/images/notams/notams19/canx0705.jpgOn July 20th, 1969 which is 50 years ago this month, Neil Armstrongand Buzz Aldrin went where no one man has gone before, becoming thefirst humans to land and walk on a foreign spatial body. MichaelCollins flew the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit whilethey were on the Moon's surface. Collins is the one person that most people forget about as he madehistory that day becoming the first solo crew of a spacecraft outsideof Earth orbit for 21 hours while Armstrong and Aldrin were on thelunar surface. Apollo 11 was launched by a Saturn V rocket from Kennedy SpaceCenter on Merritt Island, Florida, on July 16 at 13:32 UTC and was thefifth crewed mission of NASA's Apollo program. The Apollo spacecrafthad three parts: a command module (CM) with a cabin for the threeastronauts which is the only part that returned to Earth. The servicemodule (SM) which supported the command module with propulsion, electrical power, oxygen, and water and of course the lunar module(LM) that had two stages, descent stage for landing on theMoon, and an ascent stage to place the astronauts back into lunarorbit. This month, we trace a route these astronauts and theirpredecessors followed during their travels to reach themoon. Traveling from Houston Texas (KIAH) to what was known at thetime as Cape Canaveral Space Center (KORL).
