i'm practicing flying around Yosemite park but the only way i have to get there at the moment is take off at some random airport, then go to the maps screen, enter Yosemite valley lat/long/alt and restart

it would be great to find a nice bit or flat land, or a road in the park and add an airstrip to it so i can select it in the startup screen.

is that possible? i don't want to add textures, buildings, anything like that, just spec location.

thanks

Photo-real is the hardest to make. Not a good place to start.

In the search box use the words:

scenery design started

There are also whole web sites devoted to the subject. Do some searches.

Here is a strip. Manzanita (6CL4). At 3021 ft. Strip is 1100 ft. Trees and 4000 ft hills all around it (should make it more fun!). There is a road south of strip (goes East and West). I got there on my Honda bike.

When you get there, SAVE a FLIGHT. Then you can return there by picking that saved flight whenever you want. Set the time of day, weather, and even the date and it will be saved with the saved flight. Want snow? You can do that. Want to go ski? That too. Have fun.

What you need is not creating photoreal scenery. You want to create an airport. You'll need ADE for that.

ADE is Airport Design Editor, a program with which you can create addon airports.

You can also use it to edit default airports. (Actually you leave the default intact, copy it, edit the copy, and then install that copy as if it was an addon airport. Addon airports override the default ones.)

Anyway, how to use it is for later on.

For now how to install.

The first steps are in that thread.

-ADE requires a program called the "SDK" (Software development kit).-

This is on the FSX deluxe disk (and there is an update for it on the acceleration disk). Only for people that don't have acceleration, is there a alternative download.

So, if you have deluxe+ accceleration installed --- use only the files from your disks.

If You have deluxe + SP1 + SP2 -- install The SDK from deluxe, then download and install the SDK updates 'SDKSP1' and 'SDK-SP2'.

You get the idea.

The SDK contains a number of utilities that can create special files that fsx can load, such as scenery files. One of them is used by ADE to create the files.

If you decide you want to be able to create your own airport anywhere, and edit any airport you want you will need ADE and the SDK installed.

If you decide to go this route, my advice would be: Install the SDK first and get it working.

Once it is fully installed there will be a new menu in the menu bar.

If at any point in the install you get stuck, don't hesitate to ask for help here. People will be glad to help with this, and it is much easier to help if you ask -before- you get in trouble.

For example, often after installing the menu does not appear at first. In that case, do not start uninstalling everything again. Often a small edit in one file will do the trick. Just ask.

Once you have the SDK working, install ADE (no explanation necessary on that) and away you go.

Here's a link to a thread with another brief explanation plus in it some good links.

https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?279503-FSX-ADE-Help!

The SDK is a case of read at least 20 times the wiki, and other info too. Then do it right first time. Slow and steady wins the race.

enjoy,

thanks for all the great info. actually, i just did it, didn't take long at all.

i downloaded ADE but i have the stream version of FSX only so i got the sdk free from here

http://www.prepar3d.com/support/sdk/ all you need to do is register to get it

then the docs on here are great

https://scruffyduck.screenstepslive.com/s/help_docs/m/20268/l/207757-how-do-i-add-a-new-airport

and now i have a new airport in the middle of yosemite valley called YOSV which i can load up on the startup screen

Here's my way, it only took 10 minutes to set up, I just tested it and it works fine, it's the default FSX scenery-

Start any flight anywhere, Open the map and type in the coordinates, Altiude and Heading as shown for Yosemite, and click OK-

Bingo, you should find yourself sitting in a field in Yosemite Nat Park, it's over 4000 feet high, hence the clouds-

Tip- a headwind will greatly assist takeoff in the thin air, so go to World> Weather> Customize and set medium wind, and drag the wind direction on the dial to approx 163, and click ok>ok.

SAVE it NOW into your Saved Flights list so you can come straight to it in future-

Piece o' cake, I gave the Cessna a touch of flaps to boost lift. That's Half Dome in the far background on the right-

For my next trick I placed a Cub on the road at the foot of Half Dome, here are the co-ordinates, altitude and heading. I set headwind from 53 degrees-

Ready for takeoff-

And away we go, it's a challenge taking off in low-powered planes like this because the road is around 4000 feet high and the machine has to be gently nursed to climb without stalling in the rarified air-

Good job Mick. Now you guys have me flying around Half Dome, which is a surprise, as I live in California, and never have visited Yo-sem-ite (in Sim or in person). Snow anyone?
