Descent Planning Made Easy - NO VNAV or Calculator Required By thecorporatepilotdad Two methods used in descent planning are demonstrated. The first method is extremely simple and shows when to start the descent based on time. Method 2 shows when to start the descent based on distance and what rate of descent is required. VNAV makes descent planning easy, but for jets like the FlySimware Lear 35, there is no FMS, and no VNAV. Descent planning is easy without VNAV, and after watching this video, you will be able to plan a descent without the aid of VNAV. One thing to consider when descending is true airspeed (TAS). TAS will drop significantly from cruise altitude to altitudes below 10,000 feet (in a jet). Will descent rate stay the same during the descent or will it change? A combination of methods 1 and 2 will make descent planning easy. The simple math for both methods are shown at the end of the video. VOR Navigation: VOR Basics, Radials, Triangulation, Reverse Sensing, and DME By thecorporatepilotdad A tutorial made by a professional pilot and former CFI to cover the basics of VOR navigation. How to use a VOR can be quite confusing to student pilots. VORs are not difficult, and this video's intent is to make VOR navigation easy with visual presentations and then flying the presentation in Microsoft Flight Simulator and covering the basics of VOR navigation. The video will start with by explaining the parts of the VOR indicator instrument then by explaining a VOR, how to find them, and how they work. How to TUNE and IDENTIFY a VOR using Morse code is demonstrated and shown in the video. VORs can be used to fly to a VOR from the present position, a desired course to or from the VOR, or a second VOR can be used to locate the aircraft's position. Radials, VOR instrument indicators, DME, Reverse Sensing, Chart Supplement, and the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, and the Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards (ACS) are demonstrated and shown. DME is not always accurate due to slant rage. This concept is visualized and demonstrated. VORs can reverse sense. This phenomenon is shown as well as how to recognize reverse sensing and how to fix it. Sectionals used in the video are from VFRMap.com The top-down image of the Piper Arrow is from JustFlight Piper Arrow add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator http://justflight.com About the creator of this video: ATP rated 8,000+ hour corporate pilot and former CFI who enjoys making YouTube videos as a hobby along with using A.I. to make thumbnails for videos. How To Land an Airplane in Crosswinds, Forward and Side Slips By thecorporatepilotdad Landing an airplane is by far one of the most difficult tasks when learning to fly. As a professional pilot and former CFI with nearly 2,000 hours of dual instruction given, this breakdown of how to land an airplane shows intentional slips, roundout/flare, and touchdown. Crosswind corrections are shown with a crosswind from the right throughout the video. The crab method, side slip, and forward slips are demonstrated to show how to counteract the effects of a crosswind, along with how to lose altitude without increasing airspeed. Due to a sim issue, the flaps became stuck which brought up a situation for learning. Considerations are discussed in the event of the same situation happening while flying in real life. Regular FlightSim.Com contributor thecorporatepilotdad announces a new podcast. Join Rob and Tim, both professional corporate jet pilots from either side of the US/Canada border, as they discuss aviation industry related topics, promote pilot mentorship, reach out to new prospective pilots and have fun doing their show. They have a new logo thanks to Serge at The Pilot Club and new episodes have gone up every two weeks. Rob and Tim are trying very hard to get an episode published on a bi-monthly basis. In addition to normal topics, there is an ATC Tip given by a real-world ATCer along with an aviation market update and airplane buying tips by McGill Aviation who is an aircraft broker. One episode did cover MSFS in a segment, and they do bring up flight sims once in a while because Rob and Tim both are flight sim nerds. "Checkrides, Challengers, and Coffee" is the latest episode. They both talk about failing checkrides and that it isn't the end of the world when that happens. They also give several tips for taking a checkride based on their experience of taking multiple checkrides throughout the year and for all the ratings up through ATP. You can find the podcast here.

