  1. I've looked at Editvoicepack website and not sure I'll use it. (Do you have to be online to use it?)

I'm not the most tech savvy 😀. I'll see if turning down the voice sounds satisfies my wants.

Ill88p- Thanks for that. I am aware of why ATC is there😀. It's just that FSX ATC is somewhat dictatorial at times. As I explained, I found that I was descending to satisfy requirements that you explain, but I had not been able to ask for permission to descend , I couldn't get back to ATC to ask for permission, and I was getting incessant demands to climb back to 15000.

So, let's say I am at 21000 ft and I decide to descend at the rate you say. I ask ATC before permision to descend, and that can be at a max of 10000 , yes?.

If granted, then are you saying that FSX ATC will accommodate that descent rate , and will not give me conflicting instructions? That when I get to 11000 ft the ATC will fall in with what I'm doing (to get me to just prior to glideslope heading instruction ) at MY rate of descent of 700ft, ?

(Note- Zippy above says that I may not be able to ask again for a altitude reduction)

I'm thankful for your calculation examples and I will look forward to using them in my next few flights.

where I will await with interest what default ATC does😉

BTW, anyone. Is there a way, within FSX , where I can edit the default ATC, using a config or something.

    Like, eliminating certain instructions.

  2. Thank you very much gentlemen. This is enlightening stuff. It seems to boil down, to deciding the point of start of descent as Toucanair describes, and then, for me, tom ignore the altitude requirements of ATC until just before Glideslope.

I had wondered if there was a way to "shut up" the ATC from nagging me, and Johnhinson statement re Editvoicepack is a revalation. To the point that I don't have a clue what it is , wherebto find it or how to use it😀

I'd like to try it out. Where can I find out how to do that?

Is it an edit for all the planes' ATC, or is it done on an individual plane basis.( I'd like to keep the ATC as is for my jets)

once again, thanks to all for taking the time to help me- clearly you have spent some time on your not very short posts. It is appreciated.

    .

  3. Total control over ALL propliners in my library.

How do you NOT control descent..?

Re your first sentence - " congratulations!"

Re the second. I thought it seemed apparent that I was referring to controlling the descent in accordance with ATC instruction AND the correct rate of descending a propliner

That difficulty I was finding was the whole point of the post. Perhaps you speed read and didn't grasp that.

Anyway, my reply to Zippy should explain it.

Perhaps you could tell me if

    a) you use default ATC,

    B) and if you do, exactly how do you not have the problem I am having.?.

  4. If you ever look at your ATC menu when flying, the bottom 2 lines are request altitude change either higher or lower, then if selected, how many thousands of feet change. When you request a change, ATC will normally grant the change and remember it. That will be your new altitude from then on.

Thank you zippy. Yes, when I tried a flight I realised that that was what I could do.And so I did.

I requested a reduced altitude, it was granted , and so I thought, cracked it.

However, Sod's law. After an ATC instruction, the screen I had left on ATC was not one where I could choose to ask for an altitude change! All I had the choice of was to ask for a change in destination, or a change in something else (can't recall) or cancel IFR.

So I decided to ignore the ATC when they kept telling me to climb to 15000( I was descending at 700ft/min) until I got a heading instruction.I obeyed that and continued, hoping I would get the change of altitude options up.

That didn't happen, so I continued my descent!.(with incessant climb to 15000! instruction!)

The good news was that near the end when I was low, I then got an instruction to descend to 1500 together with heading direction just prior to hitting the glide slope beam.

So, I made a proper glideslope landing.

It seemed throughout the major part of the descent that I couldn't do anything to get back to the ATC texts giving me options to increase or reduce altitude.

Is there something I could have done?

    Cheers

  5. Hello

For some years I have very much enjoyed David Maltby's Comet4b. I have decided to have a go at starting from cold and dark, but I cannot find any step by step instructions on how to do this.

I have looked at the Comets files in the shared files folder of FSX but though it has tips on flying etc there isn't any on C and D start.

Does anyone know where I can find how to start this wonderful Comet please.?

    TIA

  6. Thank you all for your inputs and assistance. I have followed them with interest. As to the FSX ATC,

I'm not so sure that it will allow me to choose a slow descent rate. Ordinarily, I do not begin the descent until told to do so. Were I to begin earlier(without being instructed), I suspect that ATC would instruct me to return to my instructed altitude..?

Let me quickly explain how I fly the jetliners. I take off and under ATC instruction, fly to cruise altitude.

Rather than fly in real time(say to USA),I take a shortcut. I go to World-MAP and then move the airplane icon to near where descent will be instructed, then I return to the flight, go to ATC and ask to resume flight plan to destination. Soon the descent instructions begin, and normally all goes well.

I will try to adapt this procedure to see if I can do this OK whilst accommodating a slow propliner descent, but I have some misgivings whether that will work.

    We'll see😀

  7. Hello

I have recently taken to flying propliners , from jetliners, and I use instrument flight rules.

As you know, in fsx, the default ATC instructs when and to what height to descend to at which heading etc- until finally putting you on the glideslope.

Typically in a jet, the descent rate is about 2000 ft per min.

I am concerned that if I descend in a propliner at (the recommended) 700 ft per min, that the fsx ATC will not be able to "handle" that and I will miss the glideslope.

Even now, in the jet, sometimes the ATC tells me "to expedite my descent to xxxxft" In other words, hurry up!

I am a bit wary that the default ATC is sophisticated enough to sus that I am flying a propliner and therefore they will instruct the descent to begin earlier to allow for the shallower descent rate.

Has anyone found any problems approaching with default ATC , as described above? Or any advice or tips for a new propliner pilot😀

    Thanks

  8. Hello

I am enjoying flying the JBK DC6, having just started on propliners.

