P-51D MustangPublisher: Aeroplane HeavenReview Author: Dale AshcroftSuggested Price: $35.95/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-01.jpgAircraft OverviewThe following is an extract from Wikipedia: The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range,single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II andthe Korean War, among other conflicts. The Mustang was designed inApril 1940 by a team headed by James Kindelberger of North AmericanAviation (NAA) in response to a requirement of the British PurchasingCommission. From late 1943, P-51Bs and P-51Cs (supplemented by P-51Ds frommid-1944) were used by the USAAF's Eighth Air Force to escort bombersin raids over Germany, while the RAF's Second Tactical Air Force andthe USAAF's Ninth Air Force used the Merlin-powered Mustangs asfighter-bombers, roles in which the Mustang helped ensure Allied airsuperiority in 1944. The P-51 was also used by Allied air forces inthe North African, Mediterranean, Italian, and Pacifictheatres. During World War II, Mustang pilots claimed to havedestroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft. At the start of the Korean War, the Mustang, by then redesignatedF-51, was the main fighter of the United States until jet fighters, including North American's F-86, took over this role; the Mustang thenbecame a specialized fighter-bomber. Despite the advent of jetfighters, the Mustang remained in service with some air forces untilthe early 1980s. After the Korean War, Mustangs became popularcivilian warbirds and air racing aircraft. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-02.jpgPurchasingAt the time of this review, the aircraft is priced at a veryreasonable £27.43 ($35.95) which is great as you get a lot ofbang for your buck with this one. The purchase of the product wasquick and painless from the FlightSim.Com Store and with a downloadsize of around 2.1 GB. InstallOne thing that I have come to love of the new MSFS is the quick wayof manually installing a product, no more needing to run through anauto installer that sends the files to the correct location such as afolder for the aircraft, gauges, etc. Simply drag and drop into thecommunity folder and off you go. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-05.jpgDocumentationThe documentation included with the product is extensive anddetails everything that you need to know about how to operate thiswarbird. It includes: Aircraft specsCockpit layoutStart procedureTake-off procedureLanding procedureFeatures of the aircraftAddendumEnough to get you off the ground and enjoying the aircraft. CockpitThe cockpit is of course from an era when everything was steamdriven. Panning around the cockpit you can see the wear and tear whichadds a very much worn look to the aircraft. If we had the ability tosmell the cockpit you could almost get a whiff of the cordite thatwould fill the cockpit as the machine guns were fired. The viewsoutside of the cockpit vary depending on what phase of flight you arein. Whilst you are on the ground it can be difficult to see where youare going, which is what you would expect from a tail-dragger so it'sbest to try and lean out of the cockpit to see where you are going, easy to do if you have some sort of head tracking or use VR. Once youare up in the air, the views are fantastic; you can only imagine whatit must be like to see those wings on your shoulders in real life. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-04.jpgThe detail around the cockpit is lovely. You can see that thedeveloper has painstakingly tried to bring as much to the table aspossible. Visually the cockpit can only be described as a masterpiece, however with that said the aircraft is not study level so don't expectit to be complicated in terms of systems; I have never operated thereal aircraft so I couldn't accurately say how far off it is. Allswitches are 'flickable'. Having said that, Aeroplane Heaven have beenvery smart with using some of the more miscellaneous switches asfunctions to toggle options, such as changing from a gun site to amodern day GPS display. There is also a hidden panel that allows foryou to toggle the pilot, gun bay panels on the wings and so on. Overall the cockpit is lovely and really makes you feel you are atthe controls of something that will knock your socks off. ExternalsThe P-51D is such a beautiful looking machine. Whichever angle youcast your eye over her, she urges you to climb on that beautiful wingand perch yourself in a cockpit that is steeped in history. Thedeveloper has worked nothing short of wonders with the exquisitemodelling that is on display. Take a look in the undercarriage bays,it most definitely looks like the aircraft has been heavily usedthroughout its life. