Same price for 6700K and 9400, which one to get?

Hello. I've been planning to upgrade my system with a limited budget of $140. I can either get the I7 6700K or I5 9400 both with motherboards for $140.

I have 32GB 3200 of DDR4 and my old but decent RX580 8GB waiting to switch over. I'm currently using an old I5 4570.

I've read many, many times how the I7 is great in flight sims, but all the videos I've seen with comparisons, the I5 gets about 10fps higher. Although none of the videos or websites I've seen actually compare them in MSFS.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

From reading the specs, the i5 uses less power (65w vs 95w) has more cores (6 vs 4) and FS is programmed to be able to take advantage of more cores; the I5 runs memory a little faster. But I don't think you would be able to notice the speed difference even if you had them side by side.

 

So the one that uses less power wins out in my opinion.

 

The FPS is dependent on the graphics card, not the CPU unless there is a drastic difference in CPU throughput.

 

Re: I7 runs FS well: sure if you have an i7-10700K.

That's not a fair comparison, on the lower end they can go either way too.

Great, I'll try to get the 9400 if it's still available. The older i7 has 4 cores, but 8 threads so I didn't know if the increase in threads would outperform the 6 cores/6 threads on the i5. Thanks jimbo.

I'm obviously not trying to do anything spectacular with the visuals, 1080p and medium detail is my goal.
