  1. Nope, no special edition. MS slapped that name on one of their updates a few months ago.
  2. Question 1: Yes and yes. I have the charts on a 2nd monitor. If you display the airport diagrams you'll see your aircraft as a red arrowhead on the chart and it will show you your precise location on the airport as you taxi. Same with inflight, you can track your progress along your route. Question 2: Not sure I understand this question but you can plan your route with Navigraph or Simbrief and import your route into the sim.
  3. Portland to San Francisco Bay - literally. I was flying the PMDG 737 tutorial and all was fine, about a mile from 28R touchdown, lined up on the ILS and auto land was flying. Suddenly it started descending well below glidepath and turning to the right. Before I could get the autopilot shutdown and take over manually we hit the water. Tomorrow is another day.
  4. I think you'll find World Update IX in the MS Store, not the Content Manager.
  5. I didn't realize that MB was Gen 3. You're correct, the 980 would transfer data at the same speed as a 3rd gen.
  6. If you've got the MSI Z490 Gaming Edge motherboard it already has a heatsink for the M2 SSD's. Get yourself a Samsung 980 Pro nvme. I've got a 1T that I use solely for MSFS.
  7. Depending on the aircraft, he *could* put it on autopilot and step away for a little while. I've read of simmers doing transoceanic flights, step away for several hours then come back to it. But, there's no telling if something could need attention while he's away and things go haywire. Dad, my advice is stop calling it a *game*, get it in your head that it's a *simulation* and let him go. You could have a future Delta captain sitting there. If he really wants to get serious about it I can give you links to several publications on the FAA web site. It is all pertinent to any flight simulator and will allow him to self-study. Just let me know. As FYI, I'm a private pilot in real life.
  8. It's happened to me quite often. I guess eye candy is more important to MS/Asobo than fixing what's broke. I know ATC is a sticky subject but this particular issue popped up after one of the past updates, it wasn't always like this.
  9. @floundy is on to it. At and above 18,000' (FL 180) the altimeter needs to be set to 29.92 Hg. When descending below FL 180 reset it to the actual barometric pressure.
  10. Usually the Working Title CJ4 when doing anything over a couple hundred miles. Shorter stuff the TBM930. Every now and then I'll just do local stuff in the 172 or Bonanza. A couple weeks ago I purchased and am just now trying to digest the Aerosoft CRJ
  11. Another big thanks to the poster that said to download and launch the "XBox App" from the store. That did the trick. I'm now at version 1.19.8.0 and the Installation Manager is now doing its thing with 2+ Gigs. Updating this app is really a pain in the backside. That comes from somebody who recently retired from 35 years in corporate software development.
  12. Especially you XBoxers that haven't yet been through an update. enjoy the sim tonight cuz tomorrow after the update things will start to break. We have yet to go through a clean update, be it a World or Sim update.
  13. I haven't flown those aircraft but I had the same problem with the WT CJ4 In short, the last update broke Toggle Spoilers. Extend Spoiler and Retract Spoiler still work so I had to map a separate button on my stick to each function.
  14. Thought I’d fly the WT CJ4 from KPHF to KISP (Newport News, Va > Islip, NY) to see if I could land in Henri. ILS Runway 24, had the approach lights in sight at 300’. Disengaged AP at 200’ and things went to hell in a handbasket from there. Lost visual and crashed on the airport. My dog Rose (Dog is My Copilot :D) and I walked away with nary a scratch.
  15. I've experienced it several times. It happens to me if I mouse click an ATC response. Afterwards the focus is still in the ATC window. A mouse click anywhere else in the cockpit would resolve it.
  16. Maybe you gave me a ride or 2 when I was in the 82nd and then the 160th. :) That was many, many moons ago.
  17. Have you tried differential braking? It's not mapped by default but you can map the left and right brakes to joystick buttons or keyboard keys. I have a Thrustmaster TWCS throttle and mapped the paddles to the individual left/right brakes. I haven't flown the 747 but it works for me on other aircraft; the CJ4 and King Air are a couple where I needed additional oomph when turning at times.
  18. Same happened to me. I fired up the sim today fully expecting it to do an update but nothing happened. I checked the version and it was already at 1.15.8.0.
  19. At one time they were. When I learned how to fly you could pick up a J-3 Cub, Taylorcraft BC-12D or Aeronca Champ to build up hours with for 600 bucks. 'Course that was back in 1965. :)
  20. I was flying out there last week and experienced the same stutters and frame rate drops as the OP around Los Angeles. Very noticible taking off out of John Wayne Airport and for awhile headed north out of there. System is a Ryzen 5900X CPU, RTX 3080 GPU, 32 G of DDR4 3200 Mh RAM, Samsung® 970 Pro PCIe 3.0 SSD, 100 Mbs internet connection. Internet has consistantly good performance. Like Dave68 said a couple messages up I believe its remnants of the performance issues Asobo introduced with the last big updates that weren't fixed with the hot fix they released.
  21. As for tutorials, go to YouTube and search for a guy that goes by the name "Squirrel". He's got a lot of videos including a series of about half a dozen really good tutorial video's that will get ya started. Also, don't overlook the MSFS tutorials. They're a bit rudimentary and leave much to be desired but they will help. I've got the Extreme 3D Pro joystick and for the most part the default mapping has worked well for me. That controller does feel a bit stiff but over time you'll get used to it. If I can ever find them available I'd like to get a Logitech X56 but the 3D Pro is working fine for now. I've had it since FSX came out, over 10 years. If you're having a hard time with directional control, for now just go into the Assistance menu (I think that's the name) and turn on rudder assist.
  22. Did you turn on the Yaw Dampener? It needs to be on when using the autopilot. Switch labelled YD to the right of the AP switch.
  23. I'm an old (literally) retired IT guy and have built my own systems but not recently so I'm no expert on the current hardware. That said... I've heard that not all thermal pastes are created equal, some are better than others. Maybe somebody more experienced could weigh in with some advice on any specific brand that you should get.
