/images/notams/notams22/inns0406.jpgInnsbruck Airport (IATA: INN, ICAO: LOWI), also known asKranebitten Airport, is the largest international airport in Tyrol inwestern Austria. It is located approximately 2.5 miles from the centreof Innsbruck. The airport, which was opened in 1925, handlesregional flights around the Alps, as well as seasonal internationaltraffic to further European destinations. During the winter, activityincreases significantly, due to the high number of skiers travellingto the region. Innsbruck Airport is well known for having a difficult approach dueto surrounding terrain, prohibiting certain aircraft types fromoperating at the airport. The approach and descent is a verycomplicated process-the Alps create vicious winds and currents, whichthe pilot has to deal with throughout the process. Because there aremountains all around, the plane usually circles the airport, enters apattern, to decrease both speed and altitude. Source
