/images/notams/notams21/tabu0209/tabu0209.jpgNightXP V2, first package for X-Plane, introduces coverage for the wholeof New York. What exactly does NightXP do to enhance X-Plane lights system?NightXP V2 introduces new lamps into the existing ecosystem and is designedto work together with default lights. Can be used with Vulkan or in OpenGLmode. It is designed to create those little details the night brings with itsdarkness in the nocturnal X-Plane world. The lamps are strategically positioned to illuminate buildings withemissive 3D light reflection taking advanced of new X-Plane reflectivesurfaces. They are designed to be just a little bit bigger than defaultlights to enhance their visibility and light. /images/notams/notams21/tabu0209/new-york-1.jpg /images/notams/notams21/tabu0209/new-york-2.jpgNightXP is not invasive scenery, it is designed to avoid lightovercrowding. NightXP targets urban areas where there are buildings, lit upbuildings and roads only in residential areas for the whole country or USstate they cover. For example, it will not add light on motorways or majorroads as X-Plane is already covered. Instead, it will light up theresidential roads, buildings, courtyards, alleyways, piers and depots tomention a few. Night3D is designed to make the most of X-Plane’s new materials featuringlight reflections on the ground, water, ice, windows, roofs and any nativeX-Plane material designed to reflect light. Night3D works hard at night andrests in the day when the lamps are still visible but in 'Off' mode. Night3Dis strategically positioned to resemble lampposts; we chose a shape and sizeto make sure it is visible for aircraft when flying over at night. X-Plane 11 offers stunning and extensive night effects. NightXP is fullycompatible with photorealistic scenery and any VFR objects scenery as lampsare positioned respecting geographical features. Night XP UK And IrelandPublisher: TaburetReview Author: Rene BruunSuggested Price: $14.99/images/fsc/wbicons/pilot-shop-buy.pngBeing a keen X-Plane user, I am always excited to see an add-onwhich enhances the world of X-Plane, especially if that includes mylocal area (Ireland). Below is the developer's description from thestore page... IntroductionNight XP is a nocturnal scenery for those who like to live life atnight, and for those who like to fly spectacular night scenery! We have blended existing X-Plane 10/X-Plane 11 scenery withnocturnal textures to bring the night world alive! Exactly as youwould see it if you were to fly on a real plane at night, morespecifically as a real pilot would see it at night! This title takes full advantage of the X-Plane scenery system andis very gentle on frame rates. It also works alongside any HD mesh,photo-realistic scenery, airport scenery, or any other scenery youwould like to put on top of it. The installation is very easy and works with all Windows operatingsystems and Mac! InstallationThe zipped file is just 82 MB in size and is a quick enoughdownload. Once unzipped, you'll find 16 individual folders which haveto be placed into your 'Custom Scenery' folder (it really is thatsimple to install). A PDF explains how to install the add-on andgives basic info about the scenery. It also advises the user that for the best possible results, yourscenery settings should be set to EXTREME (gulp)! DocumentationAs mentioned above, there is a single PDF file which explains bothinstallation and uninstall procedures. Being only two pages long,it's a relatively short read and is very easy to follow. Upon reading the PDF however, I noticed a glaring omission thathadn't been mentioned in the store description page; namely the systemrequirements: 1GB VRAM minimum, 2GB+ VRAM recommended. As my machine was below these requirements, I was not particularlyoptimistic about being able to use this add-on. Had theserequirements been listed in the product description, it would havehelped me decide on whether or not to purchase the product! However, not one to back down, I decided to carry on with the review. UsageFirst off I fired up my X-Plane installation to take some screenshots of the default night textures. For reference, I am using a 2012 iMac, 12GB of RAM but (here is thebig limitation), only a 512MB video card. When I originally purchasedmy Mac, I hadn't intended it to be a gaming machine, however, sincejoining the X-Plane community, I have found its GPU to be slightlylacking with high end add-ons (I won't make this mistake again with mynext iMac). Because of the VRAM limitation, I have to set my objects settingsin X-Plane's rendering options to 'tons', and 'texture resolution' to'high'. HDR is a big no no, as my graphics card simply wouldn't beable to handle it. Taking off from Dublin (EIDW) in a Swiss 737-300, I climbed overthe city and out to sea. Below are the screen shots of the defaultX-Plane night textures. /images/reviews/nightxp/t/image1.jpg /images/reviews/nightxp/t/image2.jpgAs you can see, they are acceptable default textures. Of course, they would look nicer with HDR, but for me, they look fine. So now intrigued, I installed the Night Scenery for UK & Irelandand fired up the simulator again. Performing the same route as before, I noticed that there were nowareas of the city, which exhibited a yellow hue! Personally I foundit looked a bit strange, but it did seem to have the desired effect ofadding more light to the area. I am sure if I had a high end graphicscard, the textures would look better. I tried two different settingsto see if I could make any improvements to what I was seeing. FirstlyI changed X-Plane's textures from 'high' to 'very high', and below aretwo screen shots showing the results. /images/reviews/nightxp/t/image3.jpg /images/reviews/nightxp/t/image4.jpgThe results I found, looked oddly strange, as the default roadsshowed up over the yellow hue textures on the ground, which in allhonesty, was a bit distracting! Hoping to improve the situation, Inow enabled HDR lighting. Unfortunately, this had the effect oftotally killing my frame rates! /images/reviews/nightxp/t/image5.jpgEven with HDR enabled though, I could not see any noticeabledifference (however this could be down to the limitations of myGPU). PerformanceThe scenery itself, like the developer stated, has very littleimpact on frame rates, unless of course, if HDR is turned on. If youwant to enable HDR, then the recommended systems requirements of 2GB+VRAM is the way to go. Alas, not all X-Plane users have the means to own a high endsystem, so for users like myself, I feel slightly let down that therequirements needed to run this add-on were not listed prior topurchase! Below is a comparison image side by side for you to compare... /images/reviews/nightxp/t/image6.jpgConclusionIf you have a high end machine which can run X-Plane at 'extreme'rendering settings, then I am sure this would be a good add-on topurchase. For me though, running on my now limited video card, I willcontinue to use the default night textures as these willsuffice...that is, until I get my shiny new iMac later this year! Pros:Small downloadEasy installationHighly affordableSimulator improvements (with correct hardware)Cons:Minimum system specs not listed in the developer's description ofthe add-on - meaning you're paying for a product you may not be ableto use.Review System:27' iMac2.7 GHz Intel Core i512 GB 1333 MHz DDR3AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB/images/notams/notams17/tabu0314.jpgRene Bruun Purchase Taburet - Night XP UK and Ireland for X-Plane