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-03.jpgIncluded are 16 liveries which represent various squadrons thatutilised the P-51 during its operational life as well as a few from themodern era. As you would expect with a workhorse that would have beenflying dangerous missions over Europe, the weathering of coursematches those hours in the air with dirt scuffs from the gun firing, the chips in the paint work, all of which adds to a lovely authenticlook which in turn adds to the experience. The model allows you to add either external fuel tanks which justrequire fuel to be placed in the external tanks via the fuel andpayload manager or you can have bombs attached, which again can beadded via the fuel and payload manager. Whilst the bombs can be added, they aren't functional but still adds to the look and feel of awarrior at your fingertips. Overall the external model is beautiful, she oozes elegance mixedwith a menacing bite - a true thoroughbred. Flight ModelSpeed - This is one of the things that springs to mind when youhave a minute to sit back and think about what this aircraft iscapable of. However, let's start before there with trying to get thisbeast off of the ground. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-06.jpgShe's hard work on the first couple of trips make no mistake. Youhave to edge the throttle forwards on the take-off roll and hold thestick back, almost touching your gut. This locks the tail wheel inplace so you can try and hold her steady as you hurtle down therunway. The reason you edge the throttle forward is to ensure youdon't go careening off the runway which is something I found out formyself on a number of occasions. Stick with it, be patient and you'llget there. If however you do get frustrated, there is a switch in thecockpit that allows for this to be skipped and makes for a much easiertake-off run - but where's the fun in that? Once you are airborne, she can quickly get away from you if you donot reign the throttle back you can soon be heading towards 400 knots, but this does allow you to climb to altitude rapidly. Having all thispower is great for when you want to fly a few aerobatic sequences. Ifyou ever find yourself in trouble you can always (most of the time)power your way out of it. During the stages in the circuit, it's important to keep the poweron as you add the stages of flaps. If you aren't careful the aircraftcan start to sink and no matter how much you pull the stick back, youwon't recover. The throttle is your friend and you shouldn't forgetthat. Overall, the flight model is beautiful. If this is only a fractionof what the real aircraft flys like then we are lucky to have theability to simulate that. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-07.jpgSoundsIn many ways the sounds can speak for themselves. Those that arereading this have probably either seen a Mustang fly in real life orvia video, so in your mind you already have a concept of what itshould sound like vs what it actually does sound like. This engine purrs whilst you sit at idle with a gentle hum andrattle. She urges you to push the throttles forward and listen to thatmagnificent engine roar into life. Sounds are very subjective as alarge part of what you experience is down to your setup. I personallyuse headphones which leaves no room for the sound to go other thatinto your ear and I really think that I benefit from that. Both insideand out, she sends goose bumps down my spine when you 'give it thebeans', the roar is incredible. Whilst you don't get the same sense offeeling the sound, much like you would do if you were stood next tothe real thing, you do get some sense of experiencing somethingspecial that you just can't bear to switch the sim off. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-08.jpgVRVR is an interesting area to talk about. More and more people areslowing migrating over, as I did a few years ago and I haven't lookedback since. I use the Oculus Rift with plenty of joy. Sitting in thecockpit in VR is amazing, you feel so confined to a fairly roomycockpit compared to other aircraft of the time such as theSpitfire. Having that ability to truly immerse yourself in such anaircraft is incredible. Unfortunately there is a good chance I willnever get to fly a real Mustang, the lack of a pilot's license beingone of the primary reasons, so this goes a long way to fulfilling adream of being able to put myself at the controls of a warbird. VR isa game changer for