The airport terminals are located entirely in thesuburb of Dorval, while one runway is located in the Montreal boroughof Saint-Laurent. Air Canada, the country's flag carrier, also has itscorporate headquarters complex on the Saint-Laurent side of theairport. It also serves Greater Montreal and adjacent regions inQuebec and eastern Ontario, as well as the states of Vermont andnorthern New York in the United States. The airport is named in honorof Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the 15th Prime Minister of Canada andfather of current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. As with the previous successful release of Globall Art's CYYZscenery, I was really excited to see what Globall Art had come up withthis time around. With Montreal International being one of Canada'sbusiest airports, and relatively close to Toronto, I thought thiswould be the developers next release, and I'm happy to have beenright. /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-01.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-02.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-03.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-04.jpgBefore starting up X-Plane, I took a look at the documentation anddeveloper notes. Globall Art's CYUL scenery is available for bothX-Plane 10 and 11. I really like this feature, as some of us still usethe older version of the sim as it's less demanding on hardware. Oncedownloaded and extracted, you will find four different folderscontaining airport scenery, custom mesh, documentation, and optionalwinter textures for winter flying. I first checked out the documentsfolder and read the well written installation manual (the folder alsoincludes CYUL aeronautical charts). Once I followed the installprocedure, the sim was ready to be loaded. Overall, I found it reallyeasy to install the scenery, as the instructions were very well laidout. Compared to Global Art's CYYZ, this one felt more organized andeasier to install. Wiith the installation completed, I was now ready to view thescenery. I loaded up the sim, and found a gate to start from. I tookan initial quick look around to see if there were any largeimperfections, or anything that looked out of place - there were none! All buildings, vegetation, and static elements fitted nicely, and thegeneral feeling was that of authenticity. /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-09.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-10.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-11.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-12.jpgNext, I took a closer look at the ground textures which were madeout of orthophotos (airport area only). Personally, I would've likedthe orthophotos to extend a little further from the airport, especially on the northwest side of the airfield as it is anoticeable change when they end and default textures take over. Apartfrom that the textures are great, and have good resolution andclarity. Next, I looked at the taxiways and asphalt areas. In much thesame way as the previously released CYYZ scenery, CYUL features customtaxiways and taxiway markings. The added grunge and weathered markingsare very realistic, and help give the impression that the airport isused. Compared to the older CYYZ scenery, this package has a higheramount of detail in the groundwork. Apart from the taxiways, thereisn't a great deal of asphalt modeled. In future updates, I wouldreally like to see the developer make the surrounding parkinglots/roads of a higher detail, especially if they happen to be rightbeside a taxiway or high use area. This would greatly add to the senseof realism, as you would be viewing these areas up close. /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-13.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-14.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-15.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-16.jpgNext, I moved onto vegetation, and it was interesting to see thatthis scenery does not feature 3D grass around the airfield (helpful ifyou have low end hardware). However, many other areas aremodeled. When it comes to trees, there are some situated around theairfield, as well as some just north, but I couldn't help but thinkthere should be a few more in certain places. To help with customplacement, there were exclusion zones in place where default treeswould have been, but unfortunately I could still see a few pokingthrough. Overall, the vegetation is not spectacular, but looks goodenough when flying in on approach. After taking a look at the vegetation, I focused on the buildingsand custom 3D elements. On my first tour of the scenery, I noticedthat a few of the warehouses and details surrounding the airport whereactually default X-Plane library objects. I was not expecting to seethis, especially as this was a payware scenery. However, all theairside buildings were custom made, and were modeled well. Textures ofthese though, were not as high as the earlier CYYZ scenery. This wasespecially noticeable when parked next to hangar doors. /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-17.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-18.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-19.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-20.jpgOne area which impressed me greatly though was the internationalterminal, as this was modeled extremely well. I really liked theamount of detail the developer has included, with the only let downbeing the textures (I felt they lacked realism). With high settingsturned on, the glass and terminal textures seemed blurry when parkedat the gate and viewed from the captain's seat. Overall though, Iliked how the buildings were modeled; I just would have appreciated abit more time and effort with the textures. Exploring even further, I was pleasantly surprised to see customground vehicles, and even more so when I saw the "mobile gates"traveling between the terminal and static aircraft. This aspect of thescenery was amazing, as it's a highly unique feature in X-Plane. Also, the deicing trucks work when you call a certain frequency which addsto the realism, especially on cold Canadian flights. As I have had the pleasure to review previous Globall Art sceneries,I had high expectations regarding the use of night lighting, as it'san area the developer excels at. And I was right, the lighting effectssimply blew me away! Hangars, terminals, and other airport structuresand elements all looked amazing. I'm happy to say that Globall Art haveoutdone themselves again in terms of night lighting. /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-21.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-22.jpgWith all the above done, I decided to have a look at the includedwinter textures, and again, these were incredibly authentic! It'sreally hard to get textures which look cold, but somehow the developerhas managed it, as you really do feel like it's -30 degrees whenflying in or out of the airport. The developer obviously took a lot oftime and care when developing the winter texture package, and as aCanadian, I'm really pleased he did! In regards to performance, the scenery excelled itself, and whencompared to Global Art's CYYZ, this scenery performs much better. Evenwith a low end PC, I was still able to achieve 30+ FPS, in and aroundthe airport. So if you have a low end PC capable of running X-Plane 10at reasonable settings, and you're worried about frame rates, don'tbe, as this scenery will work well even on low end computers (whilestill providing you with a realistic environment). /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-23.jpg /images/reviews/globcyul/t/globall-art-cyul-24.jpgIn summing up, I have come to the conclusion that in some respects,Globall Art's scenery of Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau InternationalAirport is better than their previous scenery of Toronto PearsonInternational Airport (CYYZ). The ground texturing and ground trafficplugin exceeded my expectations, and looks really good. The 3Dmodeling and texturing though, I found, was (in places), not as goodas the CYYZ scenery. However, I would still recommend purchasing thisscenery, as it contains a lot of unique features, and will definitelygive you an authentic experience of Montreal's Trudeau InternationalAirport. Overall I award the scenery a rating of 8/10. /images/reviews/globcyul/GLB-115-cyul-montreal-trudeau.jpgPatrick Putlend Purchase Globall Art - CYUL Montreal Trudeau Airport
