A-1 Skyraider on an aircraft carrier not working

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody,

I got a freeware A-1 Skyraider from Tim Conrad and every time I try to land it on the carrier it just bounces over the wires on the deck, its getting really annoying since I come in almost perfectly every time.

Is there somthing missing in the aircraft.cfg, do I stink at flying the plane, or is there a tutorial somwhere?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Yes I do, Here is the link to the plane,http://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/5223/fsx-sp2-acceleration-douglas-1h-skyraider/, it said it can land on a carrier.

I just downloaded it and I think you're right, I can't make the hook snag the wires on the default FSX carrier anchored off the Golden Gate, is that the same carrier you're using?

But the good news is that we don't need no steenkin wires anyway if we put realistic wind speed over the deck, and stand on the brakes when landing..:)

Go to World>Weather>Customize and put heavy wind (36 kts) over the deck from 70 degrees-

I pop gear, full flaps, airbrake (key /), and hook (Shift+Q)..

..and the machine needs only half the deck to stop (remember to stand on the brakes), it came to a gradual stop so I don't think it caught the wires or it'd have stopped on a sixpence..

No, I am using ai carriers 2 and the USS Nimitz,http://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/2618/fsx-aircraft-carrier-uss-nimitz/. Very cool pics of the skyraider in Vietnam!

I have not been to the static ship out near San Francisco.

I am also using AI Carriers 2 and managed a wire catch but also nose planted for a crash! I have the exact same Piglet aircraft, but downloaded it from here in the Library. I then copied into my panel folder the [window.XX] for COP3 to be able to engage the wires and have the steam arresters do their duty! Will post a screenie, If I get lucky!

UPDATE: No luck catching the wires. made several good attemps but either face-planted using too much brakes or continued off the deck. I don't believe it is capable of TRAPS.

Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer!  ✈️

...the wires on the default FSX carrier anchored off the Golden Gate...

Kid,

for you being around here that long, I'd expected you to know that this particular carrier is a static scenery object. Has no working cables or cats .

The wires you see are just a texture. Great landing btw.

Skyraider_Launch.jpg

Even though there's no visual, this plane has a launch bar. Line it up so that the front wheels touches the sides of the red and white box then press Shift-I to raise the blast shield and Shift-J for the launch.

For the arrested landing with the tailhook, speed needs to be below 75 knots on touchdown for a stationary carrier. If speed is too high, nothing happens even if you touched down in the right area.

Nice plane for the toybox.

Yes mate, but I'm in the habit of checking everything out for myself with hands-on testing rather than rely on assorted hearsay, rumours and guesses.:)

The static Golden Gate carrier is simply a token no-frills platform included to allow people (usually newcomers) to practice landings and takeoff from, it basically just lies there without moving or making a sound like my ex-ladyfriend June.

But it does offer an interesting challenge because it's got no catapult or arrester wires, so it's fun trying different planes to see which are capable of operating from it, light aircraft do best of course, but I've failed miserably to land an F/A-18 on the angled deck. Even with a strong headwind, flaps and airbrake, and standing on the wheelbrakes.

I can't stop in time and roll into the drink (sniffle)

Just to remind newcomers, there are also several MOVING default carriers in FSX, check this thread about them-

https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?249165-fsx-acceleration-aircraft-carriers-aren-t-working&highlight=carriers

I've only tried the west coast USA carrier and landed Skyraiders and F/A-18's on it, to confirm it's arrester wires do work.

Here's my Skyraider coming in to land on it, I was aiming for the angled deck but botched it (the carrier was moving from under me, at least that's my excuse) but hopefully I can still catch a wire. I left the flaps up and the airbrake stowed for a fast 96kts landing to test the wires..

Piece o' cake, I wasn't braking and you can tell it's snagged ok because the tail lifts..

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-mov-carr3_zpsb11b1bf7.jpg~original

Then gently sinks back down as the plane stops. Note the prop didn't hit the deck..

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-mov-carr4_zps7366e02f.jpg~original

After a few seconds the invisible wire abstractly auto-detaches and you can slam open the throttle and take off again if you don't want to use the catapult. The 'raider climbs like a lift into a stiff headwind. especially as the carrier is already doing about 25 knots..

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/sub2/FSX-mov-carr5_zps3ae4f9bd.jpg~original

TIP- turn on the 'Thermals Schematic' display option so you'll be able to avoid their turbulence especially on critical final approach.

You can just see the faint spiral of one on the right of the above pic.

PS- the red/green/yellow readouts along the top of the screen are height/speed/heading (they're blurry in these shrunken screenshots but look fine on the monitor), I made them with help from the forum experts because they're easier to read than the small stock red datastrip

So that's what those spiral, faint clouds indicate?

COOL!

Now I can go fly gliders like I did back in the day! I wonder if there are any AI hawks will come out of the cliff faces to "play" with me...

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

The birds look like vultures and only appear in some thermals if you set the thermal option to 'Natural', check them out in this thread-

https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?248991-Birds-in-FSX

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/CMSF/FSX-bird4.gif

Thermals are about half a mile in diameter and rise thousands of feet, you can switch them on via Options>Settings>Display>Weather, and choose 'None', 'Natural' or 'Schematic'. (You'll only see them with Schematic, they look like giant coiled springs)

Check page 4 of this thread-

hornetdriver25,

You like documentation so here is my mods for the A-1H along with the 'original' cfg entries for comparison. It's been a while, but I can still enjoy landing this bird (and it's not a vulture). More like an red, white, and blue (kick arse) 'Eagle'. And you don't need no stinking wind or thermals. Cheesh.

Thanks!

So if I add the second line down to my A-1H aircraft cfg it will be able to snag the wires and launch off the front of the boat?

Hey Chuck! I just tried your [tailhook] mod on my Skyraider and lo and behold the tailhook will no longer extend. I put the original back in and it extends OK. Launch assist won't work for me because of a lack of Acceleration. I've now installed an Anchor and chain!;)

What did you lengthen your tail hook to?

Well, I figured the default 2 feet was way to short so I use the length from my S-2F of 8.428, which might be too long, but something kept me on the carrier after landing!

This is from

RCBco-30.zip: Carrier Operation Package for Military Jets #

# FSX ONLY #

# #

# By Rob Barendregt Release 3.0 25 feb. 2007 #

#

2. Tailhook definition.

-----------------------

If the Tailhook length is NOT correct:

- Open the aircraft.cfg of the aircraft, and find the section (just an example):

[TailHook]

tailhook_length=6.6

tailhook_position = -15.0, 0.0, -1.0 //-1.0 = lateral position of the tailhook

cable_force_adjust = 1.0

- Change the 3rd parameter of the _position= a bit, and try again.

Note that, after saving the aircraft.cfg and reloading the aircraft again, the fuel

level isn't changed, but FSX assigns the full payload again (as defined in the aircraft.cfg).

In this example:

- Changing -1.0 in -0.5 raises the Tailhook, so the % extension on the ground will increase.

- Changing -1.0 in -1.5 lowers the Tailhook, so the % extension on the ground will decrease.

I'll wager the Tailhook parameters and/or how to change them to a "proper" length are the same though.

You can see the main gear length by looking at the 4th parameter in the [contact_points] section, the point.2 or point.1 line. USUSALLY!

For planes with 2 nose gear tires (like the F-14, f-18, etc) sometimes the mains might be point.2 and point.3, depending on whether the two nose tires are given seperate lines or not.

I don't know if this will help anyone or not...I live by this stuff by Rob, though. He seems to know where-of he speaketh :D
