Designed by R.S.Johnson in 1940, the Swift’s birth is not without its complexities. With the intervention of WW2, the design did not actually reach certification until May, 1946 when it had been the subject of several design modifications carried out by K.H. “Bud†Knox. In the late 40’s Globe was to become insolvent and Temco acquired the type certificate and went on to build further aircraft. Full production ceased in 1951 but spare parts and service items continued to be produced by Universal Aircraft Industries until 1979. This model is based on the original “A†version. /images/notams/notams19/vats0414.pngVATSIM is pleased to share that after nearly 6 years ofdevelopment, the swift Development Team have announcedthat their new pilot client has reached the phase of public beta. What Is Swift?Swift is a brand new pilot client supported by VATSIM. It iscompatible with all the major flight simulator platforms includingMicrosoft Flight Simulator, Lockheed Martin Prepar3D, X-Plane as wellas FlightGear. swift can be used on Windows, MacOS and Linux. swift isthe only approved VATSIM client to connect to all supported simulatorson nearly all commonly used operating systems. The user experience is common across all platforms and although theset-up and operation of the client requires a little reading of theinstruction manual, the result is a very powerful client. Swift is not only a pilot client but is delivered together with anonline database storing detailed information about all possible AI andflyable models, liveries, aircraft types and airports. With thisinformation in the background, swift is able to optimize the modelmatching, but also help you to fill in the correct details usingauto-completion in all UI widgets. No more wrong aircraft types orwrong airport identifiers on the network. Swift has developed a protocol extension - together with vPilot -to exchange the aircraft parts information between the pilotclients. This feature, already available in vPilot, allows to renderaircraft properly taxiing on the ground and also synchronize lights, flaps and gear animation. With swift, this feature can now be usedacross all simulators. Swift is the first VATSIM client that is fully open source - apartfrom a small library necessary to keep the VATSIM authenticationsecure. Take a tour throughhttps://dev.swift-project.orgif you are interested and contribute bug fixes and features on yourown. It is a reality of our hobby that people's real life commitmentsprevent them from participating indefinitely. Other clients havesuffered for this in the past. The swift team hope that opening theirsource code will mean that swift can live on long after they are gone, and be truly owned by our community. What Is The Public Beta?Alpha testers have reported very positive experiences using swift, but some bugs, missing or incomplete features, and un-intuitiveinterfaces are still to be expected at this stage. The swift team arerelying on feedback from the community to help them to fix the bugsand smooth out the user interface. Is Swift A Replacement For Other Pilot Clients?Swift is not intended to replace other pilot clients; it is simplyan alternative option. vPilot and xSquawkbox continue to be activelydeveloped and improved. It is up to each user to decide which clientthey prefer. How Do I Try It?Visithttp://swift-project.orgwhere documentation and download links are available. I Need Help With Getting StartedThere are a number of outlets for you to seek support, including atthe VATSIM forums. Check outhttp://swift-project.orgwhich has links to all these. Source