Tutorial: Maneuvering During Slow Flight -- Common Mistakes
Nels_Anderson posted an article in Featured
Maneuvering During Slow Flight -- Common Mistakes By thecorporatepilotdad If you've ever heard the phrase "pitch for airspeed, power for altitude", this is where this concept is learned and applied for takeoff and landing as well as go-arounds and missed approaches. Learn the ins and outs of maneuvering during slow flight in this next video in my Learn To Fly Here series. Slow flight teaches airspeed control that must be learned in order to become a licensed pilot. Airspeed control is essential in the traffic pattern during landings, go-arounds, and during takeoff and climb out. As a former flight instructor with nearly 2,000 hours of dual flight instruction given, slow flight is one of the most important maneuvers that needs to be done correctly and well in order to have superior airspeed control. Maneuvering during slow flight is demonstrated in Microsoft Flight Simulator with the default Cessna 172. Tips and common errors are given and the FAA Airplane Flying Handbook is used as reference along with the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) which is formerly known as the Practical Test Standards (PTS). This video is intended as entertainment and is NOT meant to replace instruction from an appropriately qualified flight instructor. thecorporatepilotdad Youtube channel The Corporate Pilot Guys Podcast About The Author This video is produced by thecorporatepilotdad. Go-Around and missed approach procedures in the Citation Longitude are demonstrated in Microsoft Flight Simulator. The decision to do a go-around or a missed approach can vary based on many different factors. Procedures are the same regardless of the factor for doing a go-around or missed approach. Learn what 6 important tasks happen when the TOGA button is pressed. One important step in doing a go-around after the application of max power, is pressing the Takeoff and Go-Around or TO/GA button. Pressing the TOGA button in the Longitude accomplishes 6 tasks, one of which is adjusting the flight director to a climb attitude, but one very important and sometimes frustrating event happens that almost everyone has probably missed at some point and wondered "What is going on with the FMS?" After reading and following the missed approach procedure, checklist guidance and questions regarding the hold and what to do while in the hold are discussed. This is part 4 of the Longitude series. This tutorial covers how to do an ILS approach with the aid of VNAV in the newly updated TBM 930 in the Avionics and Aircraft Update in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Not shown in the video is selecting VNAV on the MFD menu and enabling VNAV. Be sure to do this to get VNAV to work. Vertical Navigation data comes from the G3000 and will be used up to the final approach fix. After that, the glide slope is used to fly the glide slope portion of ILS approach to the runway. Vertical and lateral flight modes are also discussed in detail along with how to go direct to a point after the IAF is selected. "Ghost needles", altitude selection, and even how to check the weather at the destination is shown. thecorporatepilotdad Youtube channel The Corporate Pilot Guys Podcast About The Author This video is produced by thecorporatepilotdad. As a Professional Pilot and an actual user of the Proline 21 and FMS 3000 in the real world, it's great to be able to demonstrate the exact same avionics in the Citation CJ4 in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Following the Aircraft and Avionics Update (AAU1) in Microsoft Flight Simulator, this video shows how to program the FMS with a departure procedure, enroute structure, arrival, and selecting a runway. Even the dreaded discontinuity will be covered. When should a DISCONTINUITY be deleted, and when should one be kept in place? Takeoff performance is also entered in the FMS and methods are entering pertinent weather information is also shown. thecorporatepilotdad Youtube channel The Corporate Pilot Guys Podcast About The Author This video is produced by thecorporatepilotdad. thecorporatepilotdad presents a new tutorial video for MSFS 2020 pilots. In this video, climb, cruise, and descent profiles and planning will be covered. As a Professional Pilot who has flown 400 series Twin Cessna aircraft for hundreds of hours, some real-world procedures are shown. How much fuel and time does it take to climb to various altitudes? That information will be given as well. Power settings for climb, cruise, and descent are shown. Cruise charts from 1,000 to 30,000' are shown. A brief explanation of setting power from the charts is given and actual performance versus charted performance is compared. Descent planning is simplified when it comes to power management. If looking for methods of planning when to start a descent to reach a desired altitude, that is NOT this video. Power management in the descent is simplified and the method shown will greatly reduce pilot workload and make flying the FlySimWare Cessna 414AW much easier by committing a few numbers to memory. RNAV Approach to LPV Minimums | Straight In + Circling Approach | FlySimWare Cessna 414AW By thecorporatepilotdad From entering the approach into the TDS GTNXi in the FlySimWare Cessna 414AW, to intercepting the final approach course and flying an RNAV approach to LPV minimums, the set up of the approach, approach briefing, and concepts covering speeds and power settings to be flown are shown. After the straight-in approach, approach categories and operations covering a circling approach are covered before flying the approach. Whether using the TDS Simulations GTNXi, GNS 430/530, or other GPS,the concepts of the RNAV/GPS approach remain the same once the approach is loaded. Tutorial: TDS Garmin GTNXi | Little Known [AWESOME] Features
Nels_Anderson posted an article in Featured
TDS Garmin GTNXi | Little Known [AWESOME] Features By thecorporatepilotdad The Garmin GTNXi by TDS Simulations is packed full of useful features for use in Microsoft Flight Simulator. This video features 3 little known features that I use quite often that may be helpful to others. 1. Loading an approach. Approaches with LPV minimums can be loaded into the GPS without navigating several menu screens. This method is a very fast way of entering an RNAV approach with LPV minimums. 2. Traffic Information. Did you know more information about nearby traffic can be discovered? 3. Missing airports or points of interest can be entered with"User Waypoints" with the aid of Google Earth or Google Maps. The Garmin GTN 750xi is shown, but this also works for the Garmin GTN 650xi by TDS. More information on the Garmin GTNXi for MSFS can be found athttps://www.tdssim.com/ thecorporatepilotdad Youtube channel The Corporate Pilot Guys Podcast About The Author This video is produced by thecorporatepilotdad.
