Prepar3D settings

Hello.

Can you please give me an advise what settings to use?

My config is: Core i7 2600k (5.0 Ghz)

Asus 980 Strix Edition

8GB Ram 2133

I used settings from here: http://www.robainscough.com/Prepar3D_Settings_2.html

I had a flight between two german airports with Aerosoft scenery on Aerosoft a319, witch FTX Global, Vector, LC Europe and Active sky Next.

What i get from pilots view: near gate 22-25 fps, take off 15-23 fps, in flight 19-40, decent 14-28, landing 13-19

The game is not smooth, having a minor lags even on FL310.

I tested my system in 3DMark and result is good, so it seems the probelm is not in PC.

Can someone please share with me settings, that work fine in Prepar3d but keeps the image cool?

Thank you in advance.

Your system is powerful BUT the settings that Rob uses might be a bit too high. With the add-ons you have and high settings, you are pushing it. A place to start - if you are using 2560 resolution, try lowering it to 1920 and see if that improves. With P3D it's more about getting smooth results than frames. Remember, the normal setting in P3D is generally equivalent to the high setting in FSX.

Vic offers great advice, as far as rolling back from 2560 resolution to 1920.

I did that in FSX a while back (with different numbers), and it improved my fps', it definitely helped.

But doing this rollback in P3D will be much more noticeable than in FSX, being (as vic says) the smoothness should be much more apparent.

If the P3D resolution rollback doesn't help, then go back to what you had it at before...or experiment with your own resolution numbers...you aren't going to mess anything up by doing so.

Something else you might want to keep in mind: yes, your system is comparable in a very good way with Rob's.

On the other hand, he's also running the Titan video card, which in itself is a very nice addon, on any system -either in P3D or FSX.

The numbers you post now are from the virtual cockpit view, right? VC will always be slower fps-wise.

Another thing to consider: You're showing out these numbers in P3D with a fps hog to begin with, that being the Aerosoft A319.

The Aerosoft heavies are nice -I own them too- but imo the only major drawback with anything by AS? All their vc's are fps hogs.

That said, try a test flight in P3D with a default FSX heavy -say the A321, or the the Boeing 737-800.

Try that, and then see what your fps numbers are...they might improve. It can't hurt to try.

My 2 cent's worth, and my system's not even close to what you or Vic run.

Even at 20 fps' my P3D looks great and runs awesome. As Vic said earlier, it's all about the smoothness in P3D, and not fps checking, like we did/do now in FSX.

In any regard, good luck to you in whatever you come up with.

Just like FSX, set your desktop resolution to the monitor's "recommended" setting.

Then set P3D resolution to the same. No up/down conversions to slow the response.

In all but a very few minor categories the GTX 980 is superior to the Titan, so, graphically, Rob's settings should be fine. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1351?vs=1060

For the most efficiency, scale your frame rate to a fourth, or half, of your monitor's refresh rate. 60Hz/120Hz = 30 or 60fps. If you are using a 4K monitor @ 30Hz, then set 30fps.

There is no reason to set an FPS limit higher than the monitor can render. Waste of power.

Thank you, I am so grateful that you are trying to help me!

vgbaron, i will try, but the resolution of my monitor is 2560x1440, wont 1920 look "blurry"? But anyway, thank you very much, i will try!

stvn, i began testing with Aerosoft, because i used to fly with them a lot in FSX on my old PC, but without ORBX and airport addons, and i am planning to fly with them and PMDG only. Thank you for information that Aerosoft VC takes a lot of FPS, i will keep it in mind. My aim is to have settings, that will allow my PC to handle it.

fxsttcb, i dont quite understand what "recommended" settings is? I see only native resolution which is 2550x1440.. Thank you for your advise, will try that, before i had Unlimited frame rate.

But still can you PM me or post here your settings in-game and Nvidia Inspector ones?

Should i add smt to .cfg file?

Because, i havent add AffinityMask setting from Rob's config, because i dont really understand what does it mean. Its connected with CPUs cores, but he have 6 cores. Plus i have read advises to set much lower numbers, than 4100, so i dont understand.

Win 7: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display\Screen Resolution

The dropdown next to "Resolution" should have a (recommended) setting.

That is usually the native resolution of the monitor...Don

One thing you can try which might make it easier - rername or delete the prepar3d.cfg file and let P3D rebuild it. Since you have Rob's settings - start by JUST changing ONE item. Also remember to delete the shaders folder (C:\users\\Appdata\Local\LockheedMartin\Prepar3d v2\Shaders).

Then fly for a bit - then repeat with another setting. See if you can find the setting on YOUR system that gives you trouble.

Leave the FPS setting at LM's default for now. Get the visuals you want first and then decide if you NEED better FPS.

I generally set mine at 20 and forget about it - if it's smooth, the FPS make no difference.

Let P3D pick the affinity setting - it's set to use all cores which is generally best.

Yes, in my case native=recommended.

Thank you, Vic, will try.

By the way, how do you think will FSX run better on my system with the same addons? I ask because I don't have it installed, so I'm deciding if it's worth the time, that will be spent.

Oleg - I think FSX would run better BUT not look as good. By better, I mean you might get better FPS but it wouldn't compare visually to P3D.

These are the settings that I use. Remember, each system is different but use them as a starting point and adjust as necessary.

  • 4 weeks later...
well, a quick question here, do we need to add highmemfix to the cfg file or is this not needed?

No longer needed. Initially you should have NO tweaks in the P3D.cfg file. Get stable operation first then there are only two that have any meaning - TBM and FFTF.
