/images/notams/notams19/care0819/f50-1.jpgCarenado appears to be making good progress on their F50 turbopropairliner for X-Plane. They've just released a new batch of screen shotsthat show a variety of exterior liveries as well as the cockpit. Nofurther details are provided but it's likely to have features similarto their previously released FSX/P3D version. /images/notams/notams19/care0819/f50-2.jpg /images/notams/notams19/care0819/f50-3.jpg /images/notams/notams19/care0819/f50-4.jpg /images/notams/notams19/care0819/f50-5.jpgSource

Fokker F50Publisher: CarenadoReview Author: Meng YuSuggested Price: $44.95/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.pngBrief HistoryBorn as a successor to the popularFokker 27 "Friendship" turboprop, the Fokker 50 (F50) was Fokker'sanswer to dwindling sales numbers of the Friendship. It boasts severalimprovements in terms of efficiency in order to achieve up to a 30%reduction in fuel consumption over its predecessor. Its maiden flighttook place on the 28th of December, 1985 and received certificationfrom Dutch authorities in 1987. Faced with stiff competition and several delays, the F50 neverreally became the success Fokker wanted. In March 1996, the productionof the F50 ended, with only 213 airframes built and delivered toairlines such as Avianca, KLM and Lufthansa. Exterior ModelIn FSX, the exterior model of the F50 lives up to the expectationone would have of Carenado. The usual bells and whistles, such as 4Ktexturing and dynamic propeller shine, are all included with thisaircraft. The package comes with ten HD liveries and one blank livery forthe more creative flight simmer to create additional liveries. /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-exterior01.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-exterior02.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-exterior05.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-exterior03.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-exterior04.jpgThe included airlines are: Air Baltic, Alliance Airlines, Fly VLM,Virgin Australia, Insel Air, SAS and KLM Cityhopper. Also included arethe liveries of the Taiwan Air Force, Republic of Singapore Air Force(an aircraft which I've personally had the pleasure to take a ride on)and a livery simply designated as "5Y-SMA". From what I gather, it seems that the livery of 5Y-SMA is based onthat of Skyward Express, an airline and air charter company based inKenya. However, I could find no mention of the registration 5Y-SMA,though 5Y-SMS is indeed a real F50 with the company. Nonetheless, thename "Skyward Express" is not mentioned anywhere in the package. Also of note is an error on the Republic of Singapore Air Forcelivery, which states "Singapore Air Force" instead of "Republic ofSingapore Air Force", though I suppose this is somewhat intentional, perhaps due to licensing issues or otherwise. /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-rsaf01.jpgSurprisingly though, the exterior model is extremely frame ratefriendly. Despite my system being one that's several years old, itstill managed to perform excellently, delivering a smooth 60 FPS ormore all the time. It should be noted though, I did not have add-onscenery installed whilst performing my tests, and the performanceimpact from other add-ons may impact your frame rate as well. Interior Model And SystemsMoving onto the interior of the aircraft, the splendid looks havebeen brought over to the interior. Scratches and other minorimperfections modelled into the interior all bring realism to theaircraft. Even a virtual cabin has been modelled, along with severalpre-made views to boot. Mercifully, the terrible odors that werepresent when I stepped foot onto the F50 several years ago were notmodelled in this add-on. /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-interior06.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-interior01.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-interior02.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-interior08.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-interior03.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-interior04.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-interior07.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-interior05.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-interior09.jpgAlmost all the switches and knobs are interactable, along withseveral miscellaneous items such as armrests and the fresh airscoop. Whilst I'm unsure if the latter has any tangible effectmodelled beyond the visual animation, I do enjoy it when aircraftcome with more than purely systems related animations. The cockpitdoor appears to be from an era when security wasn't of paramountconcern, but it does open fuss-free with a simple click, should youwish to pay a visit to the cabin. In said cabin, not much can be done beyond drawing the shades andmoving the viewpoint around to look at different views. What isinteresting, however, is that the shades drawn in the cabin visuallyaffects the exterior model too. In this example, the front three shadeswere drawn in the interior, and it corresponds to the three drawn shadesas seen from the exterior. It should be noted that the cabin may berather taxing on the system, as I noted a significant frame rate dropbetween the cabin-less "LITE" version and the normal version with thecabin. If you face performance issues with this aircraft, perhapsswitching to the cabin-less version of the aircraft will help. /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-shades01.