everyone that uses it, and using the Mustang in VRis incredible. System RequirementsRecommended Specs:CPU: 4 cores, 3.0 GHz or betterGPU: Nvidia 1060 or better, with at least 4 GB dedicated video memoryRAM: 8 GB minimumHard disk space: 4.50 GB requiredTest SpecsIntel Core i7-9700K 3.6 GHz (Coffee Lake) Socket LGA1151 ProcessorCorsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200 MHzAsus GeForce RTX 2080 Dual OC 8192 MB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics CardMicrosoft Windows 10 Home AdvancedSamsung 1TB 860 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 64 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-09.jpgOverallThere's a famous line from a British comedy show called BlackAdder, a World War one pilot states that his aircraft makes you wantto "get inside her five times a day, and take her to heaven andback". The same phrase can be said for this aircraft, she is anabsolute work of art. She has a firm place on my flight line, and sheshould on yours too. I don't believe in giving 10/10 as it impliesthat you have reached the pinnacle and it can't be improvedupon. Given how fast this developer is pushing boundaries every time anew product comes out means I cannot give it a 10/10 but I can give itas close as you can get to that. Overall score: 9.9/10. /images/reviews/heavmust/title3.jpgDale Ashcroft Please check out my YouTube channel @ In-Flightsim - YouTube Purchase Aeroplane Heaven - P-51D Mustang for MSFS 2020 See other Aeroplane Heaven aircraft for MSFS 2020

Originally designed as part of a proposal to design acompletely new fighter from ground up the P51 saw a number of rolesduring the second world war and in fact well into the 50’s and theadvent of the jet age. The P-51 was not without its problems. In particular the earlierversion suffered from a problem with vision especially to the rear anda lackluster performance. This was remedied with a bubble canopy andthe addition of the Merlin engine. First seeing action with the RAF, the American armed forces were totake up the majority of the use during latter stages of WW2. Merlinpowered Mustangs were to start their first of many missions to escortlong range bombers in mid-December 1943. The P-51D’s were to provesuperior to the premier German fighters of the time, the Me-109 andthe Fw-190. About 13,000 Merlin powered Mustangs were produced in the UnitedStates. They continued to serve past WW2's end and some were even usedin a ground attack role during the Korean War. They last saw combat inthe 1969 "Soccer War". Now they can be found either in racing guise oras highly restored examples at airshows throughout the world. /images/notams/notams22/heav0508/p51d-2.jpgInnovative FeaturesAll new hi-fidelity models with superb detail including gun bays and gear wellsBeautifully crafted exterior and interior models built over contemporary detailed plans and drawingsAuthentic cockpit detail includes many bespoke animations and effectsFull PBR materials and textures include realistic "pillowing" of metal surfacesAnimated authentic U.S. military pilot figure + your choice to remove for asobo stock pilotSpecially animated, realistic undercarriage operation and the famous hydraulic droopChoice of classic or modern radiosHighly accurate flight dynamics and performance based on real flight testsSpecially authored WWise Hi-Fidelity sound packageUnique code to "iron" out poor simulator tail-dragger performanceLoadouts and external tanks based on weight /images/notams/notams22/heav0508/p51d-3.jpg18 Authentic LiveriesThe package includes a variety of colorful liveries from WW2 fighter squadrons and 3 civilian registered versions. /images/notams/notams22/heav0508/p51d-4.jpgPurchase Aeroplane Heaven - North American P-51D Mustang For MSFS v1.2.0 See other Aeroplane Heaven products -
/images/notams/notams22/auth0416.jpgIt's finally finished after so many months of development. There'sa lot of functionality packed into this one flight control unit whichmeans it has no less than 5 input sockets in order to support. Fully articulated land gear lever with hydraulic damping for a great tactile feelElevator trim wheelRudder trim wheelAileron trim wheelFlaps lever with 6 separate detent positions: 0, 10, 20,30, 40 and 50 degrees of flaps. All with adjustable friction and a mounting system to put everything in just the right placeAs usual it is completely to scale with just minor modifications todimensions. The only real omission is in the air section as thehot/ram air levers are missing from this version 1. As it is to scale the most striking thing about this control is thesize – as you