When am I too old for sim aviation?

I am now 54 years old. No longer drink alcohol, no longer smoke.

My only vice, is spending as much time as possible, on my computer.

No, not on Facebook, or Twitter, but, flying my Sim Aircraft.

The other evening, one of my kids, said to me, "Bit old for that aren't you"

After some consideration, I came to the conclusion, that one can

not be too old, to fly a simulator, as long as, the eyesight, works well

enough to see the gauges, the co-ordination, allows one to have control

of the aircraft, on the ground, and in the air. You remember where

you are going, and why. And, the bathroom breaks, are few.

I am no expert, I learn something new, every time I start up FS9.

This Sim Aviation, is not just a whimsical pastime. There is so much involved.

Math, geography, geometry, physics. Just some of the stuff I have had

to study, to get the most, out of the Sim. Am I taking it too seriously?

I don't think so. It keeps my brain active, gives me challenges, and

problems, that need to be solved.

Too old for Sim Aviation? I am a teenager in the Sim Aviation world...

Never to old! I first purchased FS2 for my Atari 800 back in 1985 and have had every edition since. At 52 I plan on FSing for another 32 years and beyond.

Gaztop, I can so relate to your story. I'm 53 and finally decided a couple years ago to grow up and ditch the drink and smoke too. Not into social medial much myself either. I'd always played around with flight sims over the years, but never got serious.

My first fascination was with Sublogic in 1984. Ran it on a Commadore 64 in college. Frame rate probably in the single digits with 8 bit color and forever to load what you had to use your imagination to call - scenery - from a 1541 floppy drive. Anyway... now I'm looking, like you, to get back into it - to learn. You're absolutely right - there's a lot to it, and never too old. Get good at it, do it right and it'll be the thing to keep you young!

The realism that can be achieved with today's hardware and software - incredible! Now to decide which sim to invest time and (likely) money into. I still have "boxed" DVD versions of FSX and XP9 and after trying both, decided to download XP11. Haven't installed add-ons for either yet, but am really enjoying just flying basic traffic patterns in the Cessna in XP at different airports. I need to look at FSX again and then decide which sim it's gonna be.

Anyway - again, never too young! Keep on flying and keep 'er out of the trees!

Trust me you are never too old for Flight Sim. Enjoyed reading your entry as I am 44 now and we have loads in common other than you having children whereas I don't. I also use FS9 rather than anything that has appeared since through preference. May I wish you many more happy years on Flight Sim that there are to come - all the best.

Never too old, I'm 66 and a great grandfather 4 times. I started Simming in the mid eighties.. My first was MS Flight sim 1.0 and I haven't stopped since. Ive tried them all but I kinda stuck on FS2004.

Fly till you die.

Hello,

This sun´bject hits home with me too. I am over 60, and a real world pilot, although due to phycial constraints, I have not sat right seat for many years. But my love of flying is strong. In my early days, Simulators where nothing more then moving wire frame models, not much fun. But tech advanced, computers faster and here we are.

In my opinion, regardless of what Sim a person uses, Simulations give anyone a chance to experience things that otherwise they could not, without the risk of the real world. My drive to become a lic Piilot, was due to my life long dream of flying Commerical jets, well I did fly real planes but never made it to Jets, sadly. But Simulations changed that. Are we to old? I think not.
