Aviation History - Flying To the Busiest Airport in the 1920s and 1930s. By thecorporatepilotdad A look back at aeronautical charts from the late 1920s and early 1930s. What would it be like flying to the busiest airport in the world in 1930? Charts and bulletins a pilot would have used to lookup information on an airport as part of their preflight planning is shown. In this video, the area where Merrill C. Meigs airport would be located is shown before it was built or even before it had the proper name the former airport is known as today. In the video, proposed lake front airport (Meigs) is referred to as a landfill in 1927. This is not "landfill" in terms of what is known by the term landfill in terms of a storage area for garbage, but simply creating the peninsula of land in the water where the airport would be created. The airway bulletin is from 1927 and the aeronautical chart is from 1930. thecorporatepilotdad Youtube channel About The Author This video is produced by thecorporatepilotdad. /images/notams/notams21/drze1228/drze1228.jpgMidway International Airport (IATA: MDW, ICAO: KMDW, FAA LID: MDW)is a major commercial airport on the southwest side of Chicago,Illinois, located eight miles (13 km) from the Loop. Established in1927, Midway served as Chicago's primary airport until the opening ofO'Hare International Airport in 1955. Today, Midway is thesecond-largest airport in the Chicago metropolitan area and the stateof Illinois. Traffic is currently dominated by low-cost carrierSouthwest Airlines; Chicago is Southwest's largest focus city. /images/notams/notams21/drze1228/kmdw-1.jpgMidway is a base for Southwest Airlines, which carries over 95% ofthe passengers at the airport. The airport's current name is in honorof the Battle of Midway. The Battle of Midway was a major naval battlein the Pacific Theater of World War II that took place on 4-7 June1942, six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and one monthafter the Battle of the Coral Sea. The U.S. Navy under AdmiralsChester W. Nimitz, Frank J. Fletcher, and Raymond A. Spruance defeatedan attacking fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy under AdmiralsIsoroku Yamamoto, Chūichi Nagumo, and Nobutake KondŠnear MidwayAtoll, inflicting devastating damage on the Japanese fleet. Militaryhistorian John Keegan called it "the most stunning and decisive blowin the history of naval warfare", while naval historian Craig Symondscalled it "one of the most consequential naval engagements in worldhistory, ranking alongside Salamis, Trafalgar, and Tsushima Strait, asboth tactically decisive and strategically influential". /images/notams/notams21/drze1228/kmdw-2.jpgThe now-defunct Midway Airlines that once serviced the airport tookits name from the airport, not vice versa. The airfield is located ina square mile bounded by 55th and 63rd Streets, and Central and CiceroAvenues. The current terminal complex was completed in 2001. Theterminal bridges Cicero Avenue and contains 43 gates with facilitiesfor international passengers. The Stevenson Expressway (I-55) runsadjacent to the airport, heading northeast to Downtown Chicago andsouthwest to various suburbs. The CTA rapid transit Orange Lineprovides transit to Downtown Chicago where it connects with othersubway/elevated rapid transit lines. /images/notams/notams21/drze1228/kmdw-3.jpgChicago Midway International Airport covers just over one squaremile (650 acres or 260 hectares) and has five runways. Midway issurrounded by buildings and other development, so the landingthresholds of the runways are displaced to provide obstacleclearance. The FAA and the airlines ensure safety by adhering tocalculated load limits and various weather minimums. Because of thedisplaced landing thresholds, the runways have shorter distancesavailable for landings than for takeoffs. 13C/31C, the longest runway, only has an available landing distance of 6,059 feet (1,847 m) in thesoutheast direction, and 5,826 feet (1,776 m) to the northwest. Thelargest aircraft normally seen at Midway is the Boeing 757. Normally, commercial planes only take off from and land on runways 4R/22L and13C/31C. The other runways are used by smaller aircraft and, per theUS FAA Chart Supplement are restricted from use by large commercialaircraft except in emergency. /images/notams/notams21/drze1228/kmdw-4.jpgFeaturesA high quality model of KMDW Chicago Midway, featuring the up-to-date version with extensive details throughout the whole airportFPS-friendly design, with epic night textures, dynamic lighting and PBR materialsHigh definition mesh including exact runway profilePerformance-friendly interior modeling at all terminal buildings, most hangars and the control tower, static aircraft, custom animations, custom animated jetwaysFully compatible with Chicago Landmarks MSFS by Drzewiecki DesignPurchase Drzewiecki Design - KMDW Chicago Midway MSFS See other Drzewiecki Design scenery
