  1. I'm happy to see them being shared. For some real Beech 18 videos, search Youtube Bob Trinque Bob sold his C-45 but I had several breakfast flights in it and even got 30 min stick time. Flights from KPYM to KMVY or KACK for $45/seat
  2. RETURN TRIP FROM THE MEIGS RALLY Another terrible day with low ceilings as we pre-flighted the Beech 18 on the ramp at Meigs. Holding short R-18. Wind 074@13, 1500 overcast, temp/dewpoint 07/10 Wild crosswind, lower nose Climb 30 mp, 2300 rpm, 140 kts First waypoint, Gipper Niles Vortac. Interesting cloud layers, turn right 79 deg Still over MI, clouds breaking Divert to Lorain Co OH for fuel Depart Lorain Co Bradford Co, PA, very cloudy with occasional breaks High country in upstate NY Berkshire hills in Western MA BAF Westfield-Barnes Regional and ANG Base. F-15's are based here. They were moved from Otis on Cape Cod. CEF Westover ARB. C-5's are based here. KOWD Norwood Memorial 1st approach to R-17 Go-around to R-10 after checking the wind sock. R-10 high and hot but we squeaked it on anyway. OWD North Ramp. The ground crew has been instructed to tow the AC to a hanger with wider doors. That was a great experience for me who has participated in other rallys over the years. Glad to meet all my fellow pilots and looking forward to exploring more of our FS world.
  3. In journalism the ultimate put-down must be to have your name appear on a restaurant menu rather than on a byline from a respected news source. I was wondering where I had heard Tim B's name mentioned. Yes, several times on this thread but where else - the BBC? Reuters? hmmm.....I spent a sleepless night pondering this and finally deferred until tomorrow.
  4. I like that! Lets hope no housing developments or river-front condo's were torn down to build yet another airport!!!
  5. Also, in out virtual worlds, we may have personal, job-related or family reasons for starting at a point closer to the fly-in destination. We can invent any number of reasons to skip the 10-hr allnighters and still join the fly-in. Except in the case of tracking or score-keeping. I better keep my mouth shut until I have more experience with this club <G>.
  6. Why did FS choose Meigs as the default field? Bruce Artwick, Sublogic Corp, the author of the first version of FS was either a student or worked near Chicago.
  7. Oshkosh to Meigs in a Beech 18 - As my first post, with little time to develop a narrative, this is mostly a technical discussion of the flight. On the transient ramp at OSH with 5 passengers ready to taxi to runway 18. Wind 214 @ 7, visibility 6 miles in rain, clouds 1,900 scattered, 4,100 overcast, temp/dewpoint 9/10. Holding short OSH Runway 18. We decided to stay VFR below the clouds for a while and pick up our IFR clearance in the air so our passengers could take a few photos of the OSH area. Shallow climb on heading 150. Visibility ok up to 1,700 but we will need to go higher to clear Milwaukee airspace. Passing Lake Winnebago. One of those coves is where the OSH Seaplane Base is located during the July Fly-In Convention. Picked up our IFR clearance to 7,500. On top at 9,500. We requested higher, when we saw cloud tops at 6,500 but needed 9,500 to clear buildups. First waypoint West Bend Muni KETB, turn to heading 170. Passing Milwaukee MKE, home of Budweiser beer and Harley Davidson motorcycles. 55 miles to go. Started a 500 fpm descent to 1,700. MKE indication. Thank goodness for those MSFS 2020 labels - they take all the guesswork out of IFR navigation LOL. Winds reported 234 @ 18 at Kenosha KENW Wisconsin. Crossed border with Illinois. Level at 1,700 North of Chicago. Skyline coming into view. Canceled IFR. We're flying the Chicage VFR corridor 3,500 or below Twenty degrees right to correct for wind drift. Slow to approach speed 90 kts. Strong crosswind, our speed was too high and we floated halfway down the runway, the rudder control was marginal so we elected to go around. After this, while taking a screenshot, the view changed and was locked so we had to fly with forward view only. Second try, view has changed and not for the better. We ignored the standard advice to add 10 kts for wind and brought her in at minimun controllable airspeed MCA. The windsock was straight out. This time we rolled out with only 3 fishtails and still managed to (almost) stay on the runway. Taxiing to parking, relieved to be down safely. Little Nav Map showing approach with wind correction and one go-around at Meigs It's great to be back at Meigs where is all started, around 1984. I flew commercial to Chicago and walked through here before taking a bus to Oshkosh back in 2010. It was a shame to see the chain-link fencing and waste of a good airport.
  8. I landed Thursday in a Beech 18. Just a short flight from Oshkosh OSH. We had IFR conditions from 1700 to 9,000 and a crosswind at Meigs.
  9. In FSX I used a DC-6 from CalClassics, in FS2020 from PMDG and a 737-7 from PMDG, default Carbon Cub & TBM, Beech 18 & Bonanza from Carenado.
  10. Tom PenDragon wrote "Welcome Alan Pugh!! What's your home field; What's your favorite thing to fly; and if you have the time this week, fancy a run to Meigs?" Home field is 1B9 Mansfield Muni but I also use KOWD Norwood Memorial I have been flying a DC-6 and 737-700 but also like Cubs, TBM, Bonanza V35 and Beech 18 Melo has invited me to the Meigs Rally and I'm in.
  11. Good job, Melo! This is a test reply, my first time posting. Hello to Kit, it's been over 20 years since we last flew together with Lee James and Mike "Greenie" Greenwood. Alan
