About This File

This is a completely updated and revamped package of Abacus Publishing's "Battle For Midway" add-on for Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2.

There were *NUMEROUS* mission bugs and typographical errors contained throughout the entire package. Some of the bugs and errors were so severe that some of the missions would completely crash and lock up the simulator, or they could not even be completed (especially in the Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 version, which was simply a conversion of the missions by Abacus Publishing of their Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 1 missions).

This edited and repackaged version of Battle For Midway for Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 fixes all of that! All of the mission bugs and typographical errors have been corrected and fixed, and all of the converted Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 1 aircraft in the missions that were included with the Abacus Publishing package have been substituted with similar stock aircraft that ship with Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2.

Overview
--------
Thank you for installing Battle For Midway for Microsoft Combat Flight
Simulator 2! The original "Battle For Midway" package was created by Abacus
Publishing for Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 1 and Microsoft Combat Flight
Simulator 2.

There were *NUMEROUS* mission bugs and typographical errors contained
throughout the entire package. Some of the bugs and errors were so severe that
some of the missions would completely crash and lock up the simulator, or they
could not even be completed (especially in the Microsoft Combat Flight
Simulator 2 version, which was simply a conversion of the missions by Abacus
Publishing of their Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 1 missions).

Also, Abacus Publishing's Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 version included
original Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 1 aircraft designed by Abacus
Publishing that were converted to Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 format
for the package. These converted aircraft were quite poor looking (and lacking
features) due to the nature of the conversions.

This edited and repackaged version of Battle For Midway for Microsoft Combat
Flight Simulator 2 fixes all of that! All of the mission bugs and typographical
errors have been corrected and fixed, and all of the converted Microsoft Combat
Flight Simulator 1 aircraft in the missions that were included with the Abacus
Publishing package have been substituted with similar stock aircraft that ship
with Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2.

Note that the original Abacus Publishing aircraft have also been included in
this package (with minor bug fixes and edits), although they are not actually
used in the edited missions in this package.

Also, two campaigns have been created and included in the package, as Abacus
Publishing's Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 version did NOT include
campaigns... they ONLY included campaigns for their Microsoft Combat Flight
Simulator 1 version (really STRANGE).

The campaigns and missions also include generic stock cutscene movies that ship
with Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 ("Opening" and "Success" cutscene
movies), a new additional printable splash screen and real-world historical map
of the battles ("BFM.png" and "BFM_Map.png"), as well as resized "JPG" format
versions of the images that are used for the missions' reconnaissance photos
("Recon_BFM_1.jpg" and "Recon_BFM_2.jpg").

The missions have also been edited to add a little bit of weather (some light
medium-altitude clouds, and a temperature layer).

Lastly, the orignal Abacus Publishing Battle For Midway manual has been scanned
and included in this package ("BFM_Manual.pdf"), as well as this HEAVILY edited
readme ("BFM_Readme.txt").

Introduction
------------
The backdrop for the Battle For Midway are some very enchanting islands of the
Pacific. It is ironic that such lovely scenery should be the setting for some
of the most devastating and destructive fights of the entire World War II. You
will fly some of the famous planes from this era as we recreate the Japanese
and United States missions from the great sea and air battles of the Coral Sea
and Midway Atoll.

Installation
------------
To install, simply unzip the directories and files contained in the archive to
the root of your "Combat Flight Simulator 2" directory on your hard drive (in
verbatim).

Usage
-----
When you're ready to do battle in the Midway and Coral Sea areas and missions,
simply start Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2.

When Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 starts you can either:

1. Choose the Free Flight option, and fly any of the twelve newly-added
   aircraft installed.

2. Choose the Quick Combat option, and fly any of the newly-added aircraft
against the best that Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 has to offer.

3. Fly one of the two new campaigns. The new campaigns are:

   * "Battle For Midway - IJN" - Imperial Japanese Navy, from the side of the Japanese.
   * "Battle For Midway - USN" - U.S. Navy, from the side of the U.S..

4. Fly any of the new individual missions:

   * "BFM - Coral Sea Missions" - U.S. or Japan
   * "BFM - Midway Missions" - U.S. or Japan

Campaigns and Missions Notes
----------------------------
There are a few important things about the campaigns and missions that you
should note:

1. Some of the missions have you launch from the carrier (or already in the
air) and immediately intercept incoming bombers. In these missions, when you
get behind the carrier, Combat Flight Simulator 2 thinks you are trying to
land and will bring up the Landing Signal Officer (LSO). Just ignore the LSO
and keep on your enemy's tail!

2. While it is possible to take off from the carrier decks, setting the planes
back onto the carrier deck may be a challenge. When landing, make sure that
your tailhook and flaps are extended, try to approach the carrier deck as
slow as possible, and quickly apply the brakes as hard as you can.

3. Missions that include a goal of destroying a carrier can be QUITE difficult
(and time consuming), especially when running Microsoft Combat Flight
Simulator 2 with "Maximum Realism" settings. Remember to efficiently command
your own wingman and squadron (if equipped), and to quickly and accurately
drop your bombs (if equipped) on the carrier. Then KEEP STRAFING the carrier
with your guns for an eventual successfully completed mission!

4. Careful attention to your aircraft's "Fuel Mixture" and "Prop Pitch" is a
MUST when running Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 with "Maximum Realism"
settings to ensure that you have enough fuel for the trip home. Adjust your
"Fuel Mixture" and "Prop Pitch" to the correct settings BEFORE warping (and
during the battle) to ensure that you don't run out of fuel and crash into
   the sea!

5. Final waypoint warping is not enabled in most of the missions. To save you
hundreds of miles of flying back to your departing airstrip or aircraft
carrier after finishing a mission, add "Free_Warp=1" under the "[CHEATS]"
section of your "CFS2.cfg" file using Windows Notepad. Another alternative
is to install Bill Potvin's "CFO Weather v7.5.7"
   (http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/Cfsops/Modules/cfo_weather/Cfo_Weather_75.htm) which
has a feature to enable the "Free Warp" cheat on the fly.

You can then warp to the final waypoint near the landing area of the
airstrip or aircraft carrier after finishing a mission.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Ensure that you have ACTUALLY COMPLETED the mission before
using "Free Warp", or you will NOT be credited for accomplishing the
   mission!

6. Unlike Abacus Publishing's original and relatively bug-filled version of
their "Battle For Midway" package for Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2, I
myself have successfully completed each of these edited missions and
campaigns numerous times during testing with Microsoft Combat Flight
Simulator 2 configured for "Maximum Realism" settings, and campaign
difficulty set to "Hard"... so I KNOW that "it can be done" 🙂

ENJOY and HAVE FUN!
