G'day, been a while!

I was just wondering if there is a way to delete or remove unwanted planes in FSX (steam edition)?

like there are some of the built in planes I'd like to get rid of and also some have somehow doubled up that I may have put ie downloaded?

would really like to do this.

thanks

milo

A simple way is set the panel OFF on the aircraft.cfg and you don't see the plane in the free flight menue.

[fltsim.0]

title=Cessna Grand Caravan Paint1

sim=Cessna208B

model=

panel=OFF

sound=

texture=1

kb_checklists=Cessna208B_Check

kb_reference=Cessna208B_ref

Hi Milo,

+1 to Jan's suggestion - this is best practice, especially with the default planes.

If you delete any of the default planes you may encounter problems with other addons, especially freeware stuff. There are a lot of models out there that don't have dedicated panels and are simply aliased to use the panels used by the default planes. Using the method outlined above will remove the aircraft from the selection list but will allow any aliased aircraft to access the panel.

WRT to the duplicated entries. Three possibilities exist that may be the cause of the problem.

1. It could be copies of the same model in two different but similar folder names (as you can't have duplicate folder names) such as Aircraft ABC and Aircraft ABC copy or Aircraft ABC (1).

2. It could be copies of the same model in two totally different folder names such as Aircraft ABC and Aircraft XYZ.

3. You have duplicate entries in the aircraft.cfg file. For example you may have two entries for the same texture at different [fltsim.XX] entries. Or it may be that one of the entries is pointing to the wrong texture.

First, go through your list by viewing the aircraft in the selection pane. Make notes of the duplicate entries, including any info that will help you ID them. like the Aircraft Manufacturer list entry and details of the individual texture(s).

Search your Simobjects folders as follows

For 1 - Check for similar duplicate folder entries and then compare the contents of the folders. If a duplicate delete one of the folders.

For 2 - Check for duplicate aircraft type folder entries and then compare the contents of the folders. If a duplicate is found delete one of the folders

For 3 - Check the aircraft.cfg for duplicated entries pointing to the same Texture= entry. Delete duplicate entries and then re-order the remaining list so there are no gaps in the [fltsim.XX] number listing OR edit the entry to point to the correct texture.

Regards

Brian

Jan's answer is the best solution / fix. If you don't have a panel the Sim will not load that airplane, so you won't 'see' it. What 'panel=OFF' does is to tell Sim to 'use' a non-existing panel (a 'trick') so when it doesn't find it that airplane won't be loaded. It's still there but Sim can't 'use' it. So you won't see it listed. And since it's still there any airplane that is aliased to it's panel, or sound, will still work. NEVER delete any default airplanes. Period. Very 'BAD' practice.
