FS9 SP1 4GB Patch Win7x64 Professional - Installation Instructions

Recommended Posts

These instructions actually came via the Opa from Plano Texas, although, he provided them in pieces and over a period of time. Please feel free to add and adjust as needed.

One more important note. I'm using "C:\FS9" as the target installation folder for the installation instructions. The target can be any folder as long as it's outside of the "C:\Program Files" and outside of the "C:\Program Files (x86)" folders. Also, don't install to your Desktop or any of the Library sub-folders underneath it.

The install on my system is actually "C:\Flight Simulator 9".

01) No Need to ever run FS9 as administrator

02) No Need to ever run FS9 in compatibility mode

03) Disable Win7x64 Pro UAC (slider all the way down)

04) Create a clean FS9 Install to C:\FS9 using your Original FS9 CDROMs

(
SUPER IMPORTANT: DO NOT RUN FS9 UNTIL STEP 13
)

05) Create a clean FS9 SP1 install following these steps exactly...

a) Download fs91upd.exe from flyawaysimulation...

Flight Simulator 2004 Update v9.1

https://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/2795/flight-simulator-2004-update-v91/

c) Place the fs91upd.exe file in the C:\FS9 folder

d) Open an MS-DOS Window

e) In the MS-DOS Window, navigate to the C:\FS9 folder

f) In the MS-DOS Window, type fs91upd.exe and then press enter

g) Watch the update run and finish

h) Now check for a file named "C:\FS9\BACKUP\unpatch.bak"

if the file exists then success but please note that sometimes the file

does not get created and yet the update was still successful.

Match the file versions of your C:\FS9\Modules folder using the table at the end of this post

06) Make a backup copy of the current FS9.exe file somewhere safe

07) Download the NO-CD Patch from flyawaysimulation...

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 v9.1 No-CD Patch for FS2004

https://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/15244/microsoft-flight-simulator-2004-v91-no-cd-patch/

08) Copy the v9.1 No-CD Patch FS9.exe to your C:\FS9 folder overwriting the current file

09) Download the NTCore 4gb Patch from http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

10) Extract the 4gb_patch.exe program into the C:\FS9 folder

11) Run the 4gb_patch.exe program

12) Make a backup copy of the patched FS9.exe program somewhere safe

13) Now for the first time, RUN your shiny new copy of Flight Simulator 9.1 4GB Patched!

I would download any needed files first, although in the instructions, I've placed them in sequence for the sake of clarity.

Best Regards,

Mark

In case you need a listing of the FS9 Modules and their File Versions...

'1 Create a file named ModVer.vbs
'2 Copy the contents of this post into the file
'3 Save the ModVer.vbs to your C:\FS9\Modules folder
'4 Open a command prompt
'5 Navigate to the C:\FS9\Modules folder
'6 Type ModVer.vbs
'7 A list of all of the FS9 module versions along with their names will appear

Option Explicit

Dim FileSystem
Dim Folder
Dim File

Set FileSystem = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set Folder = FileSystem.GetFolder(".")

For Each File In Folder.Files
If LCase(FileSystem.GetExtensionName(File)) = "dll" then
	WScript.Echo FileSystem.GetFileVersion(File) & " " & File.Name
End if
Next

Hope this helps!

Following the procedure outlined you should not run FS until it is fully patched super important apparently. Most other times people recommend an immediate run of FS after installation to build the database before you apply the patch. Personally, I think it makes no difference when you install the patch but I am not certain. Reading things like it's super important to not run FS until after the patch is applied really makes me want to know why??? Anyone who can clarify and give reasons exactly why things should be done in a certain way. From my experience it doesn't seem to make a difference which way you do things.

There are times when the SP1 update would take a really long time to finish, if finish at all. Most issues arise when FS9 is not in it's original state and the update was applied. If you have the time, install FS9 and then run the program. Maybe even add some scenery or aircraft. Then, apply the SP1 update to the altered FS9.

Tell the group how long the update took and if it was successfull or not. But I think the easiest thing to do is to simply install FS9 as described as it is painless, efficient, and works really well.

I wasn't suggesting to install the patch to an FS already loaded with addons.

There are 2 apparent ways to install the patch to a "clean" FS install.

1. The method you outlined insists you MUST NOT run FS at all until the patch is installed.

2. The other argument is after FS is initially installed it should be run once to build it's database and then the patch should be run.

Two completely different methods of how to apply the patch to a "clean" install of FS.

As I stated, I don't think it makes a difference which method you use but would be curious to know why one method is apparently "Super Important"
