This City airport is right in the heart of Belfast, closeto the docks, the Exhibition centre and the Titanic museum. Directlyopposite is the famous original Shorts of Belfast factory complexwhich latter became a 'Bombardier' factory but has now changed handsagain to 'Spirit Aerospace' Belfast City airport opened in 1938 andwas called Sydenham Airport. It was the main airport at the time forBelfast, but war was too soon changed how it was used. During the war,it was named HMS Gadwall (also known as RNAS Belfast or RNASSydenham). Unlike other UK airports, it remained in RAF or RNASservice right up until 1978, carrying the name RAF Belfast. After 1978it was then purely used by Shorts aircraft manufacturers. In 1983, itstarted to attract interest from airlines as a true airport again, andvarious routes were started up. In 2001 a new modern terminal wasbuild and continued to expand. Today many airlines fly from BelfastCity including Flybe(version2), British Airways, EasyJet, Ryanair andAer Lingus. Ryanair, have since moved away due to the pandemic, butmay return at some point. Our scenery is made with HD photographic images that uses PBRmaterials. Belfast City airport is located 4 miles from the city centre andshares the airfield with the Bombardier aircraft facility. Theairfield started life in 1938 as Belfast Harbour airport"Sydenham". During the war years, it was know as HMS Nutts Corner &RAF Belfast and was the birth place of many Shorts aircraft includingthe shorts flying boat. The Runway was extended in 1952 to its current6000ft length and at the time, its terminal facility were very basiccomprising of sheds and war time Nissan huts. /images/notams/notams18/uk2k1115/belfast2.jpgFrom 1983 onwards the airport built new buildings when it became anofficial airport and in 2001 the current terminal was constructed. In2006 the airport was renamed to "George Best Belfast City airport" inmemory of the footballer.
