  1. Fantastic pics!

At Catalina, don't land short, or roll too long after landing. It is a great airport to visit.

Closet experience one can have in real world aviation to  landing on a carrier (I'm old enough to talk wood deck and props - T-28C and USS Lexington).

You're probably not going to like this ... , but I would suggest reducing your graphics settings.

Tiger, This is sage advice to all of us no matter what computer or which FS version we use.

I'd love to have the sliders at max for everything, but have made appropriate compromises so that I get enough of the eye candy I want, while keeping FPS reasonably high.

Personally, except of screenshots, the reality of the flight characteristics take precedence above all.

I totally need to buy more popcorn at Sams Club. I feel like I'm in the middle of a town hall debate of diatribe nonsense. 🙄

I could swear I just heard the announcer yell "Let's get ready to rumble!!!!"

  4. There is a individual forum for screenshots for MSFS 2020, X-Plane, and Prepar 3D, but NOT for FSX.

Could a forum be made for FSX Screenshots?

Where do the FSX flyers post screenshots? I have been posting them directly from my profile.

Maybe I'm just not seeing something.

    Thoughts? and Thanks.

  5. My real tailwheel time is limited to the J-3 Cub and Cessna 170.

Definitely NOT a trike. But the 1942 J-3 gave me some of my most memorable flying experiences.

Wondering if the C-117 the Corps flew, with the even larger barn door rudder flew much differently than the earlier DC-3s.

    Happy Simming.

  6. You got me interested to see the handling qualities of the FSX DC-3. I have never flown the aircraft before, so I took off from Iwojima (RJAW) and flew a 1.2 hour flight by dead reckoning to Chichijima (RJCI). Ground handling was stable during a slow paced taxi for takeoff. Takeoff roll and climb out were without any surprises, and the aircraft was trimmed to nearly hands off level flight. Flap extension showed significant but trimmable nose up. Lowering the gear definitely slowed the aircraft.  Hardest part was flying just above VSo (gear down stall speed) since Chichijima's dirt runway is only 2300 feet long. Throttles were reduced at about 100 ft before touch down, with immediate brakes on landing. I "may" have trimmed some palm trees at the far end of the field with my props, but no one saw me, and I deny everything! This is a fun aircraft to fly, and I look forward to flying this with increasing realism settings.

  7. Some FSX aircraft have RadAlts (radar altimeters) for displaying the aircraft height AGL.

I am looking to add a stand alone window to display only the RadAlt when I need it, similar to the magnetic compass window/view.

Is this created similar to a 2D cockpit (bmp + alpha + gauge) or by a different method?

    Thanks in advance.

Is it me or is this thing so hard to control it's like flying something with relaxed static stability! Yes! I have made sure my CG is within parameters.

Which flight sim version are you using, and which DC-3 model? I can only comment of FSX version. Thx

So Forums is where I find the latest news? For example, lets just say the newest FS Traffic program gets released for MSFS. Where would I see the news article that it has been released with a short write up....like we always saw on the front page of the old site?

Good question, something to ask the admins here. I don't focus on payware so I don't find this an issue.

As speed gets over Mach 0.9, drag increases enormously. Shock waves will begin to build on some parts of the aircraft. This can result in severe buffeting that could damage the aircraft. Read about Convair's experience in this Mach zone. If you  are getting overspeed on descent, begin  your descent farther from the airport, so that you can maintain a controlled rate of descent.

Excellent advice. Planning your approach well in advance of an arrival is key to a safe and stress free cockpit.

Sim aircraft do not model well the real world dynamics of near/trans-Mach airflow, other than some buffeting a speed warnings.

What many are not aware of is the high speed considerations of rotorcraft. The two most common issues are the advancing blade acceding Mach (the LOUD popping sound of a Huey in a tight higher G turn), and retreating blade stall. Think of the speed of the rotor tip as it turns on the ground, and then add forward airspeed. You can easily reach Mach at the blade tip with high speeds or increased loads. As the rotorcraft approaches VNE (speed never exceed) the retreating blade, since it is moving away from the airflow, can stall (remember a rotor blade IS an airfoil). This generates buffet, immediate loss of lift, and for single rotor aircraft a rapid roll into the stalled side.

So much going on out there that we can't see. And remember, flying takes skill, hovering takes finesse.

    Happy simming!

I saw a post in the FSX forum by a "Guest"??  Non members are allowed to post?  Also not seeing a "Report" button to report suspect posts!

Good points zippy, especially on the report button. Keeping the forums focused and helpful is best.
