTROL + BREAK, the config file will not be updated and any changes will be lost.

If your config file is not being updated, then you would have to change it manually.

Hope this helps

Not sure whether we're singing from the same hymn sheet. What I'm looking to do is to run other programs, such as checking my emails, whilst the sim continues to run. However, I later found that the sim does, in fact, continue running when other progs are run in the background but the sound is muted.

Muted is correct. P3d has muted sound as an option, but you're stuck with it in FSX.

Flight1 have an add-on which fixes this: http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=soundstream

It's not compatible with FSX Steam though.
