betelgeuse
I've a W7 x64bit PC running FSX Gold on a separate HDD from the OS. (PC is i7-3770K 3.7GHz, 8GB DDR3, loads of disk space, GTX770 4GB). I am thinking of buying FSX-SE in the expectation from reports that it will run smoother and with fewer blurries and stutters than the box version. If I do this, will I be able to just install it and run my existing 3rd party addons such as ORBX, PMDG, A2S, etc without having to reinstall these? Some of the addons are on the same HDD as FSX, but some are on another HDD. In my Scenery Library, I have links to files on both drives. Addon aircraft are installed in the .../SimObjects/Airplanes folder. Or, should I just reinstall everything (this will take weeks and I am running short of time, 72years!). Thanks! http://ivao.websafe.dk/img/promo/promo_sm.jpghttp://status.ivao.aero/R/317780.png John
llivaudais
short of time? Oh, hell no! I'm a year older and I'm not conceding anything until it smacks me in the face. So... FSX-SE is a NEW simulator. Each addon with an installer will have to be installed anew. I don't have any you mentioned except Orbx and the newest versions will all recognize your SE install and install correctly. In case of doubt, download the newest versions. You should visit the website for all the other addons you have in order to find out if a newer/updated installer is required. All recent installers should be SE aware but you must check each one to be sure. Scenery that is manually installed is simpler - you can probably just point your SE scenery config to the location of your current install and share the same files. I have Acceleration, SE, P34v2.5 and P3Dv3.3 and they all share the same traffic, custom airports, photoscenery, and terrain mesh files. Take whatever time you need to be comfortable with the 'updates'. It'll still be faster than doing it over because you were in too big a hurry :) Loyd Hooked since FS4... now flying: self-built i7-4790 at 4 GHz; GA-Z97X mobo; GTX 970; 16GB gskill; quiet, fast and cool running. betelgeuse
Thanks, Loyd! I guessed I'd have to reinstall most things. I'm in a bind though because I am running a 6 year old PC (i7-3770K,, GTX770) and am undecided whether to scavenge what I can from it (SSD, HDD, PS) and buy new mobo, CPU, GPU. Then install FSX-SE. Your spec is a couple of grades up on mine. Probably, I will do a modest upgrade of mobo and CPU and stick with FSX as is on the old PC. Old favourites are hard to part with! I have X-Plane on another PC which has a much better spec. I was thinking of installing Prepare3D v5 on it when it becomes available. Thanks again. http://ivao.websafe.dk/img/promo/promo_sm.jpghttp://status.ivao.aero/R/317780.png John
lesh
betelgeuse, if you leave the boxed version of FSX installed there's the potential for new add-ons not installing correctly for FSX:SE because the Steam Edition then creates non-standard FSX registry entries. If you're doing a clean-install of your add-ons anyway, I would highly recommend removing the boxed edition completely to guarantee that things will go where you want them to. betelgeuse
Hmm..thanks, that's something I needed to know. I wish it wasn't true though. Since I posted I bought a secondhand socket 1155 mobo to replace the faulty Gigabyte (IMO it is faulty when its BIOS cannot be accessed). I also bought a better rated cooling fan (I ran stress tests and whilst the peak was 78C on any core, that's too hot for my liking at default clock 3.7GHz). I plan to do a modest o/c to 4GHz or 4.2Ghz - I know Ivy-Bridge CPUs (i7-3770K) get very hot. In view of your advice, when I've done the rebuild, I will start by running FSX as installed and see how it goes. If it still blurs and stutters, I will uninstall FSX boxed, and install the Steam version. http://ivao.websafe.dk/img/promo/promo_sm.jpghttp://status.ivao.aero/R/317780.png John
il88pp
You said you can't access the bios. That could well be fixable. What exact mainboard model is that? Are you using Win10? Oh yes, also, when you try to access bios on startup (by pressing DEL.) what does happen. Simply boots into Windows? Or do you get some error message? Let me know all that and I'll have a look. betelgeuse
Thanks, Top Gun, but I've struggled with the BIOS on this mobo for 6 years. I have contacted Gigabyte, I have been on umpteen forums for advice. There is a known problem with this board (Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H) and nothing, I repeat nothing, will induce it to reveal its BIOS settings. I am grateful for your offer of help about this but please don't! I'm finished with this board and have bought a secondhand socket 1155 board. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/321152-30-solved-gigabyte-z77x-ud3h-past-splash-screen-bios http://ivao.websafe.dk/img/promo/promo_sm.jpghttp://status.ivao.aero/R/317780.png John
il88pp
I don't want to let in that easily!:D I have a Z77-X-d3h myself (built my own pc) so I may be in a good position to help out. Can you still get to the "boot options" screen? (press F12 for boot from Usb and such I mean) also, what do you think caused the issue. Bad bios flash? Hardware change? Or did it start while overclocking perhaps? Did you try a jumper reset? I'll take a look at the differences between your mainboard and mine. If I remember correctly yours had built in Wifi, not sure what else. Will look it up in a few hours. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
betelgeuse
Will look it up in a few hours. No!! Please do not!! I am taking out the board today and will be trashing it. Mod, please consider closing this thread. http://ivao.websafe.dk/img/promo/promo_sm.jpghttp://status.ivao.aero/R/317780.png John
il88pp
Ok. If you later want to revive the mainboard you can always start a new thread.:) il. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
BigT-65
I am running FSX-SE and have been for several years now. I originally switched because I was having a lot of problems with the boxed version, particularly FSX crashes. You can look at my system specs in my signature to see what I have in my computer. I still get occasional stutters and blurries probably because I pretty much have everything maxed out and running a lot of ORBX scenery and fly mainly complex A2A and VRS aircraft. But in all I am very happy with my switch to the SE version. I have not had an FSX crash since I switched. i7 8700K CPU @ 4.8 GHz, 32 GB DDR4 3000 memory, Gigabyte Aorus Z370 MB, EVGA RTX 2060 Super XC GPU 8GB GDDR6 Memory, MasterAir MA610P CPU cooler, 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD, 500 GB SSD, 2T HDD, 3 Asus 24" monitors, Saitek X56 Rhino HOTAS.[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
