Where to install FSX

I am about to install FSX in Steam. Should I install it in the default C:\Program(X86)Steam or in D with a lot more space? If in D, do I need to give the file a specific name?

ANYWHERE YOU WANT **EXCEPT** PROGRAM FILES (either one.)

 

If you install to default location, you will not be able to modify the files to make customization later.

 

The more room you have, the more add-ons you can use.

My understanding is that you can modify the files, it's just more difficult to do so, but agreed don't put it in x86. Why all that security anyway, it's not like the Russian Mafia is itching to get at your flight sim?

The whole idea MS had behind the protected directories is not to protect against intrusion, but to protect the USER from HIMSELF and provide the developer some measure of source control on the user. If the program files were only those the developer released as tested and stable, the user is less likely to get themselves into trouble. This actually works. If FS was left as installed, it would continue to work as long as the OS and hardware it was installed on worked.

 

Forcing uninformed users to jump through hoops to damage their installation only helps a few people however.

Just create a folder under C:\ and name it Steam. So the path will be C:\Steam.

This is fine. The name of the directory will be taken care of by Steam.
