/images/notams/notams20/maps0210/maps0210.jpgHere is some news from scenery developer Maps2XPlane abouttheir Seychelles4XPlane package. In this this post thedeveloper goes into detail about the additional thirteen airfieldsavailable in the scenery - the two main airports in the scenery areSeychelles International Airport and Praslin Island Airport: After informing you in the previous posting about the two largestairports – the Seychelles International Airport and the regionalPraslin Island Airport – let's today have a closer look at thethirteen additional airfields which will be included in theSeychelles4XPlane scenery package: The thirteen additional landing sites are spread over the smallerislands of the Seychelles archipelago and are usually very small andshort, and embedded in dense tropical vegetation. Four of them aregrass airstrips. So dear virtual pilots: Be prepared for challengingapproaches, and expect to be rewarded by stunning and scenic locations– island hopping at its best. /images/notams/notams20/maps0210/island-hopping.jpgIRL most of the islands are served by the Island DevelopmentCompany. IDC was incorporated in 1980, to create a structure to enablethe economy of the outer islands to be developed. Only selectedislands are dedicated for tourism, and can be reached either byscheduled Air Seychelles flights, or charters operated by Zil Air, alocal provider of helicopter and fixed-wing flights. Expect untouched nature, stunning atolls and lagoons, densetropical vegetation, and here and there a few signs ofcivilization. That means for our Seychelles rendition for X-Plane:photorealistic terrain mesh paired with custom 3D vegetation, customgeneric autogen, and custom dynamic traffic on land and on thesea. Last but not least: Selected islands, hosting IRL hotels andresorts, received also some extras: We populate them with customobjects and buildings, based on real counter-parts. /images/notams/notams20/maps0210/custom-buildings.jpgSource

Interview With Matthias Seewald From Maps2XPlane Conducted by Dominic Smith Matthias, could you tell us about Maps2XPlane, the team members and their roles? Maps2XPlane was founded by myself, Matthias Seewald and Nino Villari, in April of 2015. The original idea came from Nino as he wanted to bring the stark but beautiful continent of Antarctica to X-Plane, which, at that time, had been absent from X-Plane. A few days later, Paolo Grifantini joined the team and two became three! Paolo focuses on developing the airstrips plus the numerous base station sceneries located around the continent. I focus on pre-processing geographical grid and vector data, plus generating the mesh. Nino supports us by giving us creative ideas (really helps motivate us) as well as creating useful contacts in the scientific community. Because of his passion for the project, Nino is also our first beta tester. Why did you choose Antarctica as the basis of your project? The primary reason for choosing this region was due to the fact that it was missing from the X-Plane world. The three of us have always been fascinated by the numerous stories surrounding Antarctica. Legendary explorers such as Shackleton, Amundsen and Scott are a tribute to the beauty and dangers this incredible land offers. X-Plane's default scenery has never included Antarctica, so how did you go about locating the necessary scenery data? This was one of the most challenging aspects of the project. One of the reasons was because of the lack of suitable elevation datasets covering the whole of Antarctica. Finding a single source which covered the entire continent, and in a resolution suitable, was practically impossible. To solve this issue, we ended up resampling and merging data from different sources so as to create the elevation data needed. If that wasn't hard enough, we then had to correct the topography and outlines of many of the regions by hand. An example of this is the 'small hill' on which Matienzo Base is located. Matthias, what was the biggest challenge you faced in the making of the mesh? Well, not only did we have the problem of sourcing the grid and vector data (as previously mentioned), we also had the problem of finding the right tools to create mesh in the first place. We were unable to use Laminar Research's MeshTool or their internal tool, RenderFarm, because both of these programs rely on 'landuse data' (none suitable for Antarctica). The only option left was to design our own version of MeshTool, which I did. Apart from your own version of MeshTool, what other software packages do you use? Besides the scenery tools made available from Laminar Research, we also use tools like GDAL and SAGA. Along with our own version of MeshTool, these programs all work together, processing data from the NSIDC (National Snow and Ice Data Center) and OpenStreetMap. Do you plan on recreating the entire continent of Antarctica? We would love to do that but there is one big reason why we cannot, and that is...you cannot fly over the poles in X-Plane! Attempting to do so will cause the simulator to crash. However, in spite of this fact, there are still thousands upon thousands of square kilometres to explore. Your own personal Antarctic adventure is only a click away! How does Antarctica perform (in terms of FPS) compared to other custom sceneries? I think the best way to answer this question, is with a quote from one of our users: "...due to the absence of trees, roads and other autogen-objects in this area, one can really pump up the rendering settings, including extended DSF. At the same time, you can also fly in really bad weather conditions without collapsing your FPS. For me, this is a new experience in X-Plane...". Is there a particular aspect of the project you are most proud of? There are many aspects of this project that we're proud of. One is the fact that we (as a team) have managed to work through the numerous technical challenges posed to us at the beginning of this project. Finding solutions to these challenges meant that we were able to create something completely new for X-Plane and its community. Another aspect, and one that we're really excited about, is the fact that Nino has managed to gain the attention of some polar researchers based in the Antarctic. Are we about to see the first flight of X-Plane below the Antarctic Circle? Who knows? Amazing! Are you able tell us any more about these polar researchers, such as where they are located? Indeed, it's a really exciting development and one that occurred purely by chance. It all began when Nino attended a lecture held by a geologist at the University of Bologna. At the end of the lecture, Nino had the opportunity to talk to him about our X-Plane project. After speaking at length, the geologist referred Nino to a colleague of his, one stationed at Mario Zucchelli Base (Terra Nova Bay in Victoria Land - one of our next mesh parts). One thing led to another and the result was that Nino was invited to present our project to them. Both Nino and Paolo accepted the invitation and presented our work. The feedback we received back from the team was fantastic as they were impressed and amazed at the realism we had been able to create. We are still in contact with them so let's see where this fascinating relationship goes! Matthias, what aircraft do you recommend using to explore the beauty of Antarctica? Everybody has their own favourite but for me personally, I love AeroPedro's Twin Otter, especially when it's painted in Robert Maheu's 'British Antarctic Survey' livery. For those who enjoy flying something a little larger, Nino recommends the C-130H. When paired with the 'USAF 109th Airlift Wing' livery, it really does make for an authentic experience. Both the aircraft and the livery are again created by Robert Maheu. BTW: Bob (Robert) is working on more liveries - quid pro quo: more mesh parts, more liveries! Are the numerous base camps located around the continent modelled as well? In addition to the Antarctic Mesh, Paolo has prepared dozens of 'Research Base Station Sceneries'. These will be released to coincide with related mesh parts. For example, Part 1 of the mesh, which covers the South Orkney Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula, already includes four research base stations, with more following in the next few weeks. What can sites like FlightSim.Com do to support you and the hobby better? Well, FlightSim.Com could start a petition...'Please Austin, let us fly over the poles...!!' Only joking of course, because I know (as a software engineer) that this would be no easy task! Back to the question though. In my opinion, FlightSim.Com already does an important job for the flight simulation community. It not only gives individuals/teams a platform to publish and present their work, it also gives them a place where they can exchange ideas and experiences with fellow flight simulation enthusiasts. Matthias, finally, what would you like people to know most about Maps2XPlane? That Antarctica4XPlane is just the tip of the iceberg! In X-Plane's Global Scenery there are many regions that are missing or at least not particularly well formed. As a team we're thinking about some of the Subantarctic Islands, Northern Canada, Greenland, Svalbard plus others. Visit our web site to stay up to date.
