  1. Seasons Greetings To All! Just this week, I noted Windows Defender is not working on the Mrs PC. We have identical PCs although there are subtle differences due to upgrades, etc. Both are Windows 10 and the PCs are almost 7 years old. Within the last few months we installed Spybot 9.2 on both PCs after becoming disenchanted with another malware program. My PC has been doing fine so figured both were OK. Now learned Windows Defender has been "Inoperative" on hers. This is a Defender matter discussed on the web and Spybot addressed it as well. It is not a Spybot problem but one in which Defender turns off when it recognizes other similar programs installed? In previous years, We have run Spybot joined with Microsoft Anti-Virus on PCs for some time and never had any issues we were aware of. So, Spybot was uninstalled and reinstalled on hers. Directions to uncheck and stop the items in Spybot's "System Services" were followed. See Pic. We tried installing Spybot on another unrelated Win 10 Machine and the same thing occurs with Defender being inoperative. It has always been my impression Spybot (Free ED) was only a Malware; PUPS program. Are they now Incompatible? Baffled! JR
  2. Thanks to all here and Longbreak. I just now saw all the replies. Trust me, I did all the tasks mentioned and no luck. I also had an internet problem for 24 hours but got it resolved.
  3. Thanks, performed as instructed. No luck on the scannow approach. I also tried a method suggested in Youtube. No luck there either. There is a means of restoring something via "Legacy Hardware" but no change. R
  4. Hello, For awhile now, I have noticed a problem with a USB port on the front of my tower case. There are 3 ports and one is a 3.0 (Blue). The other 2 are the typical USB "A" I think. They have the Black appearance. After looking into this, I checked my Device Manager and determined one "A" has vanished and this is the one affected!! See Screenshot. My Mrs. has the same identical PC (With Windows 10) and her Device Manager lists the 3. After all the headaches I have incurred with Microsoft Updates, I am ready to blame them, but cannot really be sure. I have an MSI Motherboard but presume this is a Software Issue since Device Manager lacks the entry. Internet searches aim in the direction of reloading the driver, etc.. but how? There is no item to install it to? I do not know where to go on this one... The port does function as a charger for my phone which proves it still has power to it, but it does not respond to any accessory plugged into it (Data transfer dead). I opened the case and checked connections for this to the motherboard. No Change. Anyone know how to deal with this? Thanks... R
  5. Thanks Downwind. I am familiar with IFR plates but never used them. Not IFR rated and there is really too much info on there. I am as sharp as a donut (Taken from this video of JFK controller Kennedy Steve) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTYRqgEPdoM. It must be the aircraft but it was fine up to now, an add on. Next I will try the stock FSX 747 but I believe it has happened with that as well. One question, I wonder if FSX randomly shuts down the ILS to make your day. This I thought could be likely.
  6. OK, Thanks all, I think first I will check my approach being sure to be below the glide slope. The rest I have always arranged panel wise but certainly will recheck them.
  7. Hello All, I have not been as loyal to FSX lately, but maybe part relates to my frustration about ILS landings. Not something earth shattering (Maybe I should say plane shattering!) with respect to topics here, but here goes... Does not matter what jet I pick. Seems even though I use a careful controlled approach, sometimes despite having hit the "APP" button, the aircraft will decide not to descent and continues to the runway in that manner. I have to click off the AP and wing it, but today, the aircraft developed a wander attitude and goes adrift despite "Manual control" on aerilons and rudder. A real mind of its own. If there something I am missing? This problem started a year+ ago but is not always for certain, but very annoying. If you kill the AP button, this should also shut down the APP, right? The aircraft today was the stock 747. Initially, the ac will make the turn to line up with the runway at the OM but, as I said, it will maintain its altitude and it takes me a minute to realize it. I have been doing the ILS landings for years on FSX and do not recall any issues unless I caused them to happen. Redd
  8. If this is any worthwhile contribution, I have never had much luck with recent editions of Windows when it comes to their System Restore. 2 years ago, I believe a Windows Update really did a number on my Windows 10 and I ended up taking the PC to an expert for help. I was not pleased with the outcome. As far as using System Restore, it will usually go through the motions and then after 20 minutes, the screen will announce "Could not restore to an earlier time..." So, I just added a spare Hard Drive to the machine and back up what I need. The PC came with a Windows 10 Disk. The problem I have had with using this down the road, as Windows usually disables them because of previous Updates. So you go up "S*** Creek without a paddle on this stuff in my experience." I gave up with both System Restore and the Disks. I have not been able to make a back up disk either and at this point--care less. I did go ahead and update System Restore from seeing this thread (PIC) but I doubt it will work if necessary (Per above). Redd