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-shades02.jpgBeyond the looks, though, there really isn't that much to showfor. Whilst the knobs and switches are modelled, the flight managementis handled only by a simplistic "Universal" Flight Management System(FMS), which feels somewhat unintuitive to use. The FMS can handlesimple functions such as flight planning, flying a SID/STAR, flyingdirectly to a waypoint on your flight plan or viewing performance andfuel parameters. Judging by pictures online, the FMS captures the lookand feel of the real-world FMS decently, though I don't suppose thatthe functions are captured fully. Nonetheless, due to my inexperiencewith regards to the specific systems of the F50, I cannot outline thespecific differences between the real-world FMS and the onerepresented by Carenado. Carenado also touts GTN750 integration, which I am unable to testsince I do not own the GTN750 add-on. If you had the add-on, there isa click-spot on the center pedestal which you can use to bring up theGTN750 panel. In closing, whilst the appearances of the cockpit and cabin arecertainly top-notch and live up to the quality set by previousCarenado releases, the lack of in depth systems simulations may be aturn-off for serious pilots looking for an aircraft to add to theircollection. Flight DynamicsMy first impressions of the aircraft places it as a heavier defaultKing Air 350, with much lower sensitivity on the elevator and slowerroll rate. During taxiing, the aircraft performs favorably, with a tightturning radius and good acceleration, but throttle control provedsomewhat challenging. When pushing the throttles forward, the torqueproduced increases very slowly initially. After a certain point, thetorque jumps to around 35%, at which point the aircraft surges forwardand accelerates quickly. Whilst I'm unsure if this is a realisticrepresentation of the throttles on the aircraft, I found it best toallow the engines to spool up, accelerate then bring the engines backdown to slightly above idle and taxi. /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-takeoff01.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-takeoff02.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-takeoff03.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-takeoff04.jpgOn takeoff, the aircraft accelerates extremely quickly to reach itstakeoff speed and can climb out rather quickly. The autopilot in thisadd-on is pretty well modelled with several modes: IAS, VS or ALThold, along with an arming switch to hold a pre-selected altitude. Ielected to test out IAS mode, in which the autopilot will attempt tohold the speed of the aircraft by pitching the nose. In my experience, given the correct throttle settings, the autopilot can maintain thespeed displayed on the PFD (which corresponds to the speed which youengaged IAS mode at, there appears to be no manual way to set the IAShold speed) to within 2 to 3 knots. At altitude, I tried some stall tests, including a power on (flaps10 degrees, gear down, full power) and power off (flaps full, geardown, idle throttle) stall test. The stall characteristics representedare rather benign. When the aircraft stalls, the alarm sounds, but noimmediate attitude change is noted. Upon holding the stall further toallow the airspeed to drop, the nose slowly starts pitching down andthe airspeed picks back up, allowing the aircraft to recover from thestall. Minimal pilot input is required to recover. On approach, this aircraft is a little bit of a challenge tofly. Unlike modern day airliners, the Fokker 50 tends to sink fasterthan other aircraft I've flown. As a result, if you start descendingtoo soon, you'll find yourself adding power and holding the nose witha positive attitude the majority of your descent. On a second landing, Itried coming in with more altitude than usual and opting for a slightnose down attitude. This seems to work better and allows for bettervisibility of the runway during landing. /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-landing01.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-landing02.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-landing03.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-landing04.jpg /images/reviews/caref50/t/f50-landing05.jpgWhen flaring, the aircraft slows down its descent nicely withoutfloating down the runway, leading to a firm but smoothtouchdown. Applying the reverse thrusters slows the aircraft quicklydown to 60 knots, when the wheel brakes were applied. Overall, the aircraft is rather enjoyable to fly, and provides adeparture from the usual airliners I'm more accustomed toflying. Whilst I believe that the FMS could certainly be improved, thecurrent model remains usable in getting the plane from one airport tothe other. Documentation And Other Misc. ItemsThe Carenado Fokker F50 comes with several documents detailing itsoperations in the "Carenado" folder in the FSX root folder. Logically, this should be similar for P3D, though I cannot confirm that. Thedocumentation provided spells out the normal and emergency procedures, provides some performance tables as well as gives a basic walkthroughof the FMS system. I feel that whilst these are enough, a tutorial flight much likewhatAerosoftdoes with its Airbus airliners will provide much needed help to newerpilots who may not have all the experience under their belt. Inparticular, the FMS documentation was a little confusing tounderstand. With the sizable FMS screen shots, I found myselfconstantly scrolling back and forth between picture and text in orderto piece together how the FMS worked. In the end, the aircraft holds much of the qualities of a Carenadoaircraft, for better or worse. Like its predecessors, it featuresamazing looks and eye candy that would cause retinal diabetes (if itwere a thing) but starts becoming lackluster when it boils down toimmersion and systems. It's really up to the individual user to see ifthis add-on appeals to him/her. Strong cases can be built both for andagainst its purchase. Ultimately, I believe that this is currently the best Fokker F50add-on out there (excluding any Fokker F27 add-ons, that's a differentaircraft) currently which will appeal to Fokker F50 fans greatly. /images/reviews/caref50/carenado-f50.jpgMeng Yu Purchase Carenado - Fokker F50 Shop other Carenado products