I have downloaded the Diego Barreto sounds from the library here to install in the DC6.

I have extracted the files from the zip and I have a folder with sound files in it and a sound confg .

I have looked in the JBK DC6 folder but I do not see where to put the extracted files.

Can anyone tell me how to do it please?

    TIA

Edit- I have done this before ( some while ago😀),which is why I expected to see some sound files in the DC6 folder, but I only found the config file. However opening that, I see that it instructs to alias the DC3 sounds.

    I see a light!

So, do I change the DC 3 folder sound files for the new files, or do I put the downloaded sound files in the DC6 sound folder and change the config file alias instruction?

If I do the latter, do I change the instruction just by deleting the line?

I'll make backups of both planes sound folders before doing anything,

But would appreciate advice as to which way to do it.

  9. Glad you are getting on OK.

In the real world you have three or four position mixture levers which are not reproduced on the models, although they can be represented by add-on panel gauges. These would be used at Auto-Rich and Auto-Lean positions in flight, you use Auto Rich on climb and also on finals (in case of going-around) but otherwise you have the choice of doing as you are, or using Microsoft's automatic mixture option which can be set tow ways. Change for all aircraft in Settings or by inidvidual aircraft with a simple setting change in the aircraft's aircraft.cfg file. Under [piston_engine] look for fuel_air_auto_mixture=0 and change it to fuel_air_auto_mixture=1. Running fully auto is the method recommended at California Classic.

If you fancy a 15 hour flight (OK, I'm joking) you could do worse than watch this video on YouTube, search for "Why is this vintage airplane full of Dogs and going to Norway?" And yes, that DC-6 really did fly non-stop for 15 hours just a few days ago! Wow . . .

    Best regards,

    John

    PS:

Inuss - I meant more power than you were referring to. I could say read my post properly too but . . .

    :)

Thank you John. I had a go with non auto mixture and it was ok. However, I "lost" an engine (4) doing that because it seems I lean d it too much on the levers and it shut down!

    However, I did land Ok😀

Btw two things, does the DC6 have airbrakes( you can see I've com from jet airliners😀)

And where can I get some good sounds for the engines for the db6 for FSX running on XP

    Thanks again

  10. Thank you very much gents, This has helped a lot. After posting I did some (more) digging and found enough to make things reasonably clear.

I have since flown a couple of times using the DC6 pilot notes where there are recommended settings for climb and cruise.

However, what isn't mentioned is the zmixture settings. There are mixture levers , one for each engine, which at default I presume are "rich".

Am I right in thinking that as I climb then I move the levers in increments to "lean" the mixture, or are they left alone, or how are they used exactly. I have leaned them but not by a terrific amount and I haven't seen much difference in engine performance, i.e. It doesn't climb easier with mixture leaning.

I'll visit the recommended sites for more reading.

    Thanks again

  11. Gentlemen,

I have started flying the DC6. Reading the polit notes it talks of selecting, e.g. 33 inches of MAP......etc.

This is what I am having difficulty doing, as I don't fully understand.

Am I right in thinking MAP means mixture and pitch?

In the cockpit I see the green pitch levers, and I see ( lower down) some red mixture levers?

I can move each of these, of course, but how that gives me 33 inches of MAP or 36 inches of MAP etc, I do not know.

I see the rpm decreases etc on the engine dials, but don't fully understand the other dials.

What should I look for as I change these pitch and mixture settings as the flight progresses.

. Sorry if it's basic, but I feel so near to being able to fly this plane, but am stuck. Acronyms aren't my strong point😀

    Thank you

  12. Hello. I Am getting the hang of the airbus, but when on autopilot I go to dial in the frequency on Nav( for the glideslope activation) which is a two tier dial knob. The top part tunes the decimal points . That works ok.

But the bottom tier will not accept the "mouse" for me to alter the digits for the whole numbers, I.e the three on the left of the decimal point.

Is this a bug or is there something I am not doing right.

Of course, until I can input the Nav frequency I cannot land in autopilot because I cannot obtain the glideslope!

This is the Project A320 freeware

    Thanks

  13. To expand a bit on what Mr. Zippy said, a pitot tube (receives ram air pressure to drive the airspeed indicator) can ice up, especially when there's a lot of moisture in the air and it's cold outside. And that's what the pitot heat is designed to deal with. So if there are clouds and it's cold, you'll want it on. And if you're going to jet altitudes you'll want it on anytime.

Thanks for this. I am not specifically aware that I am doing that. However I get a "ice" light come on and I've found some switches or buttons , depending on model , that when I activate them the "ice " light goes out.

    Is that it?

If not where can I find out what the switch is please.

  14. Hello. I fly 737 and 747 and David Maltby Comet and Trident.

I fly IFR and use auto pilot soon after take off.

All is fine sometimes, but often as not the speed indicator will suddenly return to zero, not long into the flight, and I have to kill auto throttle and fly manually.

However I still have no idea what my speed is. unless I am using FS Commander, an add on linked to fsx , and that shows some data including indicated air speed. I rely on that

Funny thing is, when I am making the descent the speed indicator in the aircraft panel comes back on and stays on for the landing!

It's as though I might be at the computers power limit, and something has to give, so the speed dial stops working?

Is it a fsx problem or a computer power problem do you think.

I've checked. " failures" and I've got nothing set there to fail.

In confg file I see there is a true/false option for indicated air speed. I had it set at false. Is that relevant do you think?

    Thanks

  15. hello

I am trying to fly the New Zealand A320 airbus. I am using the VC cockpit. The Readme tells me that the TOGA can be switched on in the 2d cockpit and it shows me where it is. However, the VC cockpit does not have that switch. The readme goes on to say that I can map a command to usethe switch.

But I cannot find what the keyboard command is for the switch.

Can anyone advise me what this is please.

    Thanks
