HS-748 ProplinerPublisher: Just FlightReview Author: Michael HaywardSuggested Price: $37.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.pngThe Hawker Siddeley HS-478 is atwin-prop airliner built between 1961 and 1988. Designed to be apotential replacement for the DC-3, a total of 380 were built until itwas developed into the British Aerospace ATP. Just Flight released their own rendition of the aircraft for bothFSX and P3D in mid-2017 and in this review, I will be looking at whatthis aircraft has to offer, as well as whether this aircraft would bea good addition for your virtual hangar. /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113023528_1.jpgAircraft SpecificationTwo pilots and 40-58 passengersLength: 67 ft 0 in (20.42 m)Wingspan: 102 ft 5 1/2 in (31.23 m)Height: 24 ft 10 in (7.57 m)Empty Weight: 27,126 lb (12,327 kg)Maximum Takeoff Weight: 46,500 lb (21,092 kg)Powerplant: 2 Rolls-Royce Dart RDa.7 Mk 536-2 turbopropAircraft PerformanceRange: 1,066 miles (926 nm, 1,715 km) Service Ceiling: 25,000 ft (7,620 m)Max Cruising Speed: 281 mph (244 knots, 452 km/h)Download And InstallInstalling this aircraft is the same easy process as with any JustFlight aircraft. When purchasing the aircraft from the FSPilotShop, download the zip file and extract the installer. When running theinstaller, simply select whether you use FSX or Prepar3D, accept thelicense and input the key provided to you. The aircraft then installsinto Flight Simulator and it's ready to use. /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20171127010536_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113015240_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113015329_1.jpgA 46 page PDF manual is also included with this add-on. It is fullof facts about the aircraft and contains a tutorial on how to operateit. Exterior ModelTextures are all at 2K resolution which for this model is more thanenough to show off the high detailing this aircraft exhibits. Bumpmapping also allows for smaller details to be clear such as panel gapsand bolts across the body. This on top of the high-quality modelgives us an accurate representation of the aircraft, and it does lookvery good! The Hawker Siddeley was built to operate on rugged terrain, whichmeant the aircraft had to have thicker wing roots and stronger landinggear - both of which Just Flight have taken into account. From apurely external viewpoint, the aircraft looks highly authentic. Animations on the model include all doors and hatches, all animatedflight surfaces and extending fowler flaps. A feature of the Hawker Siddeley 748 was that the propellers weremounted above the wing rather than below. /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113015507_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113015515_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113015933_1.jpgOne small glitch I noticed however, was that the shadow mapping wasslightly out of place. The rear portion of the aircraft (when itcomes to shadows) seems to split and appear on the opposite side ofthe aircraft (at least on my review system), and this is something Iwould like to see patched in future. There are a total of 16 liveries included with this add-on and theyare as follows: Air CreebecAir Creebec CargoCivil Aviation AuthorityAir NorthDLTFirst AirEmerald AirwaysParcelforceDan-Air LondonRyanairBahamasairOmega ExpressBritish Airways - LandorBritish Airways - red tailSkyways of LondonMount Cook /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113022305_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113022707_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113022751_1.jpgCockpit And InteriorThe Just Flight model of the Hawker Siddeley includes a faithfulreproduction of the real aircraft's cockpit. All of the gauges andswitches are in their correct locations, and 2K resolution texturesmean that even the smallest of details are visible, and text is clearto read. Weathering has also been applied to these textures, which ishighly realistic, especially when you consider the life some of theseaircraft have had, plus the fact that a few are almost 60 yearsold! All cockpit switches and gauges are 3D and have a degree of depthto them, adding an extra layer of realism to the aircraft. This isalso very effective on gauges like the artificial horizon whichappears to work like the real aircraft. Each switch and dial has also been animated so as to correspondwith their current state. The switches flick between the on and offpositions and dials can be dragged to a number of positions, givingthe impression of different modes. For example, on the GPS, you candrag the main power switch and leave it in a number of positions andmodes. Night lighting within the cockpit is also impressive, with a reddome lighting up the cockpit, and panel lights shining behind each ofthe gauges - all of which makes the HS-478 a charm to fly atnight. /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113022817_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113022839_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113023012_1.jpgButtons, Gauges And FunctionalityAs with the majority of Just Flight aircraft, it may not be highfidelity, but most of the switches that the aircraft includes arefunctional. The Hawker Siddeley, being an older aircraft, includes a Sperrygyroscopic autopilot, which is accessible below the throttle quadrant. There is also a rather old-fashioned airspeed indicator included, which can take a bit of time getting used to. As mentioned before, this is not a high fidelity model, meaning notall features and switches will work - an example being the weatherradar. However, at least Just Flight (on this occasion) didn't use afake weather radar like they did on their DC-8 model! Just Flight have decided not to include a 2D panel, but I would notsee this as being short-sighted, as the virtual cockpit is both clearand easy to follow - even for the oldest of flight sim pilots. SoundJust Flight have recorded real sound samples from the HawkerSiddeley 748, which makes this model a joy to listen to. For a number of developers, placeholder or similar sounds can beused within their add-ons if they cannot source the correct samples, but as is the norm with Just Flight aircraft, they have used a thirdparty company to provide the sounds, in this case, Skysong Soundworks.Samples are of a high quality and sound loops are well defined with noobvious cuts. /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113023020_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113023324_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113024156_1.jpgFlight DynamicsOne thing I noticed about this model, is that it does like to flylevel! When banking to make a turn, letting go of the yoke will causethe aircraft (fairly quickly) to return to level flight. While thisis common for many aircraft, this is very apparent on the HawkerSiddeley, and makes it fairly easy to fly. When it comes to aircraft limitations, the aircraft will cruise at25,000 feet before struggling to go any higher. Maximum speed is around244 knots, with the over-speed alarm sounding soon after that. Taking off and landing the Hawker Siddeley is also easy to achieve, giving good control/feedback over each phase. Trimming is alsosimple, especially as the aircraft likes to fly level! Bank theaircraft or pitch it up or down, the aircraft will slowly level itselfout with minimal input from the user. Flying the HS-478 is a charmand very simple to achieve. Opinion And Closing RemarksOverall, I've have had a lot of fun with the HS-748. As a classicBritish propeller aircraft, the Just Flight model does it proud, especially in regards to its exterior modelling and weatheredcockpit. The overall balance Just Flight have managed to achieve (modellingdetail, sound samples and flight dynamics) provides us with ahigh-quality add-on - one which gives a faithful recreation of thereal aircraft. /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113023624_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113024026_1.jpg /images/reviews/hs748jf/t/20180113024144_1.jpgAs previously mentioned, the aircraft is easy to fly and one I havevery much enjoyed getting to know. There is a slight frame rate hitwhen viewing the virtual cockpit, but on higher end systems, thisshould be of no concern. Whilst this may not be for the person who longs for high fidelityor modern aircraft models, it is more than suitable for the simmer whoenjoys a more relaxed flight style, or one who simply prefers flyingclassic propeller aircraft. If that's you, then the Just FlightHawker Siddeley HS-478 is a good choice for your next flight simpurchase.
