During the 1960's it was used to be called RAF Khormaksar and it was the biggest British Air Base in the Middle East! From 1967 untill 1990 was the hub of Alyemda Democratic Airlines and the main airport of the-then capital city Aden, of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen). After the unification of North Yemen with the South Yemen in 1990, the airport continued to be an International Airport serving important destinations in the region.
