FSX Steam Edition is better than the old MS FSX

What is the deal on this, how it works, is a new program? It’s an add on to the FSX ? What you will recommend.

Dovetail Games bought FSX and are selling it through Steam, so you might as well buy it via download from Steam.

DG say they've made "a few tweaks that may improve performance of FSX for some users" and also made it multiplayer via Steam,

FSX is 8 years old now and we sometimes hear people asking "where can I buy it?", so by making it easily available on Steam, Dovetail will be introducing it to a whole new generation of flight simmers and that's bound to be good for the sim, giving it a new lease of life for years to come..

 

Here's what Dovetail themselves say-

“The main reason you would even consider picking up FSX: Steam Edition if you already have a significant FSX-O[riginal] setup is the implementation of Steam for multiplayer purposes.

That's the big single thing we've done is replaced GameSpy with Steam.

Yes, there have been a few tweaks made that may improve the performance of FSX for some users, but if you already have the simulator we're making no secret about the fact that at this point, what we're offering to you is limited.

The people we're hoping to attract first and foremost are those to whom FSX will be a brand new experience, rather than those who have already invested a great deal of time and energy into the hobby.

PS- I've got FSX on 7-year-old-disks and it runs fine, but if ever I lose the disks or they get chewed up by a pitbull or whatever, I'll simply buy FSX again on Steam..:)

Haha yes, there's a lot of blah blah all over the internet and it's almost impossible to get a simple straight answer to a simple question about anything, the geeky PC tech help forums are the worst..:)

Considering it's currently on offer for ~£4.99, it's a no brainer. New patches and no need for discs. I haven't found an addon that doesn't work with it yet, and I suspect those that don't are a result of the installer not finding the correct path for install rather than any inherent incompatibility.

There are a few people who seem resistant to the new-fangled Steam version of FSX.

 

Mostly because they don't want the intrusive Steam application on their computer, and also due to the mistaken belief that you need to be constantly connected to the internet to play it (not been the case since the last update a few months ago).

 

I think for what it adds (multiplayer, and better performance on my system) it is worth having, certainly for the current price!

I definitely think they reprogrammed the cod for FSX. I have not had one Fatal Error since I've been using it. It rocks!

I think they did not. You can still get virtual memory error, and rumours said that there are some issues with the payware/freeware addons which work on FSX but not on FSX ST.ED.

Dovetail's press release essentially nails the difference between the boxed edition and the the Steam edition.

 

I want to add that many of us also play many other games, most of them probably from Steam. I myself enjoy Team Fortress 2 and CounterStrike, and since all these games are run off Steam, it makes logical sense to add your favorite flight sim so that you can enjoy the benefits of a multiplayer system that you're already so familiar with (especially if you can get FSX:SE at a bargain price of $5 which Steam occasionally sales them down to)

 

I second Overlord's comment; I haven't had a single FSX:SE crash or error so far. No, it doesn't give you a 130% boost in performance over the boxed version, but for some reason it seems to run very smoothly.

 

(I also gotta love the Steam overlay when you press Shift + Tab)

Having the steam version is much better as you can download at any time to any machine you authorise with your steam account. For those worried about steam privacy etc you allow Microsoft to install windows updates dont you! whats the difference with installing steam.

I see Train Simulator is on Steam now, does that mean you can't use diesel engines? ;)
