/images/notams/notams21/vsky0323/goblin-1.jpgMeanwhile at VSKYLABS...Test-Pilot: XF-85 Project for X-Plane byLaminar Research (coming soon). The project introduces a comprehensiveresearch-based, advanced XF-85 simulation, built around X-Plane'sexperimental flight model environment. The VSKYLABS Test-Pilot: XF-85 Project is being developed followinga years-based research, to include authentic flight dynamics, performance and handling characteristics based on real and authenticwind tunnel, test-flights reports and technical documents. Theaircraft includes authentic systems architectures (controls, pressurization and pneumatic systems, oxygen, flight instrumentssetup, electrical system, fuel system, fire extinguishing system andmore). /images/notams/notams21/vsky0323/goblin-2.jpgDue to several challenges related to X-Plane vs Parasite aircraftoperations, a dedicated fixed landing gear system was implemented toallow ground operations and flight envelope exploration that are notpossible when using the belly-skid configuration. The fixed-landinggear configuration is available by user's choice. The project will allow to explore the XF-85 aircraft operations, performance, handling and maneuverability, feasible operational radiusand other operational aspects, all with full-VR compatibility. Anoriginal, valuable research-based, fully illustrated Pilot OperationsManual is part of the project. Stay tuned for more! /images/notams/notams20/vsky0929/xf85-1.jpgThe VSKYLABS 'Test-Flight': XF-85 / 2020 - Some beautiful shotstaken nearby and above the Mojave Desert, California. The project is named "XF-85 / 2020" because of variousmodifications and systems which were implemented into the aircraft andcockpit environment, mainly to allow testing and evaluation ofground-based operations (taxi, take-off and landings). Other on-boardequipment was set to fill-in several research-based-gaps withplausible instrumentation replacements. The VSKYLABS 'Test-Pilot': XF-85 / 2020 allows to practiceconventional landings using a unique fixed landing gear system whichwas implemented for the purpose of this project, as well as theauthentic belly-landing practice (the steel belly skid is visible inthe attached screen shots). /images/notams/notams20/vsky0929/xf85-2.jpgThe VSKYLABS 'Test-Pilot': XF-85 / 2020 Project has been underdevelopment for about 2+ years, and it has finally reached advanceddevelopment stages. It is scheduled as a 2020 release, and as itseems, it will follow the upcoming VSKYLABS Robinson R44 v1.0 Projectrelease (which is undergoing its final pre-release preparations). Flying the VSKYLABS XF-85/2020, in VR, at Edwards AFB in X-Plane byLaminar Research , for the first time (during development) was noother than EPIC! /images/notams/notams20/vsky0924.jpgAfter succeeding to overcome several engineering and conceptualchallenges, the VSKYLABS 'Test-Pilot': XF-85 / 2020 Project hasreached advanced development phases! Similar to the VSKYLABS 'Test-Pilot': He-162 Project, the VSKYLABSXF-85 / 2020 will challenge the innovative late 40's concept using themost advanced flight simulation environment available nowadays:X-Plane 11. The XF-85 was the world's smallest jet-fighter aircraft, designed toultimately defend bombers from hostile interceptor aircraft. Being a"parasite" aircraft, it had no landing gear. It was meant to belaunched and hook back onto its bomber "mother-ship" using a specialretractable hook. In case of emergency, it was able to land on itsbelly, utilizing a steel skid, located underneath its fuselage. Flight reports showed that the XF-85 was stable and easy tofly. However, flying in close proximity to the bomber "mother-ship",as part of the docking process, introduced severe turbulent airflowissues which made docking almost impossible while requiringunacceptable pilot skills and workload. Could the XF-85 be assigned as an actual jet-fighter at the time? How did its unique design affected maneuverability and stabilityduring a proposed dog-fight? Was it easy to manage its energy duringflight? How high it could actually fly? How fast? Could it perform asafe dead-stick landing? There's only one way to find out! The VSKYLABS 'Test-Pilot': FX-85 / 2020 Project is introducing theXF-85 concept with a special focus on the aerodynamics and power-plantaspects. The XJ-34 engine is also being simulated with highauthenticity and accuracy, as it is one of the core components of theXF-85. Actual docking to the "Mother-ship" aircraft is not simulated inX-Plane. The VSKYLABS FX-85 / 2020 is featuring several engineering "aids",such as alternative fixed landing gears configuration mode to allow(fictional but plausible) ground-based operations including takeoffcapability. The fully equipped interactive cockpit is also designed toallow an authentic representation of the XF-85 cockpit, with a few'2020 modern equipment modifications'. The VSKYLABS XF-85 / 2020 is an exciting educational and researchproject. It is a fully functional experimental jet-fighter, fullyequipped with systems on board and designed for ultimate VR experienceand operations.