  9. Thanks to all for the input on this Windows 10 matter and sub-topic printers. It just seems you have to take the "Bad" with the good when it comes to Microsoft updates (IMO). The security end of it alone is cause for concern down the road. I am sure the scammers and hackers are 1 step behind Microsoft's path. As far as drivers are concerned, it would be nice if some "Caveats" were offered to users when equipment/softrware may become involved. If there is one thing I have seen repeated in Flightsim and elsewhere in general: Trouble with a program or PC seems to start when the manufacturer makes changes...and the problem has nothing to do with the integrity of the program or PC. I'm sure the pilots who complained about the Boeing "Max 8" figure they could be part of Ernest Gann's novel "Fate is The Hunter." A good book about 1930-40s pilots sometimes surviving merely by fate not having sought them out. Redd
  10. Yes, fun fun fun with printers. The wife had complained years ago about printer ink as she was the "Buyer" for these at a local place. To cut down the cost, she thought a refilled cartridge would be good. Then was told "Refills" for our MP190 /210 will not work because with the Canons we have will not function with a "Refill." Canon put a "Non-Op" software code on the cartridge should you try to reuse it they told her. Later on, the shop then explained they could refill them... Apparently, they were able to counter the code. Next, the shop did not refill the cartridges enough to make it worthwhile. They ran out quickly. Then along comes the power of the net and a website wherein you can buy your own refill kit (Needles-ink bottles...). Then I learn all the shortcomings doing so. In the beginning I thought it was easier to just pry the top off the cartridges and directly fill them from the bottle. Very easy--too easy!!! You cannot fill these too much and then by breaking them open it causes adverse conditions for operation. Then Canon began making the refill process impossible. The cartridges would not work unless they were Canons and then those had to be new. Presently, I cannot get the refills to work. One printer seemed immune to changes for awhile because it was older. At the moment, I have new Canon cartridges in both and everything is bliss...until I try this refill stuff again. And as I said above, now Windows 10 gets into the act with the drivers. Just since I wrote the message above, Windows has installed 2 updates on my PC. I did go ahead and change the Driver update, but my PC does things regardless of my settings, and so, I did read that Windows 10 is truly now the age of "Big Brother." And yes, printers were relatively inexpensive because the manufacturers make all the money on the ink cartridges--it has been so said many times on the net. It's just so weird that I have been using Windows 10 since 2016 and there was never any issues with the printer original drivers up until July. Redd
  11. CRJ... Thanks...there is no doubt in my mind that Microsoft and Canon have effectively rendered my MP210 and MP190 dead UNLESS (In the case of Canon) I use new Canon cartridges. The driver matter was a case of overcoming a Windows 10 update. For those who could benefit, this is the eye tiring story. A couple of years ago, I began refilling cartridges after learning of such on the web. Initially, it worked but later I had to overcame a couple of querks. Then, a year ago, both printers became outright spastic(!) and we decided to buy a Canon 4010 when I figured the print mechanisms had failed. I disconnected the old ones and left them in a room to collect dust. The 4010 allows us to use 1 printer for 2 PCs. I pondered discarding the old printers but did not do so because I felt there was something about all of it which was not right since BOTH failed at about the same time (Like the Boeing MAX story)! Then one day I decided to power up one of them. The printer program was still undisturbed inside the PC then. The printer I tried printed like nothing ever happened to it= perfect. Then I knew... Now, it seems whatever I do, I cannot overcome the refilled cartridge matter--despite exploring every answer seen on Youtube and beyond. Now I am tempted to try and refill them in place but this would require some machine alterations to reach the top area of the cartridges. Plus, apparently Canon uses a "Count" procedure in determining the life of a cartridge. This meaning you can only print so many pages with a cartridge and then it is deemed nearly empty, forcing replacement. Redd
  12. Brian, Thanks for the comment. My printer problem is the first time I recognized an update from Windows may not always be productive. My comment above was a "FYI" with respect to Andy's introduction of this thread. As far as the Ink Cartridge matter, it took a while for me to realize it was external forces at work which disabled my printers. The printers at first began printing erratically and I assumed it was just a cartridge fault. Not so.... Redd
  13. I have been using 2 old Canon Printers. Both have had issues related to ink cartridge usage. With respect to Windows 10, an update was just completed by Microsoft end of July on my PC. Thereafter, neither printer would work at all. I find out Windows 10 will not support these printers with the existing drivers. So, luckily, I found the drivers online but had to choose a Windows 7 driver which works. As for the Ink cartridge issue, it has been an ongoing battle to get the printers to operate with refilled cartridges. Just recently it appears neither will now accept any cartridge except for a new Canon Cartridge. So the battle may be lost anyway as buying new cartridges is a joke as far as price is concerned. Redd
  14. I have always thought the airlines monitor their flights (Dispatch). In this case meaning the crew would get a call from ground sometime after leaving the intended route. Surely, someone on the ground must have known something? These days, I cannot imagine an airline not monitoring their scheduled flights?? Sounds like personnel other than the crew on board were dozing.