can see below it’s a chunky piece of kit! 1:1 Sync With Real World/Sim Trim Wheel RotationBy combining this flight control with the AuthentiKit tuning appyou can achieve perfect synchronisation between the movement of yourtrim wheel and the movement in sim. Hello everyone I have been following this forum for quite a while and appreciate the sharing of information to keep our hobby flying. I retired 2 years ago and we moved from Ohio to Florida since we were tired of the Midwest winters. We do have heat and humidity in Fla and severe storms are a possibility but I don't miss shoveling snow. I thought I would share what I have been working on for the last year. I will mainly use this for FSX but I do own DCS. I put EVERYTHING in the pit today for a final check. This is the first time it has all been in the pit at one time and it felt really cool! I did find 3 things that I need to correct but that was the purpose of this test. My wife has seen it in parts and pieces so I brought her out for a look and even got her in the pit! She has been a great supporter of this project. Probably to keep me out of the house! I still need to add the labels, run all of the wiring, do some final painting like the white area under the dash and install the skin but it feels like I am finally getting closer to completion. Take care and have a safe Memorial Day weekend. Ed

/images/notams/notams18/a2a0831/a2a0831.jpgIn theirforumsA2A Simulations has announced the release of the Accu-Sim P-51Mustang in separate civilian and military versionsfor Prepar3D v4. They describe the Mustang as follows: The Accu-Sim P-51 Mustang is here finally in its P3Dv4guise. Back in 2004, we released a P-51D for Microsoft FlightSimulator 9 that used a flight modelling process known as ¡°AbsoluteRealism.¡± A lot of characteristics were being experienced for thefirst time in flight simulation. If you flew flight simulators, youwere used to the old ¡°yank and bank¡± as most flight simmers held theposition that aircraft really didn¡¯t spin. This was largely because, back then, developers were largely programmers, with no flyingexperience. Even today, while it¡¯s getting more common, it¡¯s stillrare to find a developer who actually has even taken the controls of areal aircraft. /images/notams/notams18/a2a0831/military-1.jpgToday, A2A has the wind at our back, with Accu-Sim helping to bringserious aviators and simulation together. However, the industry as awhole hasn¡¯t really budged that much as people are discovering thatit¡¯s not enough to be a pilot, or even a highly experienced pilot. Ittakes an entirely different skill set to be able to observe, translate, and re-create the experience. It¡¯s not being a pilot, aeronautical engineer, or even a highly skilled aircraft modeller thatmakes the difference. It¡¯s the combination of "all the above" with, perhaps most importantly, a relentless drive to re-create the mostbelievable experience possible. /images/notams/notams18/a2a0831/military-2.jpgEven if you have never flown an aircraft before, you as a livingperson with an inherently deep sense of what is right or wrong in thephysical world you live in. You touch things, see things, and hearthings every minute of every day. So trust your instincts, because, ifit doesn¡¯t feel or sound right to you, it probably isn¡¯t right. Also,in the real world, actions create lasting results, both good andbad. There are consequences everywhere inside of a cockpit, especiallya high performance, propeller-powered, combustion drivenaircraft. /images/notams/notams18/a2a0831/civilian-1.jpgThis is where the persistent aircraft makes all the difference. Inthe real world, you don¡¯t get a fresh new aircraft every time youstrap yourself into the cockpit. The aircraft is a physical machinethat exists in the world. If your aircraft was pulling to the rightwhen you parked it, it will still be pulling when you taxi to therunway the next day. When things happen in a simulated world as youexpect in the real world, you start to treat it as if it is just that, real. With lasting results, wrapped inside the newest modelling andadvanced material-making techniques, you will have an aircraft thatyou can spend not just minutes, but hours admiring. /images/notams/notams18/a2a0831/civilian-2.jpgTogether, with professionally recorded sounds and physics, the endresult is the sense of having a complete, real, majestic, raw, flyingmachine stuffed inside your computer. And we hope, you don¡¯t justtreat it like any aircraft, but rather like "your" aircraft. We hopeyou enjoy your new beautiful bird, and hope you learn to fly and treather well.